Kennebunk voters toss Pay-As-You-Throw system
Jun. 11—Kennebunk voters decided Tuesday to get rid of Pay As You Throw, the system that requires residents to purchase town-specific trash bags to dispose of waste.
The vote was 1,408 in favor and 1,078 against.
In March, the Kennebunk Select Board approved a contract extension with Casella Waste Systems, allowing the company to continue curbside collections for the town.
The contract is an extension of an original 10-year contract with Casella, and locks Kennebunk into another five years of curbside waste collection and delivery to Ecomaine.
Voters approved a 30-year trash and recycling contract with Ecomaine in February, transferring the town's waste services from Casella to Ecomaine.
Recycling and waste contracts for the town had a large impact on the municipal budget for fiscal year 2026.
With the decision by Kennebunk voters to remove the pay-as-you-throw program, the net budget increases by $669,527.
