Elton John Ties Bruce Springsteen With His New Album

Elton John scores his twenty-second top 10 album on the Billboard 200 with Who Believes in Angels?, ... More tying Bruce Springsteen's record. LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 10: Elton John attends the Elton John: Never Too Late European debut as part of the London Film Festival at Southbank Centre - Royal Festival Hall on October 10, 2024 in London, England. (Photo by Tim P. Whitby/Getty Images for Disney) Elton John scores another big album in the United States this week, and he has someone to celebrate his latest win with. The musical legend appears inside the top 10 on the Billboard 200 again with Who Believes In Angels?, his collaborative new full-length with Brandi Carlile. This latest set isn't just any other, average success, though. As the project debuts, it helps him tie with one of rock's most celebrated names and pull ahead of a few others he's been matched with for years. Who Believes in Angels? opens at No. 9 on this week's Billboard 200, the ranking that shows which albums the American public is consuming. It opens with 40,000 equivalent units shifted in its first frame, and, according to Luminate, nearly all of those units — 36,500 to be exact — are pure sales. That's just enough to place it inside the top 10, which is important to the piano player. Thanks to Who Believes in Angels?, John now claims 22 top 10 albums on the Billboard 200. As he adds one more to his growing track record of huge successes, he matches with Bruce Springsteen for the eighth-most appearances inside the uppermost region on the chart in U.S. history. Before this new project arrived, John was steady with 21 top 10s on the Billboard 200, which at which point he was matched with both George Strait and Paul McCartney — whose solo output is also combined with Wings, according to Billboard. This ranking could change again, though, as both of those stars are still working and releasing new music, and they still claim sizable fanbases. Even with his new bestseller, John still has a long way to go before he matches the all-time record holders. The Rolling Stones continue to lead the pack, with 38 top 10 albums. That number grew only recently, with the band's Hackney Diamonds dropping a little more than a year ago. Barbra Streisand claims the second-most top 10s of all time with 34, while Frank Sinatra and The Beatles follow with 33 and 32, respectively.

Elton John says he 'can't see' sons play sports or read after vision loss from eye infection

Elton John shared an emotional health update months after he revealed that he had suffered partial vision loss due to a "severe" eye infection. During an interview with the Times of London, the 78-year-old music icon spoke out candidly about the pain of losing his eyesight and how it has impacted his life. ""I can't read. I can't see my boys playing rugby and soccer, and it has been a very stressful time because I'm used to soaking it all up," the father of two said. "It's distressing." John and his husband, David Furnish, who married in 2014, share sons Zachary, 14, and Elijah, 12. The pair welcomed Zachary, who was born via surrogate in December 2010. In January 2013, John and Furnish became parents to Elijah, who was born via the same surrogate. While speaking with the Times, the U.K. native shared that he "can't see the telly," adding that he has not "been able to see anything since last July." "You get emotional, but you have to get used to it because I'm lucky to have the life I have," John said. "I still have my wonderful family, and I can still see something out of here," he continued, pointing to his left eye. "So you say to yourself, just get on with it." The "Rocket Man" hitmaker first revealed his health struggles in September. "Over the summer, I've been dealing with a severe eye infection that has unfortunately left me with only limited vision in one eye," he shared on social media. "I am healing, but it's an extremely slow process and it will take some time before sight returns to the impacted eye." The singer added: "I have been quietly spending the summer recuperating at home, and am feeling positive about the progress I have made in my healing and recovery thus far." During a November interview with "Good Morning America." John revealed that he contracted the infection over the summer in the South of France. "It's been four months now since I haven't been able to see, and my left eye is not the greatest," he said. "There's hope and encouragement that it'll be OK, but I'm kind of stuck at the moment because I can do something like this, but going into the studio and recording, I don't know," John explained, revealing he can't read lyrics. "It kind of floored me," he later added. "I can't see anything. I can't read anything, I can't watch anything." On Friday, John released his new album with Brandi Carlile, titled "Who Believes in Angels?" The "Hold Me Closer" singer and Carlile collaborated on the album with record producer Andrew Watt and John's longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin. The quartet recorded "Who Believes in Angels?" over just 20 days between mid-October and early November 2023. In the documentary "Elton John: Never Too Late," which premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival last September, the singer discussed the concerns that Zachary and Elijah have about his "mortality." "They think about my mortality. They worry about my mortality," he expressed in the documentary. "Not so much David, but me," he added. The five-time Grammy Award winner said he shares a close bond with his two sons and that they "love their daddy" and want nothing more than for him "to be around forever." John's children are not the only ones who worry about him being around for the monumental moments of their lives. The singer said he "would love to be around forever," but he is aware that won't be the case. "I want to see them have children and get married. I don't think I'm going to be around for that. Who knows? You never know. So that's why I want to use the best time – the best of my time – while I'm around," he added. "Time together is so wonderful and so precious."

Music Review: Elton John and Brandi Carlile's collaboration deepens on 'Who Believes in Angels?'

NEW YORK (AP) — It started with a movie. Country star Brandi Carlile, so moved after watching a rough cut of the 2024 music documentary 'Elton John: Never Too Late,' began writing a song inspired by John's incredible career. Titled 'Never Too Late,' it became the title track for the film and a collaboration with John, producer Andrew Watt and John's longtime lyricist Bernie Taupin. 'This song was about my life,' John told The Associated Press earlier this year. "I've been through hell ... and I still come out fighting (on) the other side. So, you know, it's very true to what I am.' 'Never Too Late' was shortlisted for the 2025 Oscars. It didn't win, but that's no matter. Now it is featured on a new, full album's worth of collaborations between John and Carlile, called 'Who Believes In Angels?' The introductory anthem, 'The Rose of Laura Nyro,' suggests this might be a Carlile-does-John record, largely ornamented with call-and-response harmonies from the man himself, instead of something approximating a true partnership. That concern is quickly shed by the swinging rock 'n' roll of track two, 'Little Richard's Bible,' lead by John. A pattern is established: The duo takes turns with the reigns. Still, Carlile's voice often emerges the loudest. Power ballads, shockingly, are kept to a minimum. The best example is likely the title track, written by Carlile about her lifelong admiration-turned-long term friendship with John. Positivity is in no short supply. 'A Little Light' was written by Carlile the day that Israel invaded Gaza; it serves as a rallying cry to bring the world together. The midtempo 'Someone to Belong To' mirrors 'Never Too Late,' in some ways, as the pair harmonize its optimistic message: 'Hang in there, darling, won't you? / The best is yet to come,' they duet. 'I thank my lucky stars / That I've got someone / Someone to belong to.' Closer "When This Old World is Done with Me" is a peak-John piano ballad, a timeless offering that begs the question: Will the world ever see a new solo record from the pop hero again? Much like 'Never Too Late,' Taupin and Carlile both contributed lyrics, and Watt produced 'Who Believes In Angels?' It was recorded in Los Angeles' Sunset Sound Studios in October 2023, written and recorded in just 20 days, backed by all-star musicians: Red Hot Chili Peppers' drummer Chad Smith, bassist Pino Palladino (who performs with Nine Inch Nails), and keyboardist Josh Klinghoffer (Pearl Jam, Beck). Despite its expedition, the album is a full collection. It directly reflects a deepening collaborative relationship between John and Carlile, perhaps not unlike the one the country singer established with Joni Mitchell recently, getting the folk icon back on stage. (What other musical heroes should get back in the studio? Give Carlile a call!) It is only natural for fans to leave wanting to hear more John. But in whole, "Who Believes In Angels?' is full of life — and it is a joy to hear an energetic John just a few years after he embarked on his farewell tour.
