Primetime 585 Shining Star: Marley Siembor
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — For our Primetime 585 Shining Star spotlight, we're highlighting Marley Siembor! Marley is a junior at Eastridge High School. She excels on the volleyball court and softball field. For volleyball, she has been the starting setter for the last two years and was chosen as the team MVP. In softball, she has been the teams starting first basemen and won the 'Most Improved Award' for Eastridge last season. Thursday night, she helped her team, who was down in the 6th inning, beat Mercy! Marley is looking into studying early childhood development at colleges such as Canisius, St. John Fisher and Syracuse. Fallen marine from Rochester will be honored by NASCAR driver
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — A fallen Marine from Rochester will be honored at NASCAR's 600 Miles of Remembrance this Memorial Day weekend. Corporal Reynold Armand was a graduate of Eastridge High School before he followed in his father's footsteps and joined the US Marines. Armand passed away on August 2, 2007, in Operation Iraqi Freedom. He was 21 years old. Professional driver Daniel Suarez announced Wednesday that he will honor Armand during NASCAR's Military Appreciation Weekend. His name will be featured on the windshield of the Freeway #99 car. Miriam Velez is the Gold Star Mother of Cpl. Armand and a co-founder of the local organization Latino Military Coalition. She shared her thoughts on Suarez honoring her son. 'I sincerely appreciate Freeway for sharing my son's story and keeping his memory alive,' Velez wrote in a statement. Strike Out ALS raises money in support of local athletic director, families for second year
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The second annual Strikeout ALS fundraising event was held at Eastridge High School and Honeoye Falls-Lima High School on Saturday. The fundraiser is held to support and bring awareness to individuals and families impacted by Lou Gehrig's disease diagnoses. Fairville firefighter who died on duty to be honored in national memorial LaPietra served as the athletic director of Joseph C. Wilson Magnet High School Commencement Academy for years, contributing to the lives of athletes and faculty he worked with. While he has been able to continue working in a role as athletic director for modified sports, ALS has limited his physical ability and has placed him in a wheelchair. It began last year, organized in support of Rochester City School District athletic director Joe LaPietra, who had been diagnosed with ALS. Fellow directors and community members hope to raise over $1,000 to contribute to the cause and help other Western and Central New York families, such as LaPiera's, receive the resources and financial help necessary during a difficult time. The event, curated by athletic trainers from across the Rochester area, featured 10 games of softball and baseball between both sites. Participating teams included East High School, Edison Career and Technology High School, Padilla High School at the Franklin Campus, School of the Arts, and LaPiera's Joseph C.
