Copy of 1909 art journal on view at city exhibition

THE Paper Chase was an art journal produced by Elizabeth Forbes (1859-1912) and Fryn Tennyson Jesse (1888-1958), a great-niece of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. Forbes and Tennyson Jesse met at Newlyn Art School, Cornwall, where they were a teacher and student respectively. They developed a close bond and Elizabeth encouraged Fryn's writing as much as her art. They planned for The Paper Chase to be a monthly publication but in the end only two lavishly-illustrated editions were made in 1908 and 1909. It features poems, articles and an interview with Norman Garstin, an Irish artist, teacher, art critic and journalist. He moved to Cornwall in 1895 and stayed in the area until his death in 1926. Garstin was a great friend of Elizabeth and Stanhope Forbes. Although Tennyson Jesse later recalled 'nothing I wrote for it was any good', the journal proved popular. She went on to write several influential criminology books and novels and became one of the first female war correspondents. A Marriage of Art explores the Forbes' role in the development of British impressionism and the establishment of Newlyn as a magnet for both new and reputable artists. They took full advantage of the fantastic light, cheap living and the availability of inexpensive models. See the exhibition at Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum, Foregate Street, until Sunday, June 29. Tickets are required for this exhibition and can be purchased online or from the museum shop when visiting. The rest of the art gallery and museum is free to visit as usual. Plan your visit at
