Thousands in London defend trans rights after court ruling

Thousands demonstrated in London on Saturday to defend the rights of transgender people. The rally comes after the United Kingdom's Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that the legal definition of a "woman" is someone who is biologically female at birth. The decision could have broad implications for single-sex services and spaces such as toilets, hospital wards, and prisons. At the rally in central London's Parliament Square, protesters waved LGBTQ+ rainbow flags and held signs and banners with slogans including "trans women are women!" and "trans rights are human rights". One of the demonstrators, Eevee Zayas from Spain who identifies as non-binary and transgender, told the AFP news agency that they fear "the extremists will feel empowered" by the court's decision and that "hate crimes against the trans community" would increase. LGBTQ+ charity Stonewall said Wednesday that the ruling was "incredibly worrying for the trans community." Amnesty International said that while the "judgment is clearly disappointing" and raises "potentially concerning consequences for trans people," the ruling "does not change the protection trans people are afforded under the protected characteristic of 'gender reassignment', as well as other provisions under the Equality Act." The UK's top court has said its ruling "does not remove protection from trans people," who are "protected from discrimination on the ground of gender reassignment." The case was brought by women's rights group For Women Scotland, who appealed a law passed by the Scottish Parliament which said the definition of a "woman" included individuals with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC). In its appeal to the Supreme Court, FWS had claimed the Scottish Parliament's ruling could impact sex-based rights and single-sex spaces across Scotland, England, and Wales. Trans rights supporters rally outside UK parliament after landmark ruling

Thousands of people on Saturday rallied in central London in support of trans rights, after a landmark court ruling on the definition of a "woman". Britain's Supreme Court on Wednesday ruled that the legal definition of a "woman" is based on a person's sex at birth, with potentially far-reaching consequences for how single-sex spaces and services are run. At a protest in Parliament Square, activists, protesters, trade unions and community groups waved flags and held up banners with slogans such as "trans women are women!" and "trans rights are human rights". "My main fear -- the extremists will feel empowered by this decision. Hate crimes against (the) trans community (will) go up," said Eevee Zayas, a 32-year-old researcher from Spain, describing themself as non binary transgender. The court ruling said that single-sex spaces and services including changing rooms, toilets and women-only hospital wards "will function properly only if sex is interpreted as biological sex". "Everything in the transition is going to be harder. Coming here in big numbers is very important to stand gainst the Supreme Court decision," added Joe Brown, a trans woman in the process of transitioning. Brown said other fears included not being able to access health care and children being scared to come out as trans. The court ruling followed a legal battle between the Scottish government and campaign group For Women Scotland (FWS) involving clashing interpretations of the Equality Act. While the Scottish government argued that the law gave trans women with a Gender Recognition Certificate (GRC) the same protections as a biological female, the campaign group disagreed. har/giv
