Chicago's bloody Memorial Day weekend leaves 22 shot, 2 dead: report
Chicago was plagued by violence over Memorial Day weekend when 22 people were shot, including two fatally, ABC7 reported. One fatal shooting reportedly occurred when an argument erupted inside a vehicle on the city's Northwest Side in the Logan Square neighborhood on Saturday afternoon. The 35-year-old victim was attempting to exit the vehicle when he was shot and killed by someone else inside the vehicle. The shooter then fled the scene and remains at large. A 46-year-old man on the Northwest Side was shot in the head while inside his vehicle near Humboldt Park. The vehicle then crashed into another car and a pole. The victim was transported to the hospital and later pronounced dead. The suspect in that shooting also remains at large. On the city's South Side, two people were sitting inside their home when they were shot. The assailant in that incident also fled the scene and remains at large. The same outlet reported that 573 people were killed in Chicago in 2024. Last week, two Venezuelans living illegally in Chicago were arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement in connection with a deadly mass shooting. Ricardo Granadillo Padilla, 25, and Edward Martinez Cermeno, 24, suspected members of the violent Tren de Aragua (TdA) street gang, were taken into custody by federal law enforcement for allegedly killing three and wounding five others after opening fire during a December house party. More than a dozen suspected TdA members were also arrested as part of the investigation into the shooting. Two illegal Venezuelan immigrants, suspected TdA gang members charged in deadly Chicago mass shooting
Two Venezuelans living in the U.S. illegally were recently charged in a December mass shooting that killed three people and wounded five others in Chicago, leading to the arrests of more than a dozen suspected Tren de Aragua gang members. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) announced on Tuesday that suspected shooters Ricardo Granadillo Padilla, 25, and Edward Martinez Cermeno, 24, are being charged in the Dec. 2 house party massacre. Eight people were shot, including five men and three women between the ages of 20 and 35, according to a report from affiliate FOX 32 Chicago. Victims suffered gunshot wounds to the head, abdomen and extremities, according to the report. Three men were pronounced dead, including a 26-year-old and a 28-year-old. Gang-related graffiti was found at the scene, and officials confirmed prior calls for service at the address, FOX 32 reported. Padilla was arrested in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Feb. 8 in a multi-agency effort, and was sentenced in March for illegally entering the country in 2022 near El Paso, Texas, according to ICE. Multiple guns, high-capacity magazines, narcotics and fraudulent documents were seized in January from his home in Chicago. During his arrest a month later, a pistol, ammunition and other evidence were seized, according to authorities. Cermeno was arrested in Schaumburg, Illinois on Jan. 26 by ICE Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) Chicago and border patrol agents, but officials said he was later released by a federal magistrate judge after a federal detention hearing. He was arrested again by ICE HSI Chicago on administrative immigration charges for illegally entering the country in 2023 near Eagle Pass, Texas. Padilla and Cermeno remain in federal custody, according to ICE. Within the last few weeks, 16 additional TdA members and associates of Padilla and Cermeno in the Chicago and Raleigh areas were arrested by ICE HSI Chicago on immigration charges. ICE did not immediately respond to further inquiries from Fox News Digital.

What we know Granadillo Padilla was arrested Feb. 8 in Raleigh, North Carolina, by a coalition of federal agencies, including ICE. He was previously convicted for illegally entering the U.S. in 2022 and remains in federal custody. Guns, narcotics, and fraudulent documents were seized during searches of his residences in both Chicago and North Carolina. Martinez Cermeno was arrested Jan. 26 in Schaumburg by ICE HSI Chicago and CBP agents. He was initially released by a magistrate judge but was re-detained by ICE on immigration charges for unlawful entry into the U.S. in 2023 near Eagle Pass, Texas. In addition to the two suspected shooters, ICE officials said they have arrested 16 other Tren de Aragua gang members and associates in the Chicago and Raleigh areas on immigration violations as the investigation continues. What's next The suspects have not yet been formally charged in connection with the shootings, but law enforcement agencies said criminal investigations are ongoing. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said they arrested two Venezuelan nationals with ties to the Tres de Aragua gang in connection with a Chicago mass shooting in December. Three people were killed and five more were injured in the shooting at birthday party at a home in the Chicago Lawn neighborhood on Dec. 2, 2024. Police were called to the scene in the 3500-block of West 59th Street around 2:10 pm., where they found four men and four women between the ages of 20 and 35 with gunshot wounds. Three of the four men were killed. They were identified as 28-year-old Jon Carlos Blancarcer, 26-year-old Hector Sajo, and 32-year-old Osmer Angel Ferrer Oria. Edward Martinez Cermeno, 24, was arrested on Jan. 26 in Schaumburg and initially released following a federal detention hearing, the agency said. He was then arrested again by ICE agents in Chicago on administrative charges for being in the U.S. illegally. He is in federal custody facing criminal charges for allegedly illegally entering the U.S. near Eagle Pass, Texas, in 2023. ICE said they arrested Ricardo Granadillo Padilla, 25, on Feb. 8 in Raleigh, North Carolina. ICE said in January they seized multiple guns, high-capacity magazines, narcotics and fraudulent documents from his Chicago residence, and when he was arrested in Raleigh they seized a pistol and ammunition. Padilla remains in federal custody and was sentenced in March for illegally entering the U.S. near El Paso in 2022.
