Sisi, Burhan Discuss Nile Water Security, Post-War Reconstruction in Sudan

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi held high-level talks in Cairo on Monday with Sudanese Sovereignty Council Chairman General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, focusing on regional water security and Egypt's role in rebuilding war-torn Sudan. The meeting, held at Al-Ittihadiya Palace, underscored Egypt's commitment to supporting Sudan amid its ongoing internal conflict, which has ravaged the country since April 2023. Sisi reaffirmed his country's readiness to contribute to reconstruction efforts and help restore infrastructure destroyed by the civil war. In a joint statement, the two leaders emphasized their continued coordination to preserve the water security of both nations and rejected unilateral measures concerning the Nile River. Egyptian presidential spokesperson Mohamed al-Shennawy said the talks also covered broader regional issues, particularly developments in the Nile Basin and the Horn of Africa. 'There is complete alignment between Egypt and Sudan on the strategic importance of shared water resources and the need for regional stability,' al-Shennawy said. The two sides reiterated their opposition to unilateral actions related to the Blue Nile—Ethiopia's main tributary for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD). Egypt and Sudan have long called for a binding legal agreement with Ethiopia on the dam's operation to safeguard their downstream water rights. Al-Burhan's visit came at the invitation of Sisi and follows a series of diplomatic contacts aimed at bolstering bilateral cooperation. Sisi personally welcomed the Sudanese leader at Cairo Airport before accompanying him to the palace for official reception ceremonies. Talks included the recent battlefield developments in Sudan, where the Sudanese Armed Forces have reportedly regained control of the capital, Khartoum. Both leaders discussed coordinating efforts to support civilians in conflict zones and advance political and economic integration between the two countries. In expanded discussions involving ministers and senior officials from both sides, Egypt and Sudan agreed to accelerate joint projects in key sectors such as electricity interconnection, rail infrastructure, trade, agriculture, health, industry, mining, and cultural exchange. Sudan has been mired in civil war since mid-2023, pitting the national army against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The conflict has displaced over 14 million people, with more than 1.2 million seeking refuge in Egypt, according to UN figures. Sisi has consistently called for a ceasefire and stressed the importance of maintaining Sudan's territorial integrity and institutional stability. He recently condemned plans by the RSF to announce a parallel government in areas under its control, calling the move a direct threat to Sudan's unity and sovereignty. Sudanese Ambassador to Cairo Imad-Eddin Adawi hailed the summit as a testament to the 'depth and resilience' of Egyptian-Sudanese ties. 'There is a shared political will to move forward together,' he said, adding that Egypt plays a pivotal role in mediating regional stability and facilitating dialogue among Sudanese factions. Hossam Issa, Egypt's former assistant foreign minister for Sudan, described al-Burhan's visit as a 'milestone' in efforts to end the conflict. 'The recent military gains on the ground could pave the way for restoring governance in Khartoum and beginning the process of reconstruction,' he told Asharq Al-Awsat.

‘Aisha Can't Fly Away' ft. Ziad Zaza Selected for Cannes Film Festival

Marking Morad Mostafa's feature-length debut, the Egyptian-Sudanese co-production will premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Apr 10, 2025 Egyptian director Morad Mostafa returns to Cannes with his debut feature-length film 'Aisha Can't Fly Away', a social thriller starring Buiana Simon and Egyptian rapper Ziad Zaza. The film will premiere as part of the Un Certain Regard section, marking the first time in nearly a decade that an Egyptian film has been featured in this competitive sidebar. 'Aisha Can't Fly Away' tells the story of Aisha, a Sudanese refugee navigating a precarious life in Cairo's Ain Shams district. Set against the backdrop of economic hardship and systemic marginalisation, the film follows her search for agency and safety as she becomes entangled in a labyrinth of threats, mistrust, and survival. This is Ziad Zaza's third acting project following '60 Egyptian Pounds' and the crime-comedy series 'Prestige', both directed by Amr Salama. 'Aisha Can't Fly Away' also features Emad Ghoniem, and was shot by award-winning cinematographer Mostafa El Kashef, known for his work on 'Feathers' and 'Soula'. The feature marks Mostafa's transition from acclaimed short films—like 'Henet Ward' and 'I Promise You Paradise', which screened at festivals like Clermont-Ferrand, Palm Springs, and the Cannes Semaine de la Critique—into full-length cinema. Known for his emotionally grounded and socially conscious filmmaking, Mostafa continues to centre the lives of marginalised individuals in Egypt's overlooked communities. 'Aisha Can't Fly Away' is the first Egyptian film since 'Ali, the Goat and Ibrahim' (2016) to be included in the Un Certain Regard programme, which focuses on bold voices and emerging talent in world cinema. The 78th Cannes Film Festival will take place from May 14th to the 25th, 2025.

Egypt: Security Forces Free Egyptians ‘Kidnapped' by RSF in Sudan

Egyptian media reported on Thursday that security forces, in coordination with Sudanese authorities, successfully freed a group of Egyptians who had been 'kidnapped' by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) in Sudan. According to an informed Egyptian source who spoke to Asharq Al-Awsat, the freed Egyptians, who have since returned to Egypt following an operation conducted under the 'directives of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi,' were traders working in Khartoum. They had been detained by the RSF in areas under its control since last year. The source clarified that their release was secured through 'security arrangements with Sudanese authorities, without any direct Egyptian security intervention on the ground.' As reported by Egypt's Middle East News Agency, the Egyptian-Sudanese coordination led to the successful 'transfer of the freed Egyptians from conflict zones in central Khartoum to Port Sudan,' before their return to Egypt. The source also revealed that the Egyptians had initially 'refused voluntary repatriation when the internal conflict erupted in Sudan in mid-April 2023, fearing the loss of their businesses.' According to Egyptian local media, the number of freed individuals was seven, all from Fayoum (south of Cairo), who had been living in Sudan and engaged in the trade of household goods. The source explained that 'RSF control over Khartoum led to the seizure of properties belonging to Sudanese citizens and foreign nationals, including Egyptians.' He noted that 'the kidnapped group was among a small number of Egyptians who chose to remain in Sudan despite the outbreak of war, refusing to join the voluntary repatriation initiative.' Since the war began in Sudan, the Egyptian government has facilitated the return of approximately 10,000 citizens through air, land, and sea bridges, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Egyptian military expert Major General Samir Farag confirmed that the release of the detainees was achieved through 'understandings and communications between Egypt's security and sovereign agencies and their Sudanese counterparts, rather than through a direct Egyptian security operation inside Sudanese territory.'
