Dahab and Nuweiba to get two new hospitals as part of health insurance rollout - Health
The Egypt Healthcare Authority (EHA) announced on Tuesday that two new hospitals will open in Dahab and Nuweiba in South Sinai in early fiscal year 2025/26 as part of Egypt's push to expand its Universal Health Insurance System (UHIS). South Sinai is one of six governorates in the first phase of Egypt's national health insurance rollout, which is due to conclude in July 2025 with the addition of Aswan. The UHIS aims to cover the entire population by 2030. According to Egypt Healthcare Authority Chairman Ahmed El-Sobky, the hospitals' construction cost a combined EGP 1.3 billion. Nuweibaa Central Hospital, covering 5,000 square metres, has 42 dialysis machines and departments for inpatient care, intensive care, emergency services, surgery, radiology, endoscopy, labs, a blood bank, and 10 outpatient clinics. The project cost over EGP 600 million. Meanwhile, Dahab New Hospital includes 58 beds, six outpatient clinics, a neonatal intensive care unit, labs, emergency surgery, dialysis, radiology, endoscopy, and blood services departments. Construction and equipment costs totalled EGP 728 million. The two facilities join five other hospitals already operating under the authority in South Sinai: Sharm El-Sheikh International, Ras Sedr Specialized, Taba Central, Saint Catherine, and Al-Fayrouz Medical Complex. Together, they have delivered more than 1.5 million medical services since the UHIS launched in the region in 2018. Staff from existing hospitals will begin transferring to the new system in the next fiscal year and will be trained to meet UHIS standards. El-Sobky said the state has spent more than EGP 4 billion on operating the scheme in South Sinai, including infrastructure and equipment. Follow us on: Facebook Instagram Whatsapp Short link:

Egypt Prepares First AI-Powered National Platform for Remote Diagnosis
Backed by WHO guidelines, the new platform aims to boost diagnostic speed and accuracy across Egypt's healthcare system. May 13, 2025 Egypt is preparing the pilot launch of its first national artificial intelligence-based platform for remote medical diagnosis, according to Dr. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairman of the General Authority for Healthcare and Supervisor of the Comprehensive Health Insurance Project. The new platform will rely on the latest treatment protocols issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), with the goal of improving diagnostic accuracy and reducing response times across public health services. The announcement came during a meeting between Dr. El-Sobky and Dr. Nima Saeed Abid, WHO Representative in Egypt, as the two parties discussed strategies to advance the country's healthcare system. Dr. El-Sobky noted that the Authority is already a regional leader in adopting global medical standards, having implemented both the ICD-11 disease classification and ICHI intervention coding systems—becoming the first healthcare body in the MENA region to do so. These systems are expected to significantly improve public health tracking, inform national health policies, and support clinical decision-making at scale. The AI platform is part of a broader digital transformation plan aimed at aligning Egypt's healthcare sector with international best practices. The collaboration between WHO and the General Authority for Healthcare focuses on six key areas, including joint research, the establishment of a WHO-accredited emergency medical team, and the launch of a Collaboration Centre specialising in clinical governance and infection control. These initiatives are designed to enhance care quality and safety across Egypt's healthcare infrastructure.

In a high-level visit to Aswan, EU Ambassador to Egypt and the Arab League, Angelina Eichhorst, toured several public hospitals affiliated with Egypt's General Authority for Healthcare (GAHC), including Al-Massalah Specialized Hospital. She was accompanied by Amal Ammar, President of the National Council for Women, and Ismail Kamal, Governor of Aswan. The visit aimed to evaluate progress under Egypt's Universal Health Insurance System. Ambassador Eichhorst expressed her admiration for the quality of care provided, describing it as 'remarkable,' and said it reflects the Egyptian state's commitment to enhancing public services and improving citizens' quality of life. Ahmed El-Sobky, Chairperson of the GAHC and General Supervisor of the Universal Health Insurance Project, welcomed the praise, noting it affirms Egypt's alignment with global standards of healthcare quality and sustainability. He highlighted that the EU ambassador's remarks underscore growing international confidence in Egypt's healthcare model. El-Sobky emphasized that the ongoing expansion of health insurance coverage in Aswan is a direct reflection of President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi's vision for equitable healthcare nationwide. He added that Upper Egypt plays a central role in the government's development plans, with a focus on patient-centered services and adherence to international benchmarks. He also pointed to the comprehensive strategic partnership signed between Egypt and the European Union on March 17, 2024, during President Al-Sisi's meeting with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. The agreement, he said, marks a key milestone for deeper cooperation in the health sector and the pursuit of inclusive, sustainable healthcare reform. Ambassador Eichhorst reiterated the EU's strong support for Egypt's healthcare transformation, noting that Egypt is one of the EU's largest recipients of trust and development assistance. She described the partnership as a testament to the importance of continued collaboration between both sides. El-Sobky concluded by affirming that Aswan holds a prominent place in the Authority's roadmap for expanding access to advanced healthcare services. He stressed that this aligns with national directives to ensure fair and comprehensive health coverage across all governorates participating in the Universal Health Insurance System.
