Kauaʻi officials urge public to prepare for hurricane season

KAUAI, Hawaii (KHON2) — The Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency is urging residents of the islands to prepare for the upcoming hurricane season, which begins on June 1 and runs until Nov. 30. According to the National Weather Service, the 2025 outlook for the season calls for one to four tropical cyclones, creating a near-to-below-average season. The prediction is for the entire central Pacific region and does not predict how many storms will directly affect the Hawaiian islands. Hurricane season is approaching. These tips can save your family The average hurricane season consists of four to five storms, which include tropical depressions and storms, as well as hurricanes, KEMA said. Despite the near-to-below-average season, officials said it is always best to be prepared for the worst. 'During a tropical cyclone, being prepared is vital for you and your family. If it's safe, staying at home is often the best choice,' Kauaʻi Emergency Management Agency Administrator Elton Ushio said. 'Even though this year's forecast suggests a near-to-below-average season, it remains essential to prepare your emergency kits as soon as possible.'According to Ushio, disaster kits need to include at least two weeks' worth of non-perishable food, a gallon of water per person per day, a battery-powered radio, a flashlight, prescription medicines and other items specific to individual needs. The Central Pacific Hurricane Center will issue storm watches when hurricanes or tropical storm-force winds are possible within 48 hours, and warnings are issued when the winds are expected within 36 hours.
