Eduan, Simbine shine at world relays

Canada's Eliezer Adjibi reacts as he crosses the finish line in the mixed 4x100m relay final of the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China's Guangdong province, on May 11. PHOTO: AFP Success Eduan lived up to her name by anchoring Britain to a thrilling victory in the 4x100m at the world relays in Guangzhou on Sunday as Akani Simbine led South Africa to victory in the men's event. Eduan produced a thrilling final leg to outpace Jamaica's Shericka Jackson and Twanisha Terry of the United States for gold along with teammates Nia Wedderburn-Goodison, Amy Hunt and Bianca Williams. Spain snatched a shock silver in 42.28sec, with the Jamaican quartet also featuring multi-medalled Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce taking bronze (42.33), just five-hundredths ahead of the US team. South Africa had in-form Simbine, winner of the two opening Diamond League 100m races this season, to thank for an electric anchor leg as he powered past Brandon Hicklin for gold in the men's 4x100m relay. The team also featuring Bayanda Walaza, Sinesipho Dambile and Bradley Nkoana clocked a world leading time of 37.61sec. The US took silver in 37.66sec, with Canada, featuring the same quartet who won gold in last year's Paris Olympics, claiming bronze. There was another upset in the women's 4x400m relay, with Spain pushing the US team, the defending Olympic champions, into second. Spanish anchor leg Blanca Hervas was overtaken on the final lap but she held her nerve to slowly reel back in a flagging Bailey Lear. Paula Sevilla ran the first leg for Spain, just minutes after taking part in the 4x100m relay, Eva Santidrian and Daniela Fra completing the winning line-up as they timed 3:24.13. The US took silver in 3:24.72 with South Africa rounding out the podium in 3:24.84. The South Africans brought two days of competition -- which also served as qualifiers for the world athletics championships in Tokyo in September -- to an end with gold in the men's 4x400m relay. The quartet of Gardeo Isaacs, Udeme Okon, Leendert Koekemoer and Zakithi Nene raced home in 2:57.50. Alexander Doom produced his trademark late push to guarantee silver for Belgium in 2:58.19, with Botswana taking bronze (2:58.27). The US foursome of Chris Robinson, Courtney Okolo, Johnnie Blockburger and Lynna Irby-Jackson earlier claimed gold in the mixed 4x400m relay in a championship record of 3:09.54. And the Canadian quartet of Sade McCreath, Marie-Eloise Leclair, Duan Asemota and Eliezer Adjibi topped the podium ahead of Jamaica and Britain in the mixed 4x100m relay, winning in 40.30sec.

Canada wins gold, bronze to end World Relays and clinches another spot at athletics worlds

Canada's mixed team of 100-metre sprinters will not join its men's and women's counterparts at the World Athletics Championships in September but was the lone foursome to claim victory on the final day at the World Athletics Relays in Guangzhou, China. Sade McCreath, Marie-Eloise Leclair, Duan Asemota and Eliezer Adjibi prevailed in a season-best 40.30 seconds over Jamaica on Sunday at Guangdong Olympic Stadium. However, they won't be competing at the Sept. 13-21 athletics worlds in Tokyo as the event will not be contested there. After going 40.90 in the event's debut on Saturday in China to book a spot in the final, they shaved over a half-second off that performance on Sunday to hold off the Jamaicans (40.44) and Great Britain (40.88). It was the best effort of 2025 for all three squads. WATCH | Canada achieves season-best time in mixed 4x100m final: Canada's 4x100 team, the reigning Olympic champions, lost precious time when the exchange between starter Aaron Brown and Jerome Blake wasn't clean. Undeterred, Blake, Brendon Rodney and anchor Andre De Grasse persevered and reached the medal podium, earning bronze behind South Africa and the United States. The Canadian foursome that won Olympic gold last summer in Paris with a 37.50 clocking went 38.11 on Sunday. They ran 37.89 a year ago to capture world relay silver in Nassau, Bahamas. WATCH | Canadians reach men's 100m relay podium with bronze: Canada was second in its heat on Saturday to qualify for Sunday's final but more importantly secure a spot at the world championships. The automatic qualification was in doubt until De Grasse lifted his team in the anchor leg. The Markham, Ont., native held off Australia and the Netherlands to cross the line in 38.15 behind Japan (37.84). Canada's 4x400 mixed team of Austin Cole, Lauren Gale, Nathan George and Zoe Sherar will compete at worlds after taking nearly 10 seconds off their season best from Saturday and stopping the clock in three minutes 12.95 seconds in the second round of qualifying on Sunday. WATCH | Canada books spot at world championships in mixed 4x400m: They needed a top-three finish to advance and placed third, holding off India by almost two seconds (3:14.81) in the second of two heats. Cole, Gale, George and Sherar were the last of six teams in the third and final heat on Saturday in 3:22.37. The Canadian women's 4x100 team of Jacqueline Madogo, Audrey Leduc, McCreath and Leclair was fifth in Sunday's final in a national record 42.46. Canada was in fourth in its Saturday heat when Leduc took the baton and powered past the Italian and Dutch runners to secure a second-place finish (43.11) and clinch a berth at worlds. Canada crowned inaugural mixed 4x100m relay champions

GUANGZHOU :Canada produced a sublime display in ideal sprinting conditions to outclass Jamaica and Britain en route to the inaugural mixed 4x100 metres relay gold on the final day of the World Athletics Relays on Sunday. After setting the pace during the heats on a soggy Saturday in Guangzhou, where the event made its debut on the global stage, the Canadian quartet powered out of the blocks in the final and crossed the finish line in a season's best 40.30 seconds. Strong runs by Sade McCreath, Marie-Eloise Leclair and Duan Asemota set up anchor Eliezer Adjibi to show his explosive pace in the final stretch, ensuring Canada left the southern Chinese city with the fastest time over two days of competition. "I think this is a test and it shows how hard we work," an elated Asemota said. "We had been to the relay camp, we all sacrificed so many weeks of the year to get this relay right. We showed it on the track and with this medal. We did it." With pre-event favourites the United States absent from the final after fumbling their baton exchange in the heats, Jamaica took second in 40.44 seconds while Britain were third ahead of Australia, Italy and France, in 40.88 seconds. The Americans defended their mixed 4x400m title and put down a marker before the world championships in Tokyo in September by winning with a championship-record time of 3:09.54, finishing in front of Australia and Kenya. Akani Simbine came up with a late burst of speed to anchor South Africa to victory in the men's 4x100m event, ensuring his team edged out the U.S. and Canada with a world-leading effort of 37.61 seconds. There was more drama earlier as Jamaica's men's 4x100m team failed to book a place in Tokyo when a hamstring injury to Julian Forte in their second qualifying attempt proved costly, after they botched their baton exchange during Saturday's heat. It was smooth sailing for a relatively inexperienced British team with Nia Wedderburn-Goodison, Amy Hunt, Bianca Williams and Success Eduan staving off Jamaica and the U.S to win the women's 4x100m race in 42.21 seconds, ahead of surprise package Spain who took second. The Spanish 4x400m women's team stunned defending champions and Paris gold medallists the U.S. with a time of 3:24.13, while South Africa sparkled in the men's event with a world-leading time of 2:57.50.
