McIver charges ‘absurd': Former White House ethics lawyer

Former Obama-era White House ethics lawyer Norm Eisen called the criminal charge against Rep. LaMonica McIver (D-N.J.) 'absurd' and predicted it would 'not stand' up in court. 'We've all seen that video, and it's absurd to charge a member of Congress, Representative McIver, with doing anything other than doing her job,' Eisen, a frequent critic of President Trump's administration, said in an interview Monday night on MSNBC. 'Yes, it was an intense situation. There was no crime there,' he added. Alina Habba, the interim U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, announced on Monday she is charging McIver for allegedly assaulting law enforcement while at an U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention center in Newark earlier this month. The announcement stems from a skirmish during McIver's visit to the Delaney Hall ICE detention center earlier this month alongside fellow New Jersey Democrats, Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman and Rob Menendez, and with Newark Mayor Ras Baraka (D), who was arrested on a misdemeanor trespassing charge, which Habba's office also announced Monday would be dropped. McIver and allies have disputed the 'assault' characterization and argued the congresswoman would not have been granted access to the facility and given an hour-long tour of the center by administration officials had she first broken the law. The announcement Monday also marks the first time Trump's Justice Department has criminally charged a sitting lawmaker during his second term. Eisen, who has brought legal challenges against various moves by the Trump administration, slammed the federal government for pursuing the charges. 'The Department of Justice under Donald Trump and AG Pam Bondi is running amok,' he said. 'Donald Trump promised he'd be a dictator on day one. He kept going. This is the latest example.' 'No normal administration would do this, but the courts are going to have the last word with this. This will not stand,' Eisen added. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Gregg Giannotti goes scorched earth on Rich Eisen before ESPN return: ‘Like smelling salts'

Gregg Giannotti has just one use for Rich Eisen's sports talkshow. 'The talk show is Ambien,' the WFAN 'Boomer & Gio' host said Thursday. 'Any clip that I see, it feels like they're doing a remote from a funeral home. It could not be more boring.' Gionnotti shredded the popular NFL voice for being a terrible talkshow conductor after the recent reveal that Eisen will be returning to ESPN with his self-named show nearly two decades after he exited. ESPN will begin airing Eisen's program this fall as part of the sports giant's direct-to-consumer service, according to The Athletic, along with ESPN+ and Disney+. 'He's got to be the most boring talkshow host in America,' Giannotti said of the 'The Rich Eisen Show' on Thursday. 'Why is everyone talking about him? Why does he have all these jobs?' Eisen largely is viewed in a positive lens, becoming a popular 'SportsCenter' host in the late 1990s and early 2000s before leaving for NFL Network in 2003. 'The Rich Eisen Show' then debuted in 2014 and is now aired on Roku. Giannotti praised Eisen for his 'SportsCenter' days, calling him a good studio host and complimenting his work when providing highlights. Riche Eisen interviewing Kevin Costner on his show in 2017. The Rich Eisen Show But that's where the praise ended. Giannotti referenced the time when Eisen hosted the 2023 NAB Marconi Radio Awards, describing his experience as 'Holy hell, I'm like I needed to get tased.' He added: '(It) was like smelling salts.' The WFAN host, who's known for his impressions, then referenced how controversial ESPN host Pat McAfee seemingly believes Eisen's return is a shot at him. McAfee mentioned how the two will be live at the same time, from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. ET weekdays, calling it a 'counter program.' 'That feels very interesting,' McAfee said on his self-named show Tuesday. 'But also, love Rich Eisen, so I am cool with whatever… Noon-to-3 is fascinating, for sure. Is that a message? I don't know. But yeah, cool, whatever. But nonetheless, we're happy Rich is back.' Gregg Giannotti (r) is not a fan of Rich Eisen. @awfulannouncing/X Giannotti wondered how McAfee could even be concerned in the slightest since he believes there's an enormous gap between the two programs. 'If Pat McAfee is really worried about Rich Eisen messing with his show, then some executive is gonna get fired because Pat McAfee's show is interesting and entertaining, and he's done a really amazing job of carving out a niche…' Giannotti said. 'I can't imagine that that's actually a real thing, that they're trying to send Pat McAfee a message by putting on Rich Eisen.'

NFL schedule release: Rich Eisen spouts conspiracy theory that Week 1 game proves Aaron Rodgers will sign with Steelers

The fact that the NFL schedule release has become a huge offseason event speaks to the league's popularity with fans. Both and league and its teams try and go all-out during the release, adding humor, controversy and drama to an event that would otherwise be mundane. Well, now the NFL schedule release also has conspiracy theories. Advertisement NFL Network's own Rich Eisen engaged in some major speculation following the schedule release Wednesday night. While appearing on the network, Eisen suggested the Pittsburgh Steelers' Week 1 opponent was a massive clue the NFL expects Aaron Rodgers to sign with the team. Eisen's reasoning was pretty simple. The Steelers are playing the New York Jets in Week 1. If Rodgers signs with the Steelers, it would represent a revenge game for the 41-year-old, who was cut by the Jets in the offseason. While that alone is pretty tantalizing, it doesn't tell the entire story. The Jets-Steelers Week 1 matchup already is a revenge game. After starting six games with the Steelers last season, Justin Fields signed a two-year, $40 million deal with the Jets in the offseason. He's going to be the team's starter in 2025. Advertisement Additionally, Rodgers' return to New York in Week 1 would be a pretty big storyline, one the league might deem worthy of a prime-time slot. That's not how it's scheduled. The Steelers and Jets will square off as part of the 1 p.m. ET slate in Week 1. The two teams will have to share the attention with 14 other franchises at that time. That's exactly the argument the NFL's schedule guru made when discussing the contest. Mike North, the NFL's vice president of broadcast planning and scheduling, spoke with Jonathan Jones about the 2025 NFL schedule, and said the league would have made a bigger deal about Rodgers' return to New York if it knew he was signing with the Steelers. "You'll see Pittsburgh at the Jets are on CBS at 1 o'clock in the afternoon in Week 1 along with seven other NFL games all at the same time. I think if the league knew, we probably would've scheduled that game for a national television window. So at worst, it's Justin Fields against his old team. At best, it's Aaron Rogers going up against one of his old teams. Look at what we did with Aaron Rogers' first game the last two years (both Monday night games). If we knew something, I think you would've seen it reflected in the schedule. That being said, still a good game." North has a point. The league has pushed Rodgers into the spotlight in recent seasons. His first game with the Jets took place on "Monday Night Football" in 2023. Rodgers played just four snaps in that contest due to a torn Achilles. The following season, the Jets once again opened on "Monday Night Football." This time, Rodgers was returning from the injury and playing the team that passed on him at No. 1 overall in the 2005 NFL Draft. In both instances, the league put storylines involving Rodgers front and center. That won't be the case in Week 1 this year. Advertisement You don't exactly need conspiracy theories to connect Rodgers and the Steelers. The two sides have courted each other all offseason. Rodgers met with the franchise back in March, and Rodgers threw with newly-acquired Steelers wideout DK Metcalf around the same time. Despite a massive need under center, the Steelers stayed patient in the 2025 NFL Draft, waiting until the sixth round to select Ohio State quarterback Will Howard. Unless the Steelers really intend to go into the 2025 NFL season with Mason Rudolph as their starter, the team is likely to bring in another quarterback before the offseason is over. Rodgers is the most logical option on the market. The NFL is definitely aware of that, and may have even considered it when scheduling the Steelers' Week 1 opponent. That doesn't mean there's some vast conspiracy afoot, it means the league exercises some intelligence when making its schedule.

Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week: FRIEREN

Welcome to this week's installment of Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week, wherein we shine a spotlight on strong women who inspire us. These ladies are a prime example of female empowerment and how crucial it is for youth to have said example to follow. DISCLAIMER: This article contains spoilers for Season 1 of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End . Frieren Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Madhouse Fast Facts Frieren is the titular main character of the animanga Frieren: Beyond Journey's End . We meet her as an exceptionally gifted elven mage who, despite her 1,000-year age, hasn't quite learned to appreciate the short lives of humans or the little time she has with them. This changes when she reunites with her old party, some 50 years after their defeat of the Demon King. Himmel, the once-young and compassionate hero of the bunch, has passed in his old age. Alongside Eisen, the warrior, and Heiter, the priest, Frieren and her remaining party members gather to lay their late friend to rest. It's in this moment that she comes to understand just how precious human life truly is. RELATED: Geek Girl Authority Crush of the Week: T'Pol To celebrate Himmel and the memories he and Frieren shared, the mage embarks on a new journey to relive the adventure she now holds dear. By Heiter's request, she mentors an aspiring mage named Fern, accompanying the young girl following the priest's passing. Joined by the budding warrior Stark, Frieren has found a new party to journey with. This time, she vows to make it count. She still has a lot to learn when it comes to human connections and the mundane, though. These quirks have led many series fans to speculate that Frieren is autistic-coded (myself included). An avid collector of grimoires and odd spells, to boot, she's far more well-read than the average mage. But this innocuous hobby also gets her into trouble. Frieren can't resist a magic chest when she sees one, and she's known to fall for many a mimic. Her penchant for small treasures and even the most seemingly useless spells is the very reason she fails her first-class mage exam, despite her obvious ability. The Limits of Time Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Madhouse As an elf, Frieren is generally unfamiliar with the limits of time. When you've got thousands more years to look forward to, it's easy to lose sight of the day-to-day. But if she's learned anything from Himmel, Heiter and Eisen, it's that our relationships with one another and the memories we share make life worth living. RELATED: This Original Naruto Scene Still Holds Up 20 Years Later At the heart of Frieren's story is her connection with Himmel, lost to time and taken for granted. He showed Frieren, in many ways, what it is to be human. The great mage is reminded of Himmel and the loved ones she's lost as she makes new memories with Fern and Stark. Given the circumstances, it would be easy to spin a tale of grief. But Frieren chooses instead to honor Himmel and Heiter at every turn, oftentimes paying respect to her old friends by caring for new ones in sickness or choosing the perfect birthday gift. This way, the two will live on with her. The Real Deal Madhouse Frieren is the real deal. In-universe, her mana is nearly unmatched. Not only that, but she's also a pro at keeping this ace close to her chest, so to speak. This makes her a most formidable opponent to all, but especially to the demon race. For centuries, demons have conned their way to power, almost wiping out the elven population in its entirety. By concealing her mana, Frieren is able to trick her enemies into believing they hold the advantage. This strategy led her to victory over Aura the Guillotine and, eventually, the Demon King. Alongside her party members, she's widely recognized as the great mage who's killed more demons than anyone else in history. RELATED: 6 Comfy Anime Shows to Binge-Watch These feats aside, Frieren's mastery of magic is another for the history books. Her lengthy lifespan as an elf lends her the privilege of time, which she spends practicing magic. Through combat experience and her personal studies, she's made invaluable contributions to humanity's analysis of Zoltrak. This offensive magic technique, though once all-powerful, is now standard practice among magic-users thanks to Frieren. Why She Matters Why does Frieren matter? She might be one of the most powerful mages around, but she also teaches us that real strength isn't solely defined by skill or technical prowess. It's refreshing to see a female character reach such heights in anime, as many are often relegated to roles beneath their male counterparts. RELATED: Looking for another crush? Check out our Geek Girl Authority Crushes of the Week Through Frieren's decades-long journeys, we learn that human relationships, no matter how short-lived, are inherently meaningful. They give us the insight we need to reach our fullest potential by seeing our quirks admired, our shortcomings accepted and our daily accomplishments celebrated. Love makes us strong. It also makes our time in this world worthwhile. These are worthy lessons for us all to learn, and Frieren makes a great teacher. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End, Madhouse Beyond the canon, Frieren also sets an example for neurodivergent fans. It's not often that autism is represented thoughtfully in media. This goes doubly so for autistic girls and women, who have found a role model and comfort character in the titular mage. So, be like Frieren. Take every chance you get to appreciate the people you love, and open yourself up to the possibility to be loved in return. Your quirks and idiosyncrasies — the things that make you you — is the stuff worth loving the most. Sure, there's strength to be found in standing on your own two feet. But when we open our arms to others, they can help us learn and grow in ways we never imagined possible on our own. Unless we're talking about demons, of course. They're best kept at a safe distance. The first season of Frieren: Beyond Journey's End is currently streaming on Crunchyroll. Anime Roundup: Everything Coming Out in April 2025 (Part 2)
