Leo XIV's First Instagram Post From Official Pope Account. What He Said

New Delhi: Pope Leo XIV made his social media debut on Tuesday (May 13), with a first Instagram post, featuring photos from the first days of his pontificate. He borrowed words from his first public address at the Urbi et Orbi after his election on May 8, and wrote: "Peace be with you all!" "This is the first greeting spoken by the Risen Christ, the Good Shepherd. I would like this greeting of peace to resound in your hearts, in your families, and among all people, wherever they may be, in every nation and throughout the world," he added. The late Pope Francis maintained an active presence on social media platforms - Instagram and X (formerly Twitter), sharing excerpts from his speeches and images from public events. These posts offered "near-daily accompaniment throughout Pope Francis' pontificate with short messages of an evangelical nature and exhortations in favor of peace, social justice, and care for creation", said the press release. Pope Francis' posts will be archived in a special section of the Holy See's institutional website. Pope Benedict XVI was the first Pope to open a social media account, sending the first papal tweet on December 12, 2012. About Pope Leo XIV Chicago-born Robert Francis Prevost is the first American pope in history, but is considered as much a cardinal from Latin America because of the many years he spent as a missionary in Peru. Robert Francis, 69, chose his papal name with the help of artificial intelligence (AI). He also said that his name references Pope Leo XIII, who presided over the church at the dawn of the industrial revolution. "I chose to take the name Leo XIV. There are different reasons for this, but mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic Encyclical Rerum Novarum addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution," said the pope, according to the Vatican's translation of his speech. The pope referred to AI as another "industrial revolution" and highlighted the challenges of AI. "In our own day, the church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice and labour," he said.

Pope Leo XIV named himself with AI in mind. Here's how

In his inaugural address as Pope Leo XIV , he disclosed that his papal name was, in fact, a product of artificial intelligence . He went on to outline the broader vision for his papacy, noting that AI played a role not only in shaping his thinking but also in guiding the selection of the name "Pope Leo XIV." At the same time, he offered a measured perspective on the technology—acknowledging its value as a tool, while cautioning against the complex challenges it presents to the preservation of human dignity , justice, and labour rights . Two days after his election, the newly appointed Pope—formerly Robert Francis Prevost of Chicago—addressed the College of Cardinals , invoking the legacy of Pope Leo XIII , who led the Catholic Church from 1878 to 1903. He drew a compelling parallel between the transformative forces of the 19th-century Industrial Revolution and the disruptive potential of artificial intelligence in today's world. — VaticanNews (@VaticanNews) Responding to the question of how AI influenced his choice of name, he explained, '...I chose to take the name Leo XIV. There are different reasons for this, but mainly because Pope Leo XIII, in his historic Encyclical Rerum Novarum , addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution.' In recent years, the Catholic Church has intensified its focus on the ethical dimensions of artificial intelligence. A Vatican document released this January—now translated into English—offers a nuanced assessment of AI, probing its limitations, its relationship to truth, and the growing moral concerns surrounding its advancement. The document also references a pointed caution from Pope Francis the previous year, in which he warned of AI's ability to produce 'partially or completely false narratives, believed and broadcast as if they were true.' Now, Pope Leo XIV has made it clear that he intends to carry forward this legacy. Drawing inspiration from Rerum Novarum , the 1891 encyclical by Pope Leo XIII that addressed the rights of workers during the industrial upheaval of the 19th century, Pope Leo XIV expressed his intention to approach the digital age—and the AI revolution—with the same moral clarity and social commitment. In his remarks to the College of Cardinals, he called on the Church to respond to the ethical trials of this new era with the same resolve it once showed during the rise of industrial society. 'In our own day, the Church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice and labour,' he said. Pope Leo XIV Reveals How AI Helped Choose His Papal Name

In his first formal address as the pontiff, Pope Leo XIV revealed that artificial intelligence (AI) not only shaped his thinking but also his choice of papal name. The Chicago-born Augustinian missionary, Robert Prevost, was elected on Thursday (May 8) afternoon after a two-thirds majority vote from the cardinals. In an address to the College of Cardinals, Pope Leo XIV explained that his name references Pope Leo XIII, who presided over the church between 1878 and 1903-- at the dawn of the Industrial Revolution. The new pope drew parallels between the rapid industrialisation of the 19th century and today's surge in AI. "I chose to take the name Leo XIV. There are different reasons for this, but mainly because Pope Leo XIII in his historic Encyclical Rerum Novarum addressed the social question in the context of the first great industrial revolution," said the pope, according to the Vatican's translation of his speech. The original Rerum novarum, issued in 1891, addressed the rights of workers amid the upheavals of the industrial age. Perils of AI The pope also highlighted the perils of AI, adding that society must confront the ethical challenges of today's technological era. "In our own day, the church offers to everyone the treasury of her social teaching in response to another industrial revolution and to developments in the field of artificial intelligence that pose new challenges for the defence of human dignity, justice and labour," he said. The pope's comment comes in the backdrop of the US President Donald Trump posting an AI-generated image of himself dressed as the pontiff, joking he would like the job. Notably, Pope Leo's predecessor, the late Pope Francis, frequently talked about potential benefits and risks associated with the novel technology. In 2023, Pope Francis became a victim of AI-driven forgery when an image of him in a white designer puffer jacket went viral on social media. Reacting to the incident, he cautioned about doctored images that 'appear perfectly plausible but false". Pope Leo XIV will be formally installed as pope on May 18, 2025, in St. Peter's Square, marking the beginning of his papacy.

Pope Leo warns of AI's impact in first meeting with cardinals

Pope Leo XIV makes his first appearance after conclave PHOTO:Anadolu Agency Listen to article Newly elected Pope Leo XIV has called on the Catholic Church to confront the moral and social challenges posed by artificial intelligence (AI), in his first formal address to the College of Cardinals. The 68-year-old American-born pontiff, formerly Cardinal Robert Prevost, was elected earlier this week, becoming the first pope from the United States. In his inaugural speech, Pope Leo emphasised the Church's historic mission to uphold human dignity and social justice, drawing parallels between the modern AI revolution and the industrial upheaval of the late 19th century. 'Pope Leo XIII, with the Encyclical Rerum Novarum, addressed the social question of his time,' Leo XIV said. 'Today, the Church must respond with her social teaching to the transformations brought by artificial intelligence.' The late Pope Francis, who died last month, was an outspoken advocate for regulating AI and ensuring it remains human-centric. Leo XIV paid tribute to Francis's legacy, pledging to continue his vision of a Church committed to ethical leadership in the face of emerging technologies. The pontiff also made a symbolic visit Saturday to the Madonna sanctuary in Genazzano, managed by the Augustinian order, reflecting his personal and spiritual ties. He greeted crowds and offered blessings during the visit. In the same address, cardinals also discussed ongoing concerns about the Church's relationship with China. Czech Cardinal Dominik Duka referenced the sensitive 2018 Vatican-China agreement on bishop appointments, noting the importance of maintaining dialogue. Leo XIV, a former missionary in Peru, assumes the papacy at a time of global technological and geopolitical uncertainty, pledging a renewed focus on justice, peace, and ethical stewardship in the digital age.
