Al Ahly, Inter Miami draw in goalless FIFA Club World Cup opener
Miami, June 15 (UNI) Egypt international forward Trezeguet missed a first-half penalty as Al Ahly drew 0-0 with Inter Miami in the opening match of the FIFA Club World Cup here. Al Ahly looked more dangerous early at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami but the Cairo-based side was denied by a series of fine saves from Oscar Ustari on Saturday. First, the veteran Argentine goalkeeper kept out an attempt from Wessam Abou Ali after a swift counterattack and then he parried away Emam Ashour's goal-bound effort following a driving run from Trezeguet. Al Ahly suffered a blow in the 14th minute when Ashour was forced off following a collision and replaced by Zizo. The midfielder's exit briefly appeared to spark life into the Major League Soccer outfit and Lionel Messi had his team's first clear chance shortly after, sending a free-kick just over the bar. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner then delivered a defense-splitting pass for Noah Allen, only for the defender to be beaten to the ball by the onrushing goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy. Inter Miami was lucky not to go 1-0 down in the 30th minute when Abou Ali slotted the ball into the back of the net only to be flagged for a marginal offside. The latter went close again with a dipping 30-yard free-kick that Ustari somehow managed to tip over the bar. Inter Miami had Ustari to thank once more when he saved from point-blank range following Achraf Dari's header. Zizo was causing Inter Miami problems with his clever runs into space and the Egypt international earned his side a penalty when he was brought down in a clumsy challenge from Telasco Segovia. But Ustari was up to the challenge, diving to his right to keep out Trezeguet's spot-kick. Inter Miami emerged from the halftime break with renewed verve and El Shenawy did well to smother Tadeo Allende's powerful attempt from inside the six-yard box. Messi looked more threatening as the game progressed as the Florida club began dictating terms. The former Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain star forced another smart save from El Shenawy with a venomous effort from the edge of the 18-yard box before curling a low 35-yard free-kick around the well and into the side netting. Fafa Picault replaced Allende in the 81st minute and he made an immediate impact, latching onto Messi's cross with a header that was tipped over by El Shenawy. Inter Miami was desperately unlucky not to break the deadlock in stoppage time as El Shenawy palmed over Messi's 30-yard shot before showing sharp reflexes to keep out Maximiliano Falcon's header. Inter Miami's next match will be against Porto in Atlanta on June 19 while Al Ahly will face Palmeiras in New Jersey the same day. UNI/XINHUA BM

Lionel Messi denied late winner in Club World Cup opener
Inter Miami's Lionel Messi challenging for the ball against Al Ahly's Marawan Attia during the Club World Cup opener on June 14. EPA-EFE MIAMI – Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano was upbeat despite his Lionel Messi-led team drawing 0-0 with Egyptian side Al Ahly on June 14, as Fifa's new 32-team Club World Cup got off to a smooth start in front of 60,927 fans in Florida. Messi was denied a storybook stoppage-time winner when he saw his curling shot from 20 yards out tipped on to the bar by Mohamed El Shenawy as Miami piled on the pressure in the final minutes of the game. 'The truth is we leave with the feeling that we could have won it in the second half,' said Mascherano. 'Going forward we have to do what we did in the second half, not have any fear, shed whatever baggage we had because when we play like that, we can play even with any team.' Al Ahly, who were cheered on by over 10,000 of their supporters, were left to rue a first-half penalty from Egypt international Trezeguet which was saved by Miami's Argentine keeper Oscar Ustari. But the Egyptians also had El Shenawy to thank for another fine save in the dying seconds to keep out a header from Maxi Falcon as Miami pushed for three points in the Group A clash. For organisers Fifa, who have faced heavy skepticism over the necessity for the tournament, the absence of a goal was the only disappointment on a night that delivered everything else that their president Gianni Infantino had hoped for from the opening night. Fears of a low crowd for the opener eased as the seats in the 64,000 venue began to fill up with the stadium almost full at kick-off time. Thousands of fans of Al Ahly, record 12 times African Champions League winner and 45-time league champions of Egypt, arrived at Hard Rock Stadium well ahead of kick-off and made their presence felt with singing and chanting. The stadium, home to the NFL's Miami Dolphins, witnessed chaotic scenes last year at the final of the Copa America between Argentina and Colombia where fans broke into the ground after long delays to enter. But there was an efficient filter system set up for ticket and security checks well away from the stadium perimeter and there were no signs of any problems. Nor was there any indication of the controversial crackdown on illegal immigrants from US President Donald Trump's administration having any impact on the game in the heavily Hispanic South Florida community. While there were no goals to celebrate, the game was far from boring with Al Ahly enjoying the better of the first half before Miami improved significantly after the break. Messi went close in the 64th minute with a free kick which grazed the post before hitting the side-netting, tricking part of the crowd into thinking he had scored. He nearly did in stoppage time, after a well-worked short-corner but the outstretched finger tip of El Shenawy was to deny him. Miami face Porto in Atlanta on June 19 before returning home to face Brazil's Palmeiras on June 23. Al Ahly's Spanish coach Jose Riveiro, who only took charge of the team for this tournament, said his team should have finished the game off in the first half. 'It's a game of mistakes. We had a decent amount of chances in the first half to put the game in a different space,' he said before praising the team's fans. 'It was like we were playing in Cairo and that was a surprise for me in my first official match with Al Ahly. To be here in the States and have it like you were playing at home is something that can probably only happen in this club.' Last-gasp goal sees Mamelodi Sundowns beat Al Ahly, reach CAF Champions League final
Matshelane Mamabolo | Published 2 hours ago THE dream of the second star lives on! Mamelodi Sundowns are going to play the ultimate match of African football's premier club knockout competition – the CAF Champions League – courtesy of an away-goals aggregate victory over Al Ahly in Cairo on Friday night you would not associate with the aristocrats of South African football. The Brazilians ground out this success, the 2016 African champions progressing via the away-goals rule thanks to an own goal by Yasser Ibrahim, which saw the second leg of the semi-final end 1-1 after 90 minutes and on aggregate. They were celebrating it like they had scored it themselves, though, substitute Iqraam Rayners running wildly after his shot had deflected off the Ahly defender to beat Mohamed El Shenawy. The Cairo Stadium was reverberating to chants and bounces by the partisan 75 000-strong Red Devils supporters, who'd played the role of 12th man so excellently throughout, when disaster struck for the record 12-time champions. A desperate last-ditch, yet innocuous-looking attack by Sundowns seemed set to peter out like the many before it when Rayners took what appeared a hopeful shot. El Shenawy looked well-positioned to deal with it, but the ball ricocheted off Ibrahim's shin into the net. And like that, the outcome of the match changed – Sundowns literally pick-pocketed the Egyptian giants, whose bench and fans were already in celebratory mood. Ahly had taken the lead via a goal worthy of taking them to the final midway through the first half – Tahier Mohamed smashing the ball past Ronwen Williams from close range after being sent through by Ashour. Sundowns had lost possession in the Ahly half, and Ashour quickly released Mohamed, who waited for no second invitation as he smashed the ball first time past Williams, who clearly expected the shot to go to the far-end of the posts. Then deep into the second half, the Cairo Stadium went into a hush as the referee was called to consult VAR for what appeared to be a foul on Lucas Ribeiro inside the box. The referee had waved it away, and bravely did the same even after consulting the monitors. Cue huge delight in the packed stadium, but there was no such later on when Ibrahim stuck the arrow home to send Sundowns to their third ever final, the South Africans having been there in 2001 when they lost to the self same Ahly and then in 2016, when they became champions at the expense of Zamalek – the other top Egyptian side. Sundowns were the first to ask questions on six minutes, Lucas Ribeiro Costa setting up Tashreeq Matthews. But the attacker, who was playing as a false nine with Peter Shalulile on the bench, sent his shot across the face of goal – hardly troubling El Shenawy. The Brazilian again created a chance for Matthews on 28 minutes, but the latter was beaten to the ball by a fast-thinking Ahly defender, who cleared the danger. Ahly had threatened on the quarter-hour mark as Sundowns carelessly gave the ball away in the middle, but Marawan Ghalab shot wide. Their Slovenian striker Nejc Gradisar should have put them 1-0 up following a free-kick which fell kindly to him tight in front of Williams, but he hoofed the ball over. On 33 minutes, Ahly caught Sundowns on the same side where the goal came from, but Williams did well to pull off a good save, blocking Ashour's low shot at the post. Ribeiro had two successive chances on 50 and 52 minutes, but he fluffed both as it looked like this was just not going to be Sundowns' night. The final whistle loomed large, and another semi-final exit appeared imminent when Ibrahim redirected Rayners' shot past El Shenawy to give Sundowns the chance at a second continental triumph.

Ahly have been drawn in Group A alongside Brazil's Palmeiras, Portugal's FC Porto, and Major League Soccer's Inter Miami. "Being African champions is a huge achievement.
