Photos: Acclaimed artist Britt Boutros Ghali to be showcased in Galerie Son solo exhibitions at Berlin, Seoul
Art lovers can eagerly look forward to two solo exhibitions by the celebrated Egyptian-Norwegian artist Britt Boutros Ghali in 2025, courtesy of Galerie Son, with showings in Berlin and Seoul, South Korea. The inaugural exhibition will commence on May 1, coinciding with the prestigious Berlin Gallery Weekend, and will continue its display until June 28th, 2025. The second exhibition will be held at an affiliated gallery in Seoul, South Korea, with specific dates will be announced soon. A prominent figure in European abstract expressionism, Ghali oeuvre is widely sought after by collectors and has garnered international exposure in private and public institutions alike. Ghali's work interweaves gestural abstraction and color with a unique sense of texture and material, delving into her inner world and the surrounding cultural influences. With influences ranging from the early impact of World War II, the striking landscapes of her Scandinavian upbringing to Egypt's rich cultural fabric – her adopted home since the mid-1970s – these are the experiences that shaped her artistic journey. Her canvases offer a captivating and poetic experience, where movement and intensity intertwine, imbued with a palpable spiritual resonance. Her current body of work, making its debut in a German solo exhibition – the first since the 1970s – reaffirms her enduring investigation into the nuances of color and the expressiveness of gesture. Through these canvases, an inherent energy and dynamism surge forth, the artist's draughtsmanship intentionally embodying the spirit of action, a force deliberately grounded in personal history and cultural symbolism. The Director of Galerie Son, Max Kofler, said, 'It is our distinct honor to welcome Brit back to Germany. The demand for her oeuvre has never been more profound. Her paintings resonate deeply with collectors spanning generations and continents, and we are delighted to share her latest body of work with discerning audiences in both Berlin and Seoul.' The artist in turn conveyed her profound pleasure in teaming up with Galerie Son and her return to Berlin and Germany after so many years, stating, 'Germany has always shown me great generosity, and I am deeply enthused about this recent collection of works. I eagerly anticipate presenting them at Galerie Son and to the vibrant audience of Berlin.' Ghali has traversed six illustrious decades in her artistic trajectory, demonstrating a true command of both abstract and figurative modes of expression. Possessing an arresting allure and a commanding presence, her paintings encapsulate the essence of life, the intangible world of the spirit, and the vivid dreamscapes. In 1996, her significant contributions to Norwegian art were acknowledged with the prestigious Royal Norwegian Order of St. Olav, Knight First Class, an honor placing her in the company of Norwegian painter Edvard Munch. The Egyptian National Council for Women acknowledged her enduring contribution to Egypt's cultural sphere by presenting her with the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2023.

NCW Report: 633 Scenes of Violence Against Women in Ramadan 2025 Shows
NCW Report: 633 Scenes of Violence Against Women in Ramadan 2025 Shows The Egyptian National Council for Women (NCW) has published a report analysing the portrayal of women across 39 Egyptian television series aired during Ramadan 2025. Conducted in collaboration with 238 students, along with researchers and faculty members from various public and private universities, the report offers a comprehensive review of the season's programming through media monitoring and analysis of press coverage. Among its findings, the report noted several positive developments. Nineteen series featured female protagonists with equal or more prominent roles than male counterparts. Some shows tackled pressing social issues affecting Egyptian women, such as labour rights in 'Hesbet Omry', digital blackmail and unpunished psychological abuse in 'Kamel El Adad', and sexual and domestic violence in 'Lam Shamseya'. These portrayals were generally well-received by viewers. Meanwhile, 'Seed El Nas' and 'El Atawla' were singled out for criticism due to their depictions of violence. The report also highlighted an evolving portrayal of stepmothers in Egyptian drama, with more layered and sympathetic representations appearing in series such as 'Kamel El Adad' and 'Alby We Moftaho'. However, the report flagged several areas of concern. It recorded 633 scenes depicting violence against women—ranging from physical and psychological abuse to digital harassment. Additionally, the NCW noted the prevalence of offensive language, sexual innuendo, and inappropriate content. The report criticised recurring tropes in which women were portrayed as weak, opportunistic, or, conversely, as possessive and domineering figures. Beyond television series, the report assessed the representation of women in advertising. Of 221 commercials aired during Ramadan, women featured in 202, often cast in roles such as doctors, entrepreneurs, and teachers. The report also monitored the role of women in broadcast media, noting an overall positive presence, despite some violations in programmes such as 'Ramez Gab Men El Akher', 'Crazy Woman', and 'Al Arafa'. In its conclusion, the NCW issued a series of recommendations aimed at encouraging more responsible storytelling. These include promoting balanced representations of women, expanding portrayals to include rural and Bedouin communities, and reducing the use of violence, sexualised content, and offensive language in mainstream media
