RNC Chair stresses importance of local elections at Lincoln Day Dinner

EAST PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — Hundreds gathered at the Embassy Suites in East Peoria on Thursday for the Lincoln Day Dinner, one of the largest events in Illinois Republican politics. It was hosted by the Peoria and Tazewell County Republican parties and has attracted big names in the past such as Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis and Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. Republican National Committee Chair Michael Whatley took center stage as the keynote speaker, focusing his speech on the work of President Donald Trump as well as the importance of local elections. He emphasized the importance of Republican voters making their voices heard at the ballot box, from voting in mayoral races to city council races. Whatley pointed out the board of education as a particularly salient entity as well. 'The most important races that we deal with in an election cycle, in terms of your family and every family, are what happens on the school boards,' he said. He also referred to the Trump administration as the most effective one he's seen in the past 30-40 years, and that the reason Trump was able to win in November was due to the 'disciplined' messaging of his campaign. What made Trump's 2024 candidacy so effective, according to Whatley, is that he was able to appeal to all sorts of people by sticking to a simple message. Most people want a strong economy and to feel safe, and he thinks they were allured to vote Republican as a result. He also pointed to Trump giving speeches in bigger cities and speaking to minority media outlets as more reasons for why he won in November. While he said 'it's not easy' being a Republican in Illinois, Whatley said the formula for turning things around is simple. 'Great candidates running great races, getting out to vote, and protecting the ballot,' Whatley said. On that last point, Whatley said voter integrity is paramount. He believes an expected red wave did not happen in 2022 because some people did not think their ballot would be counted in a fair manner. Whatley says a message has been sent to Democrats in more recent elections that prosecution will result if any voter fraud takes place. Whatley was introduced by U.S. Rep. Darin LaHood, who lauded the job Trump has done since taking office. From increased military recruitment to decreased southern border crossings, LaHood sees the country as in a great place under Republican leadership. Peoria and Tazewell County Republican Party Chairs Chuck Weaver and Jim Rule also spoke at the event, focusing on the importance of getting the message out into the community in order to win elections. Rule said that Illinois is in need of a 'significant culture change' while Weaver pointed to those such as newly elected Peoria City Councilman Alex Carmona as political leaders that could help turn the tide of Illinois politics in a more conservative direction. NC congressman says ‘belligerent' man called police to hotel after his speech

Police responded Saturday evening to a disturbance at a hotel in downtown Asheville where Rep. Chuck Edwards was present. Edwards, 64, a Republican from Flat Rock, is serving in his second term in Congress, representing North Carolina's furthest southwestern counties. 'I can confirm we are investigating a report of a disturbance that occurred at the embassy suites this evening,' said Rick Rice, a spokesman for the Asheville Police Department said Saturday night. 'Chuck Edwards was present during the disturbance.' Police said there have been no arrests and no one was injured. Edwards was scheduled to speak around 6 p.m. at a conference held by Rotary District 7670, which began Friday at the Embassy Suites by Hilton in downtown Asheville. Edwards staff said Saturday night a statement would be forthcoming, but only provided one after McClatchy published an article about the incident. Edwards told McClatchy in a written statement that after he spoke, he 'refused to engage with an intoxicated man that was cursing.' 'He became more belligerent and later called the police,' Edwards' statement said. 'His behavior was embarrassing to the people at the event and was duly noted by the police. To my knowledge there was no further action taken by police.' Rice said any further information about the incident would not be available until Monday. Edwards' district was the most heavily affected by Helene last September of any part of North Carolina and is still working to recover and rebuild. 'In the wake of Hurricane Helene, many of our Rotary families and neighbors have faced difficult times,' the conference website stated. 'But, as always, we have come together to support one another, embodying the Rotary spirit of 'Service Above Self' and truly putting 'Peace in Motion.'' This is a developing story and will be updated.

Delta's New Route Connects New York City to This Iconic Florida Destination for the First Time Ever

A beach getaway just got easier from the Big Apple. Delta Air Lines will soon begin new service between New York's LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Panama City, Florida's Northwest Florida Beaches International Airport (ECP), which serves the popular Panama City Beach and surrounding communities. The service will operate weekly starting June 14 before moving to daily on Nov. 6. Travel + Leisure spotted one-way fares as low as $199 for the new route on Delta's website, with availability throughout the summer and fall. The region is a popular tourism destination, and home to a newly opened hotel, the 225-room Embassy Suites by Hilton Panama City Beach Resort, which began welcoming guests in 2023. Families may also enjoy the Splash Resort, which has a water park and dive-in movie theater. While many sun-seekers visit the area for beach and ocean activities like a shipwreck trail for scuba divers and viewing the world's largest bottlenose dolphin population, outdoor enthusiasts can also enjoy a variety of hiking at popular trails within St. Andrews State Park, according to AllTrails. The region is also home to the Tyndall Air Force Base. The flight route was originally announced in February, with celebration by the airport leadership who described the new route as "historic" for the region. 'Partnering with Delta Air Lines to offer this new seasonal service will provide our passengers with more convenient travel options and enhance connectivity between New York City and the beautiful beaches of Northwest Florida,' ECP Airport Executive Director Parker W. McClellan Jr. said in an interview with local news station WJHG at the time of the announcement. Best of all, travelers can utilize the new daily service to explore nearby communities such as Destin, Florida, and Fort Walton Beach, Florida. The region has been recognized for its family friendly activities and creative tourism support, such as having local moms available to provide family travel guidance.
