Amir Cup Round of 16 matches kick-off today

Tribune News Network Doha Al Shahania will meet Mesaimeer at the Al Thumama Stadium on Sunday at 5.15pm as the Round of 16 of the prestigious Amir Cup football tournament get underway. Ah Ahli will lock horns with Qatar SC at the Jassim Bin Hamad Stadium at 8.15pm. Speaking ahead of the match, Al Shahania coach Jose Murcia said, 'The Amir Cup is different now. Mesaimeer had a strong season in the Second Division, and this match feels like a final. We have to stay focused.' 'Our ambition is high. Right now, the focus is on Mesaimeer. We must qualify from the round of 16 — then our ambition will grow. We're motivated, but we won't forget where we came from. In the Amir Cup, anything is possible.' Mesaimeer coach Mubarak Rashteh, said, 'We've prepared well and the players are fully focused. We've had good results in the Second Division, but this match won't be easy for either side. These games often come down to luck — and we'll need some of that.' 'Injuries have affected us this season, but we're ready now. This match is like a final for us. Nothing is impossible in the cup, and every team has the right to dream in the country's most prestigious tournament.' Al Ahli coach Igor Biscan said they are looking forward to the clash with Qatar SC. 'We're very happy to be part of the Amir Cup. The match against Qatar SC is like a final for us. We have to give everything. Al Ahli hasn't reached the later stages in recent years, but we're motivated and fully focused this time,' he said. 'Yes, we lost a tough Qatar Cup semi-final. We played well but must be sharper, avoid mistakes, and be more practical. We couldn't make changes last season due to squad issues, but now we must defend well and not concede — that's key in knockout matches.' Qatar SC coach Youssef Safri, said, 'The Amir Cup is one of the greatest tournaments in Qatari football. Winning it is an honour for every player, coach, and club.' 'We reached the final last season and lost to Al Sadd. We know how hard it is to get there again.' 'We start this year's campaign against Al Ahli, a well-organized and consistent team. The Emir's Cup is just four matches — we treat each one like a final and give the tournament the respect it deserves.' 'Competing for the Emir's Cup is every club's right. Al Ahli is strong and finished in the top four. We're ready despite the absence of Ahmed Abdel Qader through injury. Focus and determination will be key.'

Al-Arabi sets up showdown with Kuwait Club

KUWAIT CITY, April 29: Al-Arabi secured a place in the Crown Prince Cup final against Kuwait Club, scheduled for May 19 at Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium, after edging past Al-Qadsiya 1-0. Bahraini midfielder Kamil Al-Aswad scored the decisive goal. Earlier, Kuwait Club beat Kazma 4-2 to reach the final. The "Greens previously defeated Al-Qadsiya twice in the Zain Premier League (2-1 and 4-2) but suffered a narrow loss in the Super Cup semi-final. The two sides are set to meet again this Friday in the third round of the league championship group stage. To celebrate the win and motivate the squad, Al-Arabi Club President Abdulaziz Ashour awarded each player a KD 2,000 bonus for reaching the final. Meanwhile, Al-Qadisiya head coach Zeljko Petrovic expressed disappointment after the loss, stating: 'We didn't deserve to lose. My players performed better than Al-Arabi, but luck wasn't on our side.' He added that several missed chances contributed to the defeat and hinted at other unspoken factors that he would report internally. When asked about his future with the club, Petrovic responded, 'My contract ends on May 31. Whether I continue or not is up to the club. I wish it the best regardless.' Al-Qadsiya remains in contention for silverware, having already qualified for the quarterfinals of the Emir's Cup, with the final scheduled for June 16. Kuwait Club's Adel Aqla confirmed that decisions regarding contract renewals for professional players have been deferred until season's end. This decision comes under the direction of the club's board and technical staff, led by Montenegrin coach Nebojsa Jovovic. Among the club's foreign players, only Congolese midfielder Malik Zola has a contract extending into next season. The contracts of Tunisian striker Taha Khenissi, Moroccan midfielders Yahya Jabrane and Amin Abu Al-Fath, and Bahraini winger Mohammed Marhoon all expire after the current campaign. Aqla emphasized that the fate of the coaching staff would depend on the team's performance and achievements during the final stretch of the season. Kuwait SC currently leads the league by two points over Al-Arabi with three rounds to go and has also advanced to the quarterfinals of the Emir's Cup. Following Kazma's defeat to Kuwait Club, goalkeeper Faisal Al-Subaie criticized Russian referee Sergei Shapin, holding him accountable for the result. 'The referee disrupted the focus of our players, the substitutes, and even the fans,' Al-Subaie stated.

Kuwait eyes title glory against Fahaheel as Kazma and Al-Nasr battle relegation fears

KUWAIT CITY, April 17: The Zain Premier League enters a crucial stage this weekend, with Kuwait Club inching closer to securing the championship title, while Kazma and Al-Nasr face decisive clashes in the relegation group. Kuwait Club, currently leading the championship group with 50 points, will take on Al-Fahaheel tomorrow (Saturday) at 6:45 PM at Jaber Al-Mubarak Stadium in the second round of the title race. The reigning champion is eyeing its fourth consecutive league title—and the 20th in the club's history. Buoyed by a strong 3-0 win over Al-Tadamon in the first round and a convincing Amir Cup quarterfinal qualification after defeating Al-Jazira 3-0, the Whites are riding a wave of high morale. They'll also look to maintain their dominance over Al-Fahaheel, having beaten them twice this season with identical 3-0 scorelines. However, any slip-up could open the door for second-placed Al-Arabi, who trail by four points with three rounds to go. Meanwhile, fifth-placed Al-Fahaheel (29 points) still harbors hopes of finishing in the top three. After holding Al-Arabi to a 1-1 draw in the last round, they aim to upset another title contender and leave their mark on the competition. In the relegation group, today's matchups are critical for survival. Kazma faces Yarmouk at 5:25 PM at Ali Sabah Al-Salem Stadium, while Al-Nasr meets Khaitan at 7:50 PM at Al-Sadaka Wal Salam Stadium. Kazma tops the relegation standings with 19 points and needs just one point from their remaining three matches to secure their Premier League status. Having defeated Yarmouk three times this season—twice in the league (2-0) and once in the Crown Prince Cup (3-1)—Kazma enters the match as the clear favorite, despite recent instability, including a surprise exit from the Emir's Cup at the hands of Al-Jahra. For Yarmouk, the path to survival is a near-impossible mission. With just 6 points, they must win all their remaining matches and hope today's Al-Nasr vs. Khaitan game ends in a draw. They would also need both teams to drop points in the final two rounds to keep their slim hopes alive. Al-Nasr (12 points) and Khaitan (11 points) are neck and neck, making tonight's clash a pivotal showdown. The winner will take a crucial step toward retaining its place in the top flight, while the loser will face increasing pressure as the final rounds approach.
