Emma Rice brings Hitchcock comedy-thriller to Bath stage

EMMA Rice's new stage adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock's North by Northwest is being staged in Bath. The production, which is part of a UK tour, will be at the Theatre Royal Bath from May 27 to May 31. Director Emma Rice has reimagined the classic thriller as a comedy. The story follows Roger Thornhill, a man who is mistaken for someone else and finds himself caught up in a Cold War conspiracy. The production features a cast of six actors, backed by a 1950s soundtrack. The cast includes Ewan Wardrop as Roger Thornhill, Mirabelle Gremaud as Anna, Patrycja Kujawska as Eva Kendall, Simon Oskarsson as Valerian, Katy Owen as The Professor, and Karl Queensborough as Philip Vandamm. Emma Rice, who adapted and directed the production, is the artistic director of Wise Children. She has previously adapted and directed several other productions for the company, including The Buddha of Suburbia, Blue Beard, and The Little Matchgirl and Happier Tales. Prior to that, she worked for Kneehigh theatre as an actor, director and artistic director. The production is a co-production with York Theatre Royal, HOME Manchester, and Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse. It has already been performed at York Theatre Royal, HOME Manchester and Liverpool Playhouse, and will also be performed at Everyman Theatre Cheltenham and London's Alexandra Palace Theatre. The creative team working alongside Emma Rice includes set and costume designer Rob Howell, sound designer Simon Baker, lighting designer Malcolm Rippeth, choreographer and movement director Etta Murfitt, and creative consultant Mark Kaufman. The original North by Northwest film was produced and directed by Alfred Hitchcock in 1959, and starred Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint and James Mason. Tickets for the Bath performances can be booked via the Theatre Royal Bath website. The performances will take place at 7.30pm from Tuesday to Saturday, with additional performances at 2.30pm on Wednesday and Saturday. Ticket prices range from £10.50 to £45.50, with a booking fee applicable.

4 of the best vineyards in the UK to experience English wine

This article was produced by National Geographic Traveller (UK). There was a time, not so long ago really, when English oenophiles looking to set up shop had no choice but to relocate to the balmier climes of France or Italy. Not anymore. A changing climate, a culture of experimentation and greater awareness of which regions are best suited to grape growing have combined to make England one of Europe's most exciting viticultural destinations — and it shows. Across the country, you'll find tours and tastings that showcase some of England's best homegrown producers. Minerva Wines was born in 2015 after local farmer Emma Rice was inspired by a trip to Beaune — which lies at the centre of Burgundy's winemaking region — to plant some 10,000 vines at Corston Fields Farm in Somerset. A grape's toss from Bath's Georgian crescents and Roman pools, the vineyard is launching new experiences last spring, with visitors invited to join supper clubs, partake in vine-side tastings of sparkling vintages. This year, guests can experience something a little more unusual: an immersive wine and sound experience that sees Minerva pair each of its wines with an AI-generated musical soundtrack, shedding light on the unseen connection between sound and flavour. The barley fields that blanket Norfolk have made the county a centre for beer and brewing, but it's the region's burgeoning wine industry that's stealing the limelight this summer. Norwich Wine Week will see the medieval city host some of the region's most important wine producers, amid the timber beams of Dragon Hall, including Burn Valley Vineyard and Chet Valley Vineyard. Events kick off on 18 June, ushering in a week-long festival that'll showcase Norfolk's food and music as well as its viticulture. Expect talks and tastings in award-winning restaurants and historical buildings throughout the city. Since 2015, Taittinger — the renowned French winemaking family and producers of Champagne — has been quietly planting Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vines on the sunny, south-facing slopes around Selling Court Farm in Kent. The result is Domaine Evremond, the first UK vineyard established by a Grande Marque Champagne — one of France's 24 'big-brand' Champagne houses. It's been a long time coming, but the first bottles of its premium sparkling wine, the Classic Cuvée, are now available to try, with guided tastings taking place on the winery's panoramic terrace. Stitched into Herefordshire's sage-green hills, White Heron Estate is perhaps best known as the producer behind British Cassis, a sharp, fruity liqueur crafted using blackcurrants from the family-run fruit farm's plantations. More recently, operations have expanded to include a vineyard of Seyval Blanc, Madeleine Angevine and Reichensteiner grapes. The Green family has long welcomed visitors for tastings and guided tours, but thanks to a new e-bike excursion launched in April 2025, guests can now explore the estate's vineyards, orchards and blackcurrant fields from the saddle, stopping for glasses of cider, cassis and sparkling white wine en route. Egg prices drive up demand for chicks in Des Moines

It's like Black Friday at Bomgaars, but this season, everyone's scrambling for chicks. Why it matters: The cost of eggs is driving people to buy their own backyard flocks. Midwest large eggs were $5.23 per dozen last week, down 39%, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, but Easter could cause prices to soar again. Average egg prices in 2019 were $1.50 for a dozen. State of play: The demand for chicks is so high right now that there's a long line of people who wait for the weekly shipment at Bomgaars in Des Moines for them, Emma Rice, a supervisor at the shop, tells Axios. Rice, who helps order the chicks, says Bomgaars gets around 2,000 chicks weekly that they split for sale over two days. In the past, they've helped customers preorder chickens from hatcheries, but the demand has been so high that they haven't been able to offer that service this year. People drive from as far as Marshalltown to get chicks, she says. By the numbers: Taking care of hens instead of buying eggs at the store isn't really a cost-saving strategy, according to Jenn Tompkins, co-owner of the backyard chickens company Rent the Chicken, which rents in Council Bluffs. Here's an approximate breakdown of what keeping two backyard chickens looks like: You get eight to 14 eggs a week total during the spring and fall (winter and summer can be slower), if your two hens are younger than three years old, says Tompkins. A coop can cost more than $250. It costs $20 a month for food and upkeep, plus two pints of water a day. Plus: Each city in the metro has its own rules regarding keeping chickens, so make sure you check before you invest. The bottom line: If you do try to get chicks, Rice recommends calling Bomgaars before making the drive and showing up to the store early.

Wiltshire Police's rescue dog Reggie 'loves' drug recovery role

A rescue dog is celebrating one year of being adopted by a police force as a drugs, cash and firearms recovery dog after its owner became too ill to care for a three-year-old English springer spaniel, was rescued from Dogs Trust Evesham by Wiltshire Police in February last year."Reggie loves nothing more than getting in the car at the start of the shift, as it means he will get to search and, in turn, get his beloved tennis ball," dog handler Police Constable Emma Rice Evesham Dogs Trust team say they are "thrilled" Reggie is so happy after being identified by staff as suitable for a working home. The rescue centre found Reggie's high energy levels meant he was happiest when he had an activity or training to focus on, a Dogs Trust spokesperson said."Our rehoming centre teams are trained to spot dogs with extra special crime-fighting potential," added Louise Crawford, Animal Welfare Scheme Coordinator at Dogs as a fully licensed police dog, Reggie is "achieving so much and reaching his full potential", she said. Reggie "excelled" at training and after graduating last May he has carried out more than 60 searches, finding thousands of pounds of cash and quantities of drugs, and is a "joy to work with", PC Rice said."He is a workaholic and a very strong-willed boy and has adjusted to his new life very well [and] given the option, he would work all day."He loves nothing more than getting in the car at the start of the shift, as it means he will get to search and, in turn, get his beloved tennis ball," she added. Reggie is the first dog adopted by the Wiltshire force since it joined The Animal Welfare Visitors Scheme last initiative, which began 23 years ago, ensures the training, housing and transport of police dogs meet high animal welfare standards, with 29 UK Police Forces belonging to the Crawford said: "Rescue dogs have so much to offer and can achieve great things."Reggie's story and success in his new life are wonderful ways to promote this message [and] I'm sure he will be the first of many to succeed at Wiltshire Police force," she added.
