England's Woes Increase After 97-Run Thrashing Against India In Nottingham

Last Updated: Nat Sciver-Brunt's England fined 10% of match fee for slow over-rate in first T20I against India, losing by 97 runs. Nat Sciver-Brunt's England have been handed a penalty, of 10% of their match fee, for maintaining a slow over-rate against India in the first T20I of the five-match series at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Saturday, June 28, which they lost by a whopping 97 runs, not able to chase down a big target. England were ruled two overs short of the target after time permits were taken into consideration. England had opted to field first in the T20I played in Nottingham and ended up conceding a whopping 210. According to Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct, which relates to minimum over-rate offences, cricketers are fined five per cent of their match fee for every over the team cannot bowl in the allotted time. On-field umpires Jacqueline Williams and James Middlebrook, third umpire Sue Redfern and fourth umpire Anna Harris levelled the charge, which was accepted by Sciver-Brunt. The England skipper accepted the proposed sanctions, which meant that there was no requirement for a formal hearing. Helen Pack of the Emirates International Panel of Match Referees imposed the sanction. England lost the first T20I by 97 runs, which was their heaviest-ever defeat in the format. The visitors now lead the five-match T20I series 1-0. Stand-in Indian captain Smriti Mandhana (112, 62 balls) and Harleen Deol (43, 23 balls) added 94 runs for the second wicket as India posted a commanding 210/5 after being invited to bat. Sciver-Brunt (66, 42 balls) waged a lone battle for England, who were limited to 113 all out in less than 15 overs by the on-song Indian bowlers. Mandhana, who led the side in the absence of injured regular skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, stole the day with a knock that was a full-fledged display of her style, aggression and ability to play shots around the field. Mandhana gave the Indian innings some initial impetus, making 77 runs with a struggling Shafali Varma (20, 22 balls), whose return to top-flight cricket after a gap of eight months was less than satisfactory.
