A Mississippi church deacon was fatally shot while trying to protect people from a dispute that broke out during an Easter egg hunt hosted by his church, witnesses and law enforcement said. Empowerment Ministries Christian Center in Gulfport, Mississippi, identified the deacon as Eddie Shed and said he died on April 12 while trying to "save others from harm" at the church's Easter egg hunt at Jack and Florence Goldin Park in Gulfport. The Gulfport Police Department said the shooting stemmed from a "child custody dispute" and that two people who tried to "deescalate the fight" were hit by gunfire, as well as the suspect. Shed was pronounced dead at the scene and another person was airlifted to an out-of-state hospital. The following day, police arrested Tyran Deion Gable, 24, of Saucier, Mississippi, on charges of murder and aggravated assault, according to the Gulfport Police Department. Gable was hit by gunfire during the shooting and was taken to a hospital for treatment, police said. In a statement posted to social media, the church said Shed was killed "in a senseless act of gun violence." "Deacon Shed epitomized the virtues of a hero, displaying selfless courage and bravery that ultimately saved others from harm," said the statement from Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, which describes itself as non-denominational. "He paid the ultimate price for his valor, and we are deeply saddened by this loss." Deacon was 'a hero,' witnesses say Witnesses of the shooting said Shed didn't hesitate to protect children at the Easter egg hunt. 'I wouldn't expect nothing less from him to do something like that, nothing less. He was just a hero,' longtime church member Shatondria Ball told WLOX. 'He died a hero doing what he does best, and that's protecting and that's loving and that's looking out for everyone,' fellow church member Alexis Weathersby told the outlet. 'He was just a wonderful man that was willing to do any and everything for anyone.' Gregg S. Magee, senior pastor of Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, described Shed in a statement as "a pillar of strength within our community and a beacon of light and hope." "His unwavering faith, kindness, and dedication to serving others have left an indelible mark on all who knew him," the pastor said. Shed is survived by his wife and three children. A GoFundMe for his family has raised nearly $16,000 as of April 15.

Deacon Eddie Shed Dies Protecting Others From Shots At Easter Egg Hunt

Mississippi deacon Eddie Shed died a hero on Saturday (April 12) after an Easter egg hunt was terrorized by gunfire. WLOX reports that 24-year-old Tyran Deion Gable got into a heated argument with the mother of his child at the gathering hosted by Empowerment Ministries Christian Center (EMCC). Witnesses say Gable then shot two people who were attempting to deescalate the situation. One of those people was airlifted to a hospital in Mobile, Alabama. The other was Deacon Shed, who had also served as head of security for the host church. He was pronounced dead at the scene. 'He died a hero doing what he does best, and that's protecting and that's loving and that's looking out for everyone,' clergy member Alexis Weathersby told the outlet when speaking on Shed. 'He was just a wonderful man that was willing to do any and everything for anyone.' Shed was protecting the children when the gunfire erupted. EMCC Senior Pastor, Dr. Gregg S. Magee, Sr., issued a statement on Facebook on behalf of the church about the incident and Shed's death. 'It is with heavy hearts that we, the Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, address the tragic events that unfolded during our Family Easter Egg Hunt at Prudie Circle Earlier today. Our beloved Deacon Eddie Shed was taken from us in a senseless act of gun violence,' it read. Magee continued, 'Deacon Shed epitomized the virtues of a hero, displaying selfless courage and bravery that ultimately saved others from harm. He paid the ultimate price for his valor, and we are deeply saddened by this loss.' He was described as 'a pillar of strength within our community and a beacon of light and hope,' noting that 'his unwavering faith, kindness, and dedication to serving others have left an indelible mark onall who knew him.' His family has started a GoFundMe to raise money for his wife, Doris, their three children and any financial burdens that may incur. Gable, who was also shot and injured, has been arrested and charged with one count of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated assault. He was not granted bond for the murder charge. However, the judge did set a $250,000 bond for the aggravated assault charge. Miss. Church Easter Egg Hunt Takes Tragic Turn After Deacon Gets Caught in Fatal Altercation

What started as a community event celebrating Easter turned fatal at a Mississippi church. According to authorities, a deacon at the Empowerment Ministries Christian Center (EMCC) stepped in to defend a fellow church goer from an armed man, then tragedy struck. Let's start from the beginning. Members of EMCC gathered for a family egg hunt on Saturday (April 12). An altercation involving Tyran Deion Gable, 24, and a woman broke out during the festivities, according to WLOX. An initial investigation determined the dispute began over a custody battle. That's when Deacon Eddie Shed, 39, stepped in to deescalate the domestic situation, according to WLOX. It's unclear what exactly escalated the disagreement, but at some point, Gable allegedly pulled a gun and began shooting. Shed and a second parishioner, Jimmy Nance, were both hit several times, according to a GoFundMe page. But while Nance was airlifted to a hospital in Mobile, Ala. to treat his 'severe' injuries, Shed was pronounced dead at the scene. Now, Members of EMCC are calling Shed a 'hero' after he was killed while trying to protectthe woman. In a GoFundMe page to support his family, YaFrica Edwards wrote the deacon showed 'selfless courage and bravery that ultimately saved others from harm. He paid the ultimate price for his valor, and we are deeply saddened by this loss.' Other members of the church shared similar sentiments. 'He died a hero doing what he does best, and that's protecting and that's loving and that's looking out for everyone,' fellow church member Alexis Weathersby told WLOX. 'He was just a wonderful man that was willing to do any and everything for anyone.' Another EMCC member, Taylor Sanders, said Shed 'was that guy you could always have a laugh with and always count on to be at the church.' She continued saying, 'When the doors opened and when the doors shut, he was just that guy, and we're just distraught at this moment.' The alleged suspect, Gable, was also injured during the confrontation, according to the Sun Herald. He was later arrested and charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault. A judge denied Gable bond for the murder charge but awarded a $250,000 bond for the aggravated assault charge. For the latest news, Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

Deacon killed in shooting at church Easter egg hunt in Mississippi

A Mississippi deacon suffered fatal injuries in a shooting that broke out Saturday during an Easter egg hunt hosted by his church, according to the church and local news reports. Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, which describes itself as a non-denominational ministry located in the southern Mississippi city of Gulfport, identified the deacon as Eddie Shed, who also served as its head of security. The church said Shed was killed while attempting to intervene in the shooting. Gunfire erupted from "a domestic dispute gone wrong" at the Easter egg hunt, held in Gulfport's Jack and Florence Goldin Park, CBS News affiliate WLOX reported. Police characterized the argument as a child custody dispute, according to WLOX, and witnesses told the station Shed stepped in to protect children in the vicinity once the shooting started. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Two other people were wounded in the shooting, with at least one of them suffering life-threatening injuries, WLOX reported. Police said three people have been detained in connection with the incident, according to the station. Empowerment Ministries Christian Center said the shooting was not carried out by anyone affiliated with the church. CBS News contacted Gulfport Police for more information but did not receive an immediate reply. Shed has been heralded for his service and valor by Empowerment Ministries Christian Center, whose pastor Gregg Magee said in a social media post that the deacon's actions "ultimately saved others from harm." "Our beloved Deacon Eddie Shed was taken from us in a senseless act of gun violence," the pastor said. "Deacon Shed was a pillar of strength within our community and a beacon of light and hope. His unwavering faith, kindness, and dedication to serving others have left an indelible mark on all who knew him." Praising Shed in a separate post, the church asked community members to contribute to a GoFundMe campaign created Sunday to support his family, including Shed's wife and three children. "We are heartbroken by the loss of Deacon Eddie Shed, a true hero taken from us too soon. His courage and commitment to our community will never be forgotten. He dedicated his life to serving others, leaving behind a loving family, including his wife Doris and their children," the Empowerment Ministries Christian Center said in the post. "In this challenging time, we are asking for your help to support the Shed family. Every contribution made through our GoFundMe will ease their financial burden and honor Deacon Eddie's incredible legacy of love and service." The fundraiser had collected roughly $4,700 of its $25,000 goal as of Monday morning.
