Primary 2025: Voters decide races among primary challenges in Adams County
On Tuesday, residents in Adams County took to the polls to decide who they would see on the ballot in the November election. Many of the races were contested only within each party, resulting in victories that all but ensured the winner will run unopposed on the ballot in the general election later this year. With all precincts reporting, unofficial results were reported for the races around 10:11 p.m. on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. All results are unofficial until certified by the county. Pennsylvania State Rep. Torren Ecker (R-District 193) defeated Paul Royer in the Republican primary for the Adams County Court of Common Pleas. Ecker has served in the Pennsylvania house since his election in 2019, after winning a hotly contested Republican primary for the seat by just one vote. On Tuesday night, with all precincts reporting, Ecker defeated Royer on the Republican ballots with a wide margin of 5,376 to Royer's 3,523, according to the unofficial election results. Royer, however, was the only of pair to appear on the Democratic ballots, which Royer obtained 4,154 votes on, and will return to face Ecker in November. John Wega, a lieutenant with the county sheriff's office, faced Tyrone Township constable Josh Fitting in an election that saw vigorous campaigning in recent months. Ultimately, constable Josh Fitting secured a strong lead, winning in the unofficial results by over 1,000 votes. Fitting won with 4,100 votes, while Wega totaled 3,097. No Democratic candidates had been listed on the primary ballots, clearing a likely path to victory for Fitting in November. In Gettysburg, councilman Chad-Alan Carr managed to pull off a successful primary challenge against incumbent mayor Rita Frealing, all but ensuring his election in November. Carr obtained his victory over the incumbent mayor with 308 votes to Frealing's 266. Frealing was elected as Gettysburg's mayor in 2022, becoming the first African American woman to serve in the role. Among the main platforms of Carr's campaign was advocating to delegate additional responsibilities for overseeing the borough's police department to the borough council, treating it like other municipal departments. In Littlestown, eight candidates campaigned ahead of the primary to make their case to be on the November ballot. On the Republican ballot for the four-year school director term, the top four totals went to Steven Yerger, with 720 votes, Janell Ressler with 617 votes, Alberta Ally Maccall with 577 votes, and Donna Baylis with 520 votes. On the Democratic ballot for the four-year term, Rachel Hutchison received 337 votes, Brian Lawyer received 334 votes, Carl Thompson received 275 votes, and Janell Ressler received 232 votes. Jeanne Ewen was the sole candidate on either ballot for the two-year school director term, nabbing that nomination with 919 votes on the Republican ballot and 394 on the Democratic ballot. Seven candidates were cross-filed, while just one, Donna Baylis, ran solely on the Republican ballot. With Baylis landing in the top four spots on the Republican ballot, all eight candidates will once again face each other in the November election. Much like in Littlestown, all eight candidates in the campaign for four seats on the Gettysburg school board will also be facing each other again in November. Only one candidate, Michelle Smyers, ran solely on the Republican ballot, while two candidates, Charles Weise and Dale Brennan ran solely as Democrats, and five candidates were cross-filed in the race. On the Democratic ballot, Kathleen Pratt scored the highest total with 1,461 votes, followed by Julieta Booz with 1,129 votes, Charles Weise with 986 votes, and Dale Brennan with 928 votes. On the Republican ballot, David Sites nabbed 1,666 votes, Justine Sieg had 1,423 votes, Donna Harrison had 1,178 votes, and Michelle Smyers had 1,014 votes. With Smyers, Weise, and Brennan all finding a spot on the ballots, all eight candidates will return to the polls in November. The Upper Adams School Board saw seven candidates that campaigned towards four seats that were up for grabs. Those four seats are currently held by Susan Crouse, Kay Hollabaugh, Jim Lady and Gerald Walmer. Only Hollabaugh was on the ballot in the primary. Two candidates, Matthew Lustig and Melissa Anders, appeared solely on the Republican ballots, while five candidates, Deb Steckler, Rachel Elliott, John Lindemulder, Eric Markle and incumbent Kay Hollabaugh, were cross-filed in the race, Incumbent Kay Hollabaugh won the highest totals on both the Republican and Democratic ballots. With only seven candidates in the race, all seven will face off again in November. In Republican ballots, Hollabaugh received 753 votes, followed by Melissa Anders at 589 votes, Matthew Lustig at 577 votes, and John Lindemulder at 448 votes. As for the Democratic ballots, Hollabaugh scored 328 votes, followed by Rachel Elliott at 273 votes, Deb Steckler at 258 votes, and Eric Markle narrowly behind Streckler at 257 votes. While divided into three regions, the primary for Bermudian Springs school board only narrowed down one of the three races. In the first region, Mary Kemper defeated Mary Carder on the Republican ballot, while Carder was unopposed on the Democratic ballot. In the second region, with both candidates running solely as republicans, Dianna Canapp, with 178 votes, narrowly beat out Chad Klinedinst, with 148 votes. In the third region, Jennifer Goldhahn ran unopposed. In McSherrystown Borough, incumbent Mayor Catherine Hagerman received 96 votes, defeating challenger Michael Calderone, who had 60 votes. No candidates ran for the mayorship on the Democratic ballot. In Hamilton Township, which had seen significant public engagement in recent months over the issue of proposals for large warehouses, newcomer Ryan Fox unseated township president Ronald Weidner. Fox, who had organized opposition to mega-warehouses near Cross Keys, more than doubled Weidner's vote count, with Fox obtaining 228 votes to Weidner's 102 votes. Previously reported: Huge Cross Keys warehouse proposal denied by Hamilton Township Zoning Hearing Board With no Democratic candidates on the ballot, Fox is all but ensured to win the seat in November. Straban Township saw three candidates running for one spot on the November Republican ballot. Alan Zepp, who received 237 votes, secured his place on the general election ballot, beating out Britney Shelton with 103 votes and Merrill Thomas with 82 votes. On the Democratic ballots, Ed Deitsch was unopposed, obtaining 438 votes. In Mt. Joy Township, three candidates faced off in the Republican primary. Michael Gearhart, who obtained 246 votes, secured his place on the November ballot, defeating David Williams with 168 votes, and Thomas Dunchack II with 20 votes. Mt. Pleasant Township was divided into two races, with contested primaries for both a six-year supervisor spot and a two-year supervisor spot. For the six-year position, Richard Baugher, who had 165 votes, defeated Russell Lawrence, who had 115 votes. The shorter position of two-years was secured by Michael Riser, with 176 votes, defeating Michael Lind, who had 122 votes. No candidates were listed on the Democratic ballot for either race. In Union Township, only the six-year supervisor position was contested in the Republican primary. That race, as of Tuesday night, saw Jeff Trish as the reported winner in the unofficial results, winning by just one vote with 133 votes to Bill Arnold's 132 votes. On the two-year supervisor ballot, Enid Morhaleck ran unopposed, obtaining 241 votes. In the race for Abbottstown Borough council, three candidates on the Republican primary ballot were narrowed down to two. Travis Johnson took the first spot, with 67 votes, while April Obrien came in second with 39 votes, knocking Laura Baker out of the running. In Carroll Valley Borough, the Republican primary knocked one of four candidates out of the race for three spots. Mike Kulkusky earned the most votes at 192, while David Lillard earned 176 votes, and Richard Mathews had 160 votes, knocking Catherine Schubring, who had 69 votes, off of the November ballot. In the tiny borough of York Springs, five republican candidates faced off for three spots on the November ballot. On the Republican ballots, Lorenzo Devita came first with 35 votes, Michael Donnelly came second with 31 votes, and Michael Tipler came third with 21 votes. Pamela Monnier and Emily Kaiser, who had 17 and 7 votes, respectively, were knocked out of the running for council. Along with the council race, the mayorship in York Springs also saw a contested Republican primary. Incumbent Nina Tipler obtained 25 votes, defeating Pamela Monnier, who also ran for council. Two candidates faced off for mayor in Arendtsville Borough in the primary. April Jones, who received 75 votes, defeated incumbent mayor David Laughman, who received 34 votes. Texas Rangers fire offensive coordinator as team struggles to score runs
Oct 4, 2023; St. Petersburg, Florida, USA; Texas Rangers starting pitcher Max Scherzer (L) and bench coach/offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker (R) celebrate after defeating the Tampa Bay Rays in game two of the Wildcard series for the 2023 MLB playoffs at Tropicana Field. Mandatory Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports The Texas Rangers have fired offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker, the team announced on Sunday. Ecker was in his fourth season with the Rangers and had been a coach since the 2021 season, and was a member of the 2023 team that won their first World Series in franchise history. Advertisement The team's offense has struggled this season, ranking in the bottom 10 in hits (No. 26 ), runs scored (No. 29), and batting average (No. 26), and has only scored more than two runs twice in the last 10 games, including an 8-1 victory Sunday over the Seattle Mariners. In a statement, President of Baseball Operations Chris Young thanked Ecker for his time with the team but said it was time to make a change. 'After lengthy discussions and deliberations, we feel now is the appropriate time to provide our hitters with a new voice as we pursue goals of winning the division and reaching the postseason,' said Young. 'We are extremely grateful to Donnie for all that he has accomplished here with the Rangers, including his role in the club's 2023 World Series championship. We wish him the best.' The team is expected to address the structure of the club's hitting staff in the coming days.

Rangers fire offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker after 17-18 start to season, reportedly hire Bret Boone as replacement
Despite excellent pitching, the Rangers have lost 7 of their last 10 games with one of the worst collective batting averages in the league After a tough start to the season, the Texas Rangers are starting to make changes. The team announced Sunday it fired offensive coordinator Donnie Ecker after a sluggish start that has the Rangers 17-18 on the season. "After lengthy discussions and deliberations, we feel now is the appropriate time to provide our hitters with a new voice as we pursue goals of winning the division and reaching the postseason," Chris Young, the team's president of baseball operations, said in a statement. "We are extremely grateful to Donnie for all that he has accomplished here with the Rangers." The team announced Monday that they have hired former All-Star second baseman Bret Boone as Ecker's replacement. Boone will join the club on Tuesday, as the Rangers open a series against the Boston Red Sox. The move came after Texas beat the Seattle Mariners 8-1 at home on Sunday, avoiding a sweep against its AL West rival. But the past few weeks have seen a smattering of disappointing results for the Rangers, who also lost to the Mariners 13-1 and 2-1 and had three one-run losses in a row last week. After short stints with the Cincinnati Reds and San Francisco Giants, Ecker joined Texas' hitting staff in 2021, helping the team win the World Series in 2023. Texas' early-season problems have extended to its pitching efforts: The Rangers are tied for the sixth-best ERA in the league at 3.44 and have one of the lowest WHIPs at 1.17, as well. And yet the team has lost seven of its last 10. The issues with the Rangers are all about offense: Their .228 collective batting average is the sixth-lowest in baseball. Texas also has also racked up the second-fewest runs and RBI, beating out only the Colorado Rockies. At this point in the season, the Rangers are fourth in the AL West, four games back from the division-best Mariners and only sitting above the slightly hopeless Los Angeles Angels. Clearly Texas' front office is seeing the same problem and is hoping a coaching change will reinvigorate the Rangers' offense — before it's too late.
