Matildas star Ellie Carpenter has tied the knot with her teammate Daniëlle van de Donk in a breathtaking ceremony that came almost 18 months after they got engaged. The 25-year-old met the love of her life as they both played for top French side Lyon and the Aussie revealed their nuptials in a post to Instagram on Wednesday night. Carpenter treated her followers to two photos of the wedding, which was held at a mansion in France, along with the caption 'I choose you. I will always choose you.' The post drew heartfelt messages from her Matildas teammates Emily van Egmond, Emily Gielnik, Kyra Cooney-Cross, Steph Catley and Charli Grant. Another Matildas star, Teagan Micah, was part of the wedding party. Van de donk's gown was made by leading bridal brand Pronovias, while Carpenter's gown - which featured a veil - was created by Collingwood-based custom dress maker Mia Ateliers, with the soccer star describing it as 'the dress of my dreams'. 'The setting is so lush and green, it's beautiful,' Carpenter told Vogue. 'It's got this unique, elegant vibe but still feels grounded in love and who we are as a couple. Intimate, natural, and full of heart.' The couple met while playing internationally and really got to know each other when van de Donk joined Lyon in 2021. They first went public with their romance in 2023 and announced their engagement on New Year's Day last year. The Matildas defender shared the news to Instagram alongside a loved-up photo of the couple taken in front of a stunning ocean vista in the Maldives. In the image, Ellie is seen embracing her fiancée as she flashes her stunning engagement ring. Danielle captioned the touching frame with some tender words. 'My person for life,' she wrote, adding a red love heart and ring emoji. That announcement came after Carpenter spoke out about the cruel abuse she received from online trolls following the Matildas' loss to England in the Women's World Cup semi-final on home soil. She was forced to turn off the comments on her Instagram account after an unfortunate mistake in the 71st minute of the match that proved costly in Australia's eventual 3-1 defeat. Carpenter was given time off by the Matildas for her nuptials and was not in camp when the side's new coach Joe Montemurro addressed the squad for the first time late last month.

The pair shared two photos from the magical day, with the ceremony believed to be held at a château in France over the weekend. Carpenter, 25, was granted personal leave from the past Matildas window to prepare for the wedding. 'I choose you, I will always choose you,' Carpenter wrote alongside the two images. Carpenter donned a veil while van de Donk's dress had a stunning lace front. Teammates were quick to share their congratulations. Steph Catley wrote 'Stunning, what a day'. Micah commented 'the most beautiful brides'. Emily Gielnik wrote 'holy smokes you two are absolutely stunning. Best day ever. Love you both so much.' Carpenter isn't the only Matilda to tie the knot this month. Midfielder Katrina Gorry is due to marry her partner Clare Markstedt this weekend in Australia.

Photograph: Kirsty Wigglesworth/AP Football Australia is set to announce Joe Montemurro as new Matildas coach, ending 10 months of uncertainty with the appointment of the widely respected Melbourne-born women's football specialist ahead of next year's home Asian Cup. The 55-year-old has won trophies with Arsenal, Juventus and Lyon in a distinguished career in Europe, having broken through in the professional coaching ranks with stints at Melbourne Victory and Melbourne City in the W-League more than a decade ago. Montemurro had signed at Lyon for two years at the start of last season, and his early exit needed to be negotiated for him to take control of the Matildas. His Lyon side – featuring Matildas fullback Ellie Carpenter – won the league without losing a match, but his impressive campaign was tarnished by a semi-final loss in the Champions League to his former club Arsenal, including Australian Steph Catley, Caitlin Foord and Kyra Cooney-Cross. The Australian coach worked with Catley and Foord during in his time at Arsenal. The appointment of Montemurro ends almost a year of uncertainty following the departure of Gustavsson, whose final game in charge of the Matildas was a 2-1 defeat to the USA at the Paris Olympics that ended Australia's disappointing campaign. The Asian Cup gets underway in March 2026, leaving Montemurro with only a short period to affect the side. Injured captain Sam Kerr is yet to return for Chelsea, almost 18 months since she suffered an ACL injury, and playmaker Mary Fowler is in doubt for the Asian Cup with her own knee injury.

Matildas' Grant motivated by 2024 Paris Olympics snub
Driven by the heartbreak of missing Olympics selection and her most challenging year in football yet, Matildas defender Charli Grant is ready to make up for lost time. The dashing full-back had been a mainstay of previous Matildas squads but was left out of Australia's 18-player squad for last year's Paris Games. Though she travelled as a reserve player, Grant did not take the field. "It was heartbreaking to not be put in that squad," Grant said. "But in saying that I still feel very grateful to have been part of that whole squad together, to be travelling with the team and to be part of that experience. "But it was really hard to be so close but so far away from that team, especially after feeling like I had cemented a spot maybe the year prior." Grant, 23, is stuck behind two of Australia's greatest fullbacks, Steph Catley and Ellie Carpenter, but has consistently deputised with aplomb. Carpenter is missing upcoming internationals against Argentina for personal reasons, while Catley — who is also spending more time at centre-back — is likely to have limited involvement in Friday's clash at Docklands. Grant is ready to step up, especially with Joe Montemurro expected to be announced as Australia's next coach after the international window. "It's definitely a good opportunity for us to cement a spot in our position and show that we want to be part of that team with the new coach," she said. Nine months out from the Asian Cup, Grant is not lacking motivation. "When you do miss out on things, it just gives you that fire and that drive to prove them wrong, and to show that you are capable, and that you do deserve that opportunity," she said. "In a way, you've just got to turn it into a positive and just use it as energy to make yourself better. "All the tournaments I've been a part of, I've fallen short in the goals I've set for myself in the game time that I wanted. "This Asian Cup I'll definitely be working towards trying to just be part of the squad. But to break into that starting line-up, that is a goal of mine." AAP
