President El-Sisi, Spanish PM Discuss Strengthening Bilateral Ties and Urgent Regional Issues

El-Sisi, Spain's PM urge Gaza ceasefire, boost Egypt-Spain ties. Cairo - 28 MAY 2025 – President Abdel Fattah El Sisi received a phone call on Tuesday from Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, where both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the strategic partnership between Egypt and Spain, particularly in the fields of trade, investment, and economic cooperation. According to Presidential Spokesman Ambassador Ahmed Fahmy, the call reflected the momentum generated by President El Sisi's official visit to Madrid in February 2025. Both sides expressed their keenness to capitalize on this progress to open new avenues for collaboration that serve the interests of both nations and their people. The discussion also addressed regional developments, most notably the ongoing crisis in the Gaza Strip. President El Sisi and Prime Minister Sánchez voiced strong opposition to the continued Israeli military operations and any attempts to forcibly displace Palestinians. They stressed the urgent need for a comprehensive and immediate ceasefire, the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, and support for a two-state solution through wider recognition of the Palestinian state. Additionally, the two leaders exchanged views on the situations in Syria, Lebanon, and Libya. They underscored the importance of safeguarding the unity, territorial integrity, and stability of these countries, while emphasizing continued coordination between Egypt and Spain to support regional peace and security, given the pivotal roles both nations play in the Mediterranean and Middle East regions. The call reflects Egypt and Spain's shared vision for constructive diplomacy, sustainable development, and active engagement in resolving some of the region's most pressing challenges.

Egypt, Spain Reject US Plan to Displace Gazans

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez on Wednesday rejected a controversial proposal by US President Donald Trump to displace Palestinians from the war-devastated Gaza Strip. The Arab League is scheduled to hold an extraordinary meeting in Cairo on March 4 in response to Trump's plan to take over Gaza and permanently move its Palestinian inhabitants elsewhere, including to Egypt and Jordan, and then redevelop the coastal territory into the "Riviera of the Middle East". Speaking in Madrid ahead of the gathering, Sisi called for the "international community's support and adoption of a plan to rebuild the Gaza Strip without displacing the Palestinian people -- I repeat, without displacing the Palestinian people -- from their land, which they cling to, and their homeland, which they do not agree to relinquish". Sanchez, one of the staunchest defenders of the Palestinian cause within the European Union, agreed, saying "Gaza belongs to the Palestinians and is part of the future Palestinian state". "Their expulsion would not only be immoral and contrary to international law and United Nations resolutions, but would also have a destabilizing effect," the Socialist premier added. The two leaders also signed a declaration upgrading Egypt-Spain relations to a "strategic partnership", as well as several memorandums of understanding in various fields including illegal migration and defense. Trump's plan sparked an outcry from Arab governments as well as from world leaders, and the United Nations warned against "ethnic cleansing" in the Palestinian territory.

Cairo – February 9, 2025: Minister of Investment and Foreign Trade, Hassan El-Khatib, is scheduled to meet with senior Spanish officials, business leaders, and heads of business federations to discuss ways to boost trade and investment opportunities between the two nations during a visit to Madrid. Aimed at enhancing the economic relations between Egypt and Spain, the visit will focus on presenting Egypt's investment potential and the advantages of its market, while reviewing the country's economic policies. Key areas of discussion will include exploring avenues to increase bilateral trade and joint investments. The minister will highlight the Egyptian government's efforts to improve financial, monetary, and commercial policies, aimed at easing trade and facilitating foreign investment into Egypt. Throughout his visit, El-Khatib will engage with officials from Spanish companies operating in a wide range of sectors, including energy, hotels, hydrogen, ready-made garments, engineering, infrastructure, health, and aviation. Spanish company Typsa will lead the study, in partnership with Egypt's National Authority for Tunnels. This study, which is expected to be completed within eight months, will assess the 19-kilometer extension from New Marg to Shibin El Qanater, located to the north of Cairo. The project is part of Egypt's broader climate change initiative, the nexus of water, food, and energy program, which is aiming to raise over $14 billion for nine priority projects in water, food, energy, and sustainable transportation.
