Historic Savannah Foundation first endangered places list
SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — It's the first day of National Preservation Month and the Historic Savannah Foundation released a list of endangered places that they want to bring awareness to and encourage community involvement in preservation efforts.
They are places many of us drive by or even walk by on a daily basis, but most don't know the history. This is the Isaiah Davenport house, and it's one of six places listed on the Historic Savannah Foundation's inaugural list of endangered places.
Cemeteries, churches, houses and even a fire station were all on the HSF endangered places list.
'This is going to be a super local initiative that highlights properties, both sites and buildings that are considered neglected, threatened in some kind of way,' said Director of Preservation and Historic Properties HSF Ellie Isaacs.
The six places on the list all have significant history surrounding them. Most aren't in the best condition, which is why the list was created to not only bring awareness, but also advocacy from community members.

'It's really important to highlight these places because so many of them get lost and we don't know what their stories are until it's almost too late or it is too late,' Isaacs said. 'So, we really want to highlight them too, to be able to tell underrepresented stories in Savannah. So, it's not just, oh, that's a nice building on the corner. It's like, what is that building's story.'
Ellie Isaacs said the community's response has been amazing, and she can't wait to see what new history they uncover.
'People reaching out saying, oh, I drove by the building every day and I never knew that's what that history was, or, oh, I drive down that road and never knew that that was sitting back there, you know, that kind of thing, and then there's also been people commenting like, oh, I lived here in, you know, this year and this year. So that's been really cool to see that, you know, people recognize these places,' said Isaacs.
Community members have nominated all of the places on the list.
