'Gun for hire' hitman theory emerges after double gangland shooting in Spain

Early reports suggested the killer was Scottish, however a source with detailed experience of dealing with major underworld incidents like this believes that it is almost certainly not the case. Claims a hitman flew from Scotland to murder two gangsters in a Spanish bar have been described as "highly doubtful" by one expert. Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jr were gunned down in Fuengirola on Satuday night. Early reports suggested the killer was Scottish, however a source with detailed experience of dealing with major underworld incidents like this believes that it is almost certainly not the case. ‌ Speaking to the Scottish Daily Express, the insider revealed: 'The logistics of organising someone to fly down to Spain, carry out the hit and then make good their escape are extremely complicated. ‌ 'You need a middle man in Spain to supply the weapons as you would not risk bringing it out yourself. You need someone with local knowledge to arrange a route to the scene of the attack and obviously, an escape plan. On top of that you need to get that individual out of the country undetected.' He added: 'All-in-all, it makes the Scottish hypothesis highly doubtful to me. Why go to all that trouble when there are people already in Spain who are willing to do your dirty work for you - for a price, of course! 'The Costas are full of Moroccans and Albanians who are simply ' guns -for-hire'. It is much more feasible that this what happened here on Saturday. Life is cheap for these kids and as well as getting paid, it gives them a lift up the criminal ladder by gaining kudos.' Major crime bosses like the Dublin-formed Kinahans, who've moved to Spain, usually use people they know and trust on the ground, due to so many of them actually relocating to Spain and their subsequent familiarity with the region, the source added. ‌ The insider added: 'The fact whoever did this was in-and-out of the bar in 25 seconds and that indicates a high degree of professionalism. 'Added to this, the tight clustering of the wounds to Monaghan's chest that would also tell me that this individual had done this before and had been trained. Possibly ex-military. It was a classic 'gangland execution' and not some random nobody given instructions and a gun for the first time, that's for sure''

Scot cops insist ‘no intelligence' to link Spanish gang shooting to Scots turf war

SCOTTISH cops have said there is nothing to suggest the double assassination of two gangsters in a Spanish bar is linked to the gang war raging across Scotland. Eddie Lyons Jr and Ross Monaghan were shot to death by a masked assassin in Monaghan's bar in Fuengirola on the Costa Del Sol. Advertisement There were fears the killings were an escalation in the underworld feud raging across Scotland. But cops have since revealed they believe it is not related. A Police Scotland spokesperson said: "The investigation into the fatal shootings in Fuengirola is being carried out by Spanish police. "Police Scotland is supporting Spanish police where requested, however at this time we have no officers deployed within Spain. Advertisement "There is currently no intelligence to suggest the deaths of these two men in Spain are linked to the recent criminal attacks in Scotland being investigated as part of Operation Portaledge. "Any misinformation or speculation linking the events in Spain are not helpful to the ongoing investigations in either country. "There is also nothing to suggest that the shooting in Fuengirola was planned from within Scotland." More to follow... Two men linked to Glasgow crime gang ‘shot dead by hooded man outside Spanish bar'

Two men previously linked to a Glasgow crime gang have been shot dead outside a Spanish bar, according to reports. Eddie Lyons Jr and Ross Monaghan were named by BBC Scotland as the two men who died after a masked gunman opened fire at Monaghans Bar in Fuengirola, Andalucia, on Saturday. Mr Monaghan was acquitted of the high-profile gangland murder of Glasgow's most feared criminal Kevin 'Gerbil' Carroll in 2012 - after Carroll was shot dead in an Asda car park in 2010 during a feud between the Lyons and Daniel crime families. He was accused of Carroll's murder and of disposing of evidence but was acquitted due to lack of evidence. Mr Lyons Jr was shot and wounded in an attack in 2006, believed to have been carried out by Carroll. Spanish police said their deaths pointed to a 'settling of scores' related to drug trafficking, according to Spanish newspaper Malaga Hoy. Residents said it sounded like 'rockets were going off' and 'everyone in the bar came running out' after they saw a man shooting a gun. 'I just remember seeing the gun. I was in shock and I didn't know how to react. It was a very strange episode,' a resident told the newspaper. Another added: 'We heard more gunshots and everyone came running towards us. Families and children started coming in, and we ducked for anything.' Spanish police said a hooded man got out of a vehicle and opened fire on two people before fleeing, Malaga Hoy reported. Monaghans Irish bar is a popular pub on the Spanish seafront and is often visited by British tourists and expats. It was full with football fans watching the Champions League final on Saturday, witnesses said. The Foreign Office said it had not been approached for any consular assistance but that its staff stood ready to assist any British nationals if required. The Independent contacted Spanish Policia Nacional for comment.

Chilling CCTV shows gangland gunman storm Spanish bar before killing Ross Monaghan and Eddie Lyons Jnr

The graphic footage, broadcast on Spanish TV today, showed the gunman dressed in black fire at Monaghan at point blank range. Horror CCTV footage shows the moment Ross Monaghan's killer chases him round his Costa del Sol pub and shoots him dead after executing pal Eddie Lyons Jnr seconds earlier. The chilling clip taken from inside Monaghan's bar in Spain shows a gunman dressed in black walk inside the boozer and shoot Monaghan, 43, at point black range on Saturday night after the Champions League final. ‌ ‌ The Glasgow hood is seen dropping to the floor in the video as the gunman shoots a number of times. As Monaghan crawls across the floor, he appears to turn round and look into his killer's eyes. He is later seen sitting upright against a wall covered in blood. Two innocent bystanders thought to include a waitress and another man in black, can be seen running for their lives in the footage, which was broadcast on Spanish TV today. The assassin appeared to be wearing a black baseball cap, a black jacket and black shorts and a white T-shirt round his neck he is thought to have used to hide his face before striking. He is reported to have got out of a car to carry out the hit before fleeing in the same vehicle driven by an accomplice. Local reports today said Monaghan got the chance to try to escape after Eddie Lyons Jr was blasted outside the bar because the gunman's weapon jammed. ‌ The double shooting unfolded in front of horrified ex pats and holidaymakers in the Costa Del Sol. Harrowing images from the scene showed Eddie Lyons Jr lying lifeless on his back in shorts and a T-shirt by a drinks and meal blackboard on an outside terrace at the Irish bar. A video later emerged showing a passerby desperately tried to save the slain gangster as he lay on the pavement. ‌ The woman was seen giving him CPR but failed to revive him. Police and paramedics were later seen surrounding the body of one of the victims after he was covered under a blanket as shocked locals and holidaymakers looked on. The Record understands the shootings are linked to Scotland's ongoing gangland war. ‌ No arrests have been made. Spanish police said: 'The investigation is continuing into the fatal shooting of two men at a pub in Fuengirola, with nothing new at the moment.' ‌ Officers from an elite Spanish National Police Costa del Sol-based Anti-Drug and Organised Crime Unit UDYCO are heading up the ongoing probe. Court officials are expected to confirm later today a secrecy order has been placed on the investigation, preventing public officials from making any detailed public comment. ‌ Monaghan, who fled Scotland in 2017, to head for the Costa Del Sol is listed as the proprietor of the bar in an online business directory. The gangland figure touched town in Malaga in January 2017, after he was shot twice in a gun attack outside a primary school in Glasgow. Monaghan was reportedly shot twice by a gunman lurking outside St George's Primary, Penilee. The Record understands the horror gun killings are linked to a violent gang war that has been raging in Scotland since March. ‌ The feud first erupted following a fallout between rival gangsters after a £500k stash of cocaine was reportedly swiped from under the nose of Dubai-based Mr Big, Ross McGill. The drugs were reportedly taken by caged Edinburgh kingpin Mark Richardson's foot soldiers sparking a series of violent attacks on homes and businesses. Mr Big, who was later revealed as former Union Bears capo McGill waged war on Richardson and his associates, including the Daniels crime clan in Glasgow. ‌ Mr Big's enforcers, a faceless and frightening group going by the name of Tamo Junto (TMJ), have carried out a series of fire bombings and other vicious attacks on homes, businesses and cars associated with Richardson. We reported earlier this week that a well-placed source said the Dubai-based Mr Big behind attacks on Daniel targets, Ross McGill, had agreed to end hostilities after being leaned on by cartel bosses in Dubai. However gangland enforces Tamo Junto (TMJ) quickly quashed any talk of peace as they vowed to continue to carry out the turf war. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community!
