Stellar Human expands to new downtown Binghamton location
BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A local clothing store owner is hoping that his expansion can serve as inspiration to others who may be trying to overcome difficult challenges.
LaRue Simmons, owner of Stellar Human, was joined by Binghamton Mayor Jared Kraham and representatives of the Greater Binghamton Chamber today to cut the ribbon on the store's new location.
The vintage clothing store has moved into one half of the former Ellis Brothers Furniture storefront in the Courtyard section of Washington Street.
Simmons first opened the store on Robinson Street four years ago. He says that by moving downtown, he hopes to increase his visibility and that he has already seen increased foot traffic since opening last month.
Simmons, who grew up in Johnson City and graduated from Seton Catholic, says he battled alcoholism and addiction for many years, but has now been sober for 7 years.
'Through sobriety, I've learned so much and gained so much with this being one of the biggest things. One of my biggest goals is for others to see, who might be struggling with the same kind of issues, to know that it is possible to not just recover, but to go above and beyond,' said Simmons.
Simmons also plans to host events at the store by moving all of the clothing racks into storage.
Last weekend, there was a musical performance and this Friday there will be a comedy show at 7.
Store hours are Monday through Wednesday from noon until 6 and Thursday through Sunday noon until 8.
