Republic of Ireland beaten by Slovenia in Nations League

The Republic of Ireland went down to a 4-0 defeat by a clinical Slovenia side in their second Uefa Nations League game. The hosts led 3-0 at the break thanks to ruthless finishing as they cut through the Irish defence and capitalised on their chances. Slovenia struck after just three minutes with Lara Prasnikar firing past Courtney Brosnan and into the top corner. The striker flicked in at the near-post to double the lead before Zara Kamsar added the third with a close-range finish. The visitors dominated the second half but failed to find the net again until substitute Nina Kajzba blasted home after 82 minutes in a rare Slovenia attack. Denise O'Sullivan went closest for the Irish by hitting the crossbar a minute later on what was a frustrating night for the team. Carla Ward started her reign as Republic of Ireland manager with a win over Turkey on Friday night but she have much to ponder after this disappointing performance. It was the perfect start for Slovenia as they sought to make it two wins from two games after beating Greece in their opening Nations League game on Friday. Kramzar's long pass found an unmarked Prasnikar and she race through before placing her shot beyond Brosnan and into the net. The Republic threatened a quick response to going a goal down with Zala Mersnik at full stretch to keep out O'Sullivan's strike but that was as good as it got for the visitors in the opening half. Eintract Frankfurt forward Prasnikar completed her double on 28 minutes with a volleyed finish from Kaja Korosec's corner as the hosts extended their lead. Their third arrived six minutes later after another flowing move ended with Maja Sternard setting up Kamzar to slide the ball in at the back-post. Only a fine save from Brosnan denied Slovakia a fourth before the break as she blocked Sternard's effort. Slovenia sat back on their lead in the second half but Carla Ward's side were unable to turn dominance in possession into goals. Kyra Carusa headed wide from Katie McCabe's deep cross before O'Sullivan sent a dipping shot wide. The North Carolina Courage captain had another effort to give the visitors a fighting chance but missed out when Mersnik made a fine save to keep out her low strike. Mersnik was back in action again to make a save from a fierce McCabe shot as the Irish pushed hard to get back in the game. Their hopes were finally ended by Kajzba as she found space before rifling into the corner of the net. The Republic kept pressing and were so close to getting on the scoresheet when O'Sullivan was denied by the woodwork.

Guardiola delighted with impact of new signings in Newcastle win

Pep Guardiola was delighted with the performances of City's January signings in our 4-0 victory over Newcastle United in the Premier League. Omar Marmoush, Nico and Abdukodir Khusanov all impressed as we secured an excellent victory that moves us up to fourth in the table. Marmoush scored a hat-trick in just 14 minutes on a special day for the Egyptian following his move from German side Eintract Frankfurt last month. Guardiola says the 26-year-old's movement is extremely dangerous and says he need stay calm after the praise he will receive. 'The highlights are for him, of course,' the City boss said. 'Three goals, we knew it - in Germany at Frankfurt he made good numbers. 'Against Leyton Orient he had three clear chances and couldn't score but we knew sooner or later. 'The dynamic of the group was good and performance was good. He showed what he is. 'Hopefully he can handle the biggest compliments that are coming. It's non-stop. It's so simple, when you play good everyone adapts quickly but when you don't play good, you need time. It's not difficult. GET YOUR MARMOUSH #7 SHIRT 'When we played against Chelsea, he played good and we won. He's a player that we missed, his movements in behind and his pace. 'He likes to attack the space and he helps to play with more time. When we play like we did today, everyone is better - even the manager!' Nico made his debut at the Etihad Stadium and had a strong performance alongside Ilkay Gundogan and Phil Foden as our midfield took control. And fellow new signing Khusanov helped City keep a clean sheet as the in-form Alexander Isak was kept largely quiet by our back-line. 'The presence from Nico help us a lot in the 50/50s,' Guardiola added. 'He wins seven and we can run. If he loses seven, they would run. 'The club made an incredible investment for the future. He was a player in the Barcelona academy, which is the best in the world to teach you things like body shape. '[Former Porto boss Sergio] Conceicao helped him a lot to improve being aggressive and smart and how to play different types of game. 'He's 23, like a mini-Rodri. It's a big compliment but he has a feeling with that presence. He wins the duels. He's far away in other things because Rodri is the best.' On our Uzbekistan defender, he added: 'The pace from Khusanov when they make transitions, that's why we bought him. He's so fast. 'He's too aggressive in duels and when you don't win the ball it's a transition, but it's a question of time and he will learn.' Savinho also continues to thrive following his summer move and the Brazilian winger was influential again in our win over the Magpies. 'The impact from Savinho in his first season in England, with goals and assists, I didn't expect it,' Guardiola said. 'I knew from Girona he was a top, top player but I didn't expect the influence he would have in our games. 'Hopefully we can be calm. This season is just to survive but hopefully this game can give us confidence for the season.'
