Contract conservancy workers and drivers protest in Coimbatore seeking wage hike and pending dues

Over 200 contract conservancy workers and drivers staged a protest in front of the Coimbatore Collectorate on Monday, demanding a hike in wages and the clearance of pending Provident Fund (PF) and Employees' State Insurance (ESI) payments. The protesters urged the Coimbatore Corporation to revise their wages in line with Government Order (GO) 62, which they said stipulates a daily wage of ₹770. They said currently, contract sanitary workers receive ₹15,500 per month, while drivers are paid ₹20,150. 'This has been a long-pending demand. We have been raising it regularly,' said one of the workers. In response, the Corporation stated that PF and ESI contributions have been credited till April, and that talks are ongoing with workers regarding the wage structure.

Sanitary workers stage protests as CCMC fails to pay revised salary

COIMBATORE: Sanitary workers condemned the Coimbatore City Municipal Corporation (CCMC) administration and launched protests at few ward offices in the city on Saturday, after the civic body failed to pay revised wages. Sanitary workers of the CCMC staged a huge protest last month and went on a strike, boycotting solid waste management work, which included the door-to-door collection of segregated garbage in 100 wards of the city. The strike was led by thousands of contract sanitary workers demanding better wages, permanent employment status, and proper regulation of their Provident Fund (PF) and Employees' State Insurance (ESI) contributions. The workers also voiced strong opposition to the hiring of migrant labourers and the continuation of the contract labour system, which they feel undermines job security and fair treatment.

Contract workers of Coimbatore Medical College Hospital petition District Collector over wage issues, job insecurity

Contract workers employed at the Coimbatore Medical College Hospital (CMCH) submitted a petition to District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar on Monday, raising concerns over non-payment of minimum wages, lack of salary slips, denial of paid leave, and threats of termination. In the petition, the workers said the minimum daily wage of ₹770, as announced by the District Collector for 2025, had not been implemented. They also alleged that deductions towards Employees' State Insurance (ESI) and Provident Fund (PF) had not been properly deposited in their respective accounts. They further stated that salary slips had not been issued to date. Workers who raised these concerns reportedly faced threats of removal from the contractor. According to the petition, new terms have been introduced under the existing contract arrangement which could lead to termination of their jobs. Some workers were allegedly pressured to sign resignation letters. The workers claimed that a form with no mention of wages was circulated and that they were intimidated into accepting the new conditions. They pleaded with the District Collector to intervene immediately, ensure the pending dues were settled, salary slips issued, and to prevent the loss of their jobs.

Wage revision to RTC contract workers demanded

Rajamahendravaram: The Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is allegedly failing to pay contract workers as per the official circular, paying them only Rs 8,000 per month instead of the legally mandated wages, said BVN Poornima Raju, East Godavari District Secretary of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU). He alleged that contract workers are facing severe exploitation, with a deduction of Rs 500 for every single day of leave taken, and the authorities are neglecting labour laws meant to protect workers. He made these remarks while submitting a representation to the Depot Manager along with PBS Raju, Superintendent (Mechanical), on behalf of the APSRTC Contract Workers Union (affiliated with CITU). The representation demanded job security for contract workers, protection from harassment by contractors and officials, and compliance with labour laws. He stated that the law mandates a minimum wage of Rs 26,000 per month for contract workers, along with benefits like Provident Fund (PF), Employees' State Insurance (ESI), pension, social security, and job security. The union also demanded that the contract workers receive appointment letters and that their wages should be deposited directly into their bank accounts. They further demand the need for maternity leave for female workers, as well as casual, earned, and weekly leaves, as per legal provisions. S Venkateswara Rao, CITU leader from AP Paper Mill, and other members of the APSRTC Contract Workers Union were also present during the submission of the representation.
