'Top Gun 3' already in bag, says Christopher McQuarrie
Christopher McQuarrie, the director of Mission: Impossible -- The Final Reckoning, has shared updates on his upcoming collaborations with Tom Cruise, including the highly anticipated Top Gun 3. According to Deadline, in a recent interview, McQuarrie revealed that the sequel to Top Gun: Maverick is "already in the bag," with a framework for the story already in place. McQuarrie credited co-writer Ehren Kruger with pitching an idea that sparked the framework for the sequel. "It wasn't hard," McQuarrie said, adding, "I thought it would be, and that's a good place to go from is you walk into the room going, 'Come on, what are we going to do?'" McQuarrie emphasised that the challenge lies not in developing the story but in executing it and capturing the emotional depth that makes the films resonate. When asked if he would consider directing Top Gun 3, McQuarrie said he had given it "absolutely no thought," as quoted by Deadline. However, he did mention that he has been studying Tony Scott's directing style, who helmed the original Top Gun. McQuarrie also provided updates on a potential Tropic Thunder spinoff featuring Cruise's character Les Grossman. "Everything is a priority, everything will -- in one way or another -- happen," he said. The duo has been brainstorming ideas and "playing with scenes" during downtime on set. McQuarrie expressed his enthusiasm for a Days of Thunder sequel, saying he knew the premise of the movie in just five seconds. "I looked at the response to Top Gun: Maverick and immediately turned to Tom and said, Days of Thunder," he revealed.

Christopher McQuarrie Says 'Top Gun 3' Plot Is 'Already In The Bag'
Top Gun 3 has reportedly made some headway, with filmmaker Christopher McQuarrie revealing that he has already nailed down the storyline for the sequel. McQuarrie, who helmed the recent blockbuster Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning , alongside writing and co-producing 2022's Top Gun: Maverick , spoke on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, where he explained that coming up with the plot for the sequel was easier than expected. Top Gun: Maverick (2022) When asked if Top Gun 3's story was 'harder to crack' than its predecessor, McQuarrie revealed that it was 'already in the bag,' adding that he already knows what the story is. 'It wasn't hard,' he explained, 'I thought it would be, and that's a good place to go from as you walk into the room going, 'Come on, what are we going to do?' And Ehren Kruger pitched something and I went, 'Mhm actually,' and we had one conversation about it and the framework is there. So, no, it's not hard to crack. The truth of the matter is, none of these are hard to crack.' 'It's as you start to execute it, and as you start to interrogate it, as you start [to think] why these movies are made the way they are,' he added, 'It's not the action, it's not even the level of or intensity of or the scope and scale of the action [or] the engineering around the action, it's none of those things — it's the emotion.' Top Gun (1986) When asked if he would step into a director role for the sequel, taking over from Top Gun: Maverick helmer Joseph Kosinski, McQuarrie replied that he had given the prospect 'absolutely no thought whatsoever', although he did admit to doing a lot of research on Tony Scott's movies, the late film director who helmed the original 1986 movie Top Gun . This isn't the first time the Top Gun threequel has been teased by those working on the project either, as franchise icon Tom Cruise, who played Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in both films, previously said that he was actively working on not only Top Gun 3, but a potential sequel to 1990's Days of Thunder too. 'Yeah, we're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible,' Cruise said during an interview with the Today Show Australia, 'It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick , so all of these things we're working on, we're discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick .' Tom Cruise fans go wild as Top Gun 3 gets major update
Tom Cruise fans went wild on Monday over some big news about Top Gun 3. The actor's Mission: Impossible director Christopher McQuarrie, who had a writing credit on Top Gun: Maverick, said on the Happy Sad Confused podcast that Top Gun 3 is far along. 'It's already in the bag. I already know what it is. It wasn't hard,' said the director. 'I thought it would be, and that's a good place to walk from.' He added, 'You walk into the room going, "Come on, what are we going to do?" and Ehren Kruger [Top Gun: Maverick co-writer] pitched something, and we had one conversation about it. The framework is there, so it's not hard to crack [it].' McQuarrie also said that he does not know who will direct the film. Earlier this month Cruise made it seem as if TP3 was far off. He revealed he and the Top Gun: Maverick team are 'thinking and talking about many different stories' for the sequel. The 62-year-old actor is set to reprise his role as pilot Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in the upcoming follow-up to the 2022 blockbuster, and has now shared he and the creative team are currently exploring different avenues of where to take the Top Gun story next. During an appearance on the Australian 'Today' show, Cruise said: 'Yeah, we're thinking and talking about many different stories and what could we do and what's possible. 'It took me 35 years to figure out Top Gun: Maverick so all of these things we're working on, we're discussing Days of Thunder and Top Gun: Maverick.' The star added he was working on 'numerous other films' at the moment, including Alejandro Iñárritu's first English language movie since 2015's The Revenant, and other projects with McQuarrie. He said: 'There's numerous other films that we're actively working on right now. I'm always shooting a film, prepping a film, posting a film. 'I just finished a film with Alejandro Iñárritu too, who did The Revenant, that was an extraordinary experience and McQuarrie and I are always working on several different films.' Top Gun: Maverick - which is the legacy sequel to 1986's Top Gun - followed Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell (Cruise) as he trained the next generation of TOPGUN pilots, including Bradley 'Rooster' Bradshaw (Miles Teller) Jake 'Hangman' Seresin (Glen Powell) and Robert 'Bob' Floyd (Lewis Pullman). As well as introducing a host of new characters, Top Gun: Maverick reunited Cruise's 'Maverick' with Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky, as portrayed by the late Val Kilmer - who passed away last month at the age of 65 from complications related to pneumonia following a long period of ill health - which Cruise described as a 'very special' moment. Speaking with Sight and Sound magazine, the Jack Reacher star said: 'To come back all those years later, and it was amazing being on set for 'Top Gun: Maverick' because it was like time had not passed. We were laughing and it was joyous. 'And then we started acting and it's just, you see it … he became 'Iceman'. The power that this guy has, even not saying anything, to become that character. You see how even the sniff that he gave. He was 'Iceman'. 'And you saw the dynamic between these friends. It was very special, to say the least, for me personally. 'I just tell people … you take Iceman from the first film and you look at it here, that whole journey, he became 'Iceman'. And he didn't even have to speak. 'That's what he's able to do. Beautiful, really beautiful. A gift that he had and that he shared with all of us.' Also last week Cruise said he is 'never going to slow down'. The actor has enjoyed a hugely successful career in the film business, and Tom doesn't have any intention of taking a break. He told The Hollywood Reporter: 'I'm going to make them into my 100s. I will never stop. I will never stop doing action, I will never stop doing drama, comedy films — I'm excited.' Tom has starred in the Mission: Impossible film franchise since 1996, and remains passionate about making movies. Recalling his 'exceptional' experience of making the films, Tom said: 'There's been so many levels of reward with the filmmakers that I've collaborated with, the crews, the people, the cultures that we've worked in. 'Everything that I've learned and continue to learn about storytelling, about life, about leadership, about character and every aspect of filmmaking. 'It's been exceptional, it really is exceptional. I feel very fortunate to be able to make the films that I make, and I love it, I just love making movies.' Tom has filmed countless stunts for the Mission: Impossible franchise, and he's developed a series of 'pre-stunt rituals' in a bid to 'keep [him] alive'. He shared: 'There's a lot of pre-stunt rituals that keep me alive - it depends on what I'm doing and the amount of preparation I have to do. 'A lot of thought goes into it, and they are very complex and very interesting.' This comes as his Mission costar Hayley Atwell insisted that he remains as ambitious as ever. The brunette told People: 'There is that sense of the emotional end of something that feels like a very emotional closure. And yet, Tom Cruise is never going to slow down. He won't ever stop. This is who he is.' Angela Bassett, who also stars in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, suggested that Tom could revive the 'Mission: Impossible' franchise one day. The 66-year-old actress said: 'With Mr. Cruise, you can never count him down or out. He's always up for an amazing adventure and to give the audience exactly what they're craving. I would never assume.'
