Rains ease slightly in Thiruvananthapuram, relief camps opened
Thiruvananthapuram: After days of incessant heavy rain, the district saw a slight respite on Saturday. However, strong winds and rain already caused widespread destruction across various parts of the district.
In regions like Kattakada, Nedumangad and Varkala, uprooted trees caused by strong winds led to the complete destruction of six houses. Over 100 houses were partially damaged in the district. Urban areas, including Chackai–Pettah Road, experienced severe waterlogging, affecting traffic and daily life.
In response to the extensive damage, two relief camps were opened — one at Enchakkal Govt UP School in Thiruvananthapuram taluk and the other at Pozhiyoor Govt UP School in Neyyattinkara taluk.
As per official reports, a total of 79 people from 34 families are staying in these camps.
Fire and rescue teams were deployed to remove fallen trees in places such as Kesavadasapuram, Pappanamcode and Devaswom Board Junction. In Peroorkada, a falling tree injured three police officers — a trainee, a havildar and a sub-inspector — all of whom were admitted to the hospital.
Four advertising boards were damaged in the city due to the strong winds.
A dangerously tilted hoarding in Kesavadasapuram was safely dismantled by emergency services.
The agriculture sector also suffered major losses. Crop damage was reported in several blocks, including Perunkadavila, Athiyannur, Vamanapuram and Kattakada.
In Perumkadavila block, 2.58 hectares of crops were lost, 0.44 hectares in Athiyannoor and 2 hectares in Vamanapuram. Over 116 farmers reported crop loss and damage worth Rs 22.3 lakh was recorded on May 30 alone.
Weather forecasts suggest a likely reduction in rainfall in the coming days. However, authorities warned of possible sea surges and urged residents in coastal areas to remain extremely cautious. People living in vulnerable regions are advised to relocate in advance, if necessary, based on official alerts.
