Ahead of Micron's arrival, Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital opens new pediatrics site
LIVERPOOL, N.Y. (WSYR) — Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital is expanding to Liverpool as Central New York prepares for Micron's arrival. On Monday afternoon, a ribbon-cutting ceremony was held at the new pediatrics location to address the growing need for pediatric care in the area.
During the event, Erica Arena spoke highly of the care her eight-year-old daughter, Domina Eighmey, started receiving at four months old. After Eighmey was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition, known as Edwards Syndrome, before she entered the world, Arena was able to find a pediatric team that could give her a chance at life.
'You know, we came here, not knowing what her life expectancy was going to be and kind of just took it from there…and let her show us the way,' Arena said. 'Everybody has been so kind.'
Dr. Gregory Conners, MD, Chair of Pediatrics for Upstate, said Eighmey's story is a real testament to family.
'Our community is growing and continuing to grow, and I think that people are finding more and more reasons to come to Upstate and seek pediatric care,' Dr. Conners said. 'We're doing a great job, and I think people are appreciating that.'
Before Micron's groundbreaking, the Chief Nursing Officer at Upstate, Scott Jessie, said the hospital needs to be ready to expand further to meet the community's needs.
Jessie added that Monday marks not only the opening of a new space, but a new chapter for how Upstate cares for children and families.
The new site is a relocation from Upstate Pediatrics in Baldwinsville, doubling in size, over 12,000 square feet, with 20 exam rooms and a room to monitor behavioral health concerns.
'We have new people coming this year,' Dr. Conners said. 'We continue to grow, but we're going to really need to grow a lot, so we're trying to put our best face forward.'
Doctors will start seeing patients on Tuesday. The new site is located at 8687 Carling Road, Liverpool.
