Baton Rouge cancer center expands partnership to bring cutting-edge treatment to patients
BATON ROUGE, La. (Louisiana First) — Cancer patients in Louisiana will soon have access to even more advanced radiation treatments, thanks to an expanded partnership between Mary Bird Perkins Cancer Center and Elekta, a global leader in precision radiation therapy. This month, Mary Bird Perkins held the North America Elekta Unity Users Meeting. Medical physicists, radiation therapists, and oncologists from across the globe joined the event. Guests explored the modern facility on Essen Lane. They learned about new advancements in cancer treatment. 'This global company is selective when choosing their partners because this technology doesn't work on its own. Elekta knows that Mary Bird Perkins punches far above its weight with its ability to usher in new technology,' MBPCC Chief of Physics Charles Smith said. HHS staff working on childhood lead exposure and cancer clusters fired Mary Bird Perkins continues to lead the way in cancer care, using some of Elekta's most advanced technologies: Elekta Versa HD – One of the first 10 U.S. facilities to offer this technology, which allows for faster treatments and more patients treated per day. Elekta Harmony – In November 2024, Mary Bird Perkins was the first U.S. facility to use this system. It cut wait times and kept treatment precise. Elekta Unity – This system uses MRI to guide radiation therapy. It lets doctors see tumors in real-time, giving each patient personalized treatment. Over 100 patients have already benefited, according to Mary Bird Perkins.
