Sabah family in Beijing keeps Kaamatan spirit alive
Elisa, Alexzender and Katama. KOTA KINABALU (June 1): As Malaysians across the globe come together to celebrate the 2025 Kaamatan Festival, one Malaysian family living thousands of kilometres away in China is sending a heartfelt message back home, a tribute to their roots and cultural pride. Elisa Marie Ungkiu Singgon, her husband Alexzender Roy Dusin, and their young son, Katama Jireh Gingging, born in Beijing nearly two years ago, are currently based at the Embassy of Malaysia in Beijing. Despite the distance, the family extended warm Kaamatan greetings to fellow Malaysians, especially their loved ones in Bingkor (Keningau) and Kitapol (Kiulu, Tuaran), Sabah. 'Though we are far from home, the spirit of Kaamatan continues to live in us,' Elisa shared. 'Kaamatan is more than a harvest celebration, it is a time for reflection, gratitude, and staying connected to our heritage. It is how we bridge the gap between where we are and where we come from,' the couple said. Living abroad, they said, has only deepened their appreciation for Sabah's rich cultural traditions and close-knit family ties. The festival reminds them of the enduring importance of ancestral heritage in shaping identity and fostering unity across diverse communities. 'Kaamatan unites us, wherever we are,' added Alexzender. 'We're raising Katama Jireh to know his roots, as a son of Sabah and a Malaysian, even while growing up in a different part of the world,' he said. The couple also emphasized that the values of Kaamatan, gratitude, unity, and shared humanity hold universal meaning, and are worth sharing across cultures and borders. The Verdict Movie Review: Sruthi Hariharan shines in a courtroom drama that fails to deliver
When Elisa (Suhasini Mani Ratnam), a billionaire, is found dead, Namrutha (Sruthi Hariharan), her close friend and well-wisher, is accused of cutting off her oxygen supply and murdering her. The motive? Namrutha was recently added to Elisa's will and stood to inherit a staggering $150 billion. The Verdict follows Maya (Varalaxmi Sarathkumar) as she takes on the case, determined to prove Namrutha's innocence and unmask the real killer. Set in Texas, USA, the film opens with Elisa's murder and swiftly moves to the courtroom, where a jury is weighing the evidence and arguments to decide whether Namrutha is guilty or innocent. While most jury members lean towards acquittal, one juror, played by Vidyulekha Raman, asks a pointed, 'Why?' Her initial belief in Namrutha's guilt suggests she might crack open a Pandora's box of secrets. Instead, she merely rehashes the court proceedings, which feels more like a procedural snooze than a tense cross-examination. Even the interval twist, a moment ripe with potential, is reduced to a convenient reveal. With an idea that has immense potential for exploration, The Verdict stands accused of poor execution. The director opts for a non-linear narrative, perhaps to let us play jury. Each witness takes the stand to recount Namrutha's ties with Elisa, her marriage with Varun (Prakash Mohandas), the involvement of the butler Rafael in the murder, and a host of other aspects. Much of the first half is spent in exposition, which culminates in a reveal at the interval point. You would expect Namrutha's road to justice to be long, winding, and riddled with twists. But surprisingly, the titular verdict is delivered rather early in the second half. What follows feels like a different film altogether; one that wanders off the legal path and into narrative no man's land. Up until the verdict, the film keeps its spotlight firmly on the case, and then it abruptly shifts its entire focus to the killer. Suddenly, the legal drama turns into a mystery thriller. With the killer being the main focus and their motive laid bare from the get-go, the second half limps toward a predictable conclusion. And just when you think the film might have a final ace up its sleeve, it reveals that Namrutha knew the killer's identity all along. She claims to have stayed silent because all the evidence pointed to her, so she chose to play along and face the charges. The logic behind it is shakier than a witness on cross-examination. To make matters more convenient, the investigation that follows hands Maya and Namrutha one lucky break after another, with evidence and clues falling into their laps.

Elisa Spadvecchia, 66, was crushed so horrifically that the lifeguard who witnessed the incident became so ill that he had to be hospitalised. The retired teacher had been on holiday with her ex-husband, Giovanni Sfregola, in the Italian seaside town of Pinarella di Cervia, near Bologna. The victim's ex-husband sounded the alarm when he noticed she had not returned from her walk. He used Find My iPhone to see where she was and said he is now in an "ocean of pain" after her death. Police arrested the bulldozer driver Lerry Gnoli, 54, and are investigating why he was on the beach in the first place - he has been charged with manslaughter. Gnoli told authorities he was allegedly authorised to carry out "works on the beach". Despite this, it was reported he had been using the machine without the correct license. The victim's ex-husband recalled what happened that tragic day to local Italian media, saying: "My wife went for her walk carrying only her phone. When it happened, she had nothing on her that could identify her. "Not seeing her come back, I started calling her, but she didn't answer. So I used 'Find My iPhone' to locate her phone. Once I found it, I got someone to take me to the exact spot where, sadly, I found my wife. "They didn't let me see her, but they told me that even the lifeguard who witnessed the scene fell ill and ended up in hospital." The former policeman said they had been celebrating the birth of their three-month-old grandchild, which they shared, before this tragedy. He added: "We were over the moon since my daughter's child was born. He's not even three months old yet. "Now, for us, it's just an ocean of pain. Something devastating that consumes you inside because you can't come to terms with it." A flood of emotional tributes were made to the beloved retired English teacher. Elisa's former colleague and friend, Donatella Lovison, said: "I couldn't believe it, hearing her name spoken! I remember all the fruitful moments of study and research spent together. I hope she gets justice!" Another old colleague, Cinzia Zanesco, said she was particularly heartbroken as she knew Elisa was "enjoying this phase of life" as a grandparent. She said: "It's crazy that she was killed in this way, it doesn't make sense. From one day to the next, from one moment to the next your life can change and everything can disappear. We have to realise this." Gnoli's lawyer, Vittoria Manes' said his client was "terribly sorry" and called the death a "huge tragedy". He said: "She was one of the first to introduce the use of IT at school and her end-of-year sweets were legendary. He can't understand how it could have happened and sends his condolences to the woman's family."
