Deaths in Enderlin The National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Forks confirmed that two of the deaths were attributed to a tornado that hit a home about three miles east of Enderlin in Cass County near the border with Ransom County. NWS teams have assigned preliminary tornado ratings based on damage for three confirmed tornadoes: West of Valley City, North Dakota: at least EF-3 South of Valley City, North Dakota: at least EF-2 Enderlin, North Dakota area: at least EF-3 The Cass County Sheriff's Office reports that two people were found dead at a home in rural Enderlin after a tornado hit the area. A third person was then found dead by the Enderlin Fire Department. The Associated Press reports that about 24,000 customers were without power in North Dakota. The storm was part of a larger system that also dropped hail across the upper Midwest. Extensive damage in Bemidji Beltrami County Emergency Management said that it issued a tornado warning for the southern part of the county, which includes Bemidji, just after midnight. However, no tornado sightings were reported in the area. A national weather service team is in the Bemidji area, but has not yet provided any updates. Crews are also working to clear downed trees obstructing roadways. While the derecho that stretched across North Dakota, northern Minnesota and northern Wisconsin impacted the most locations, two monster supercells that formed ahead of the line in eastern North Dakota produced multiple large, violent tornadoes. One of the tornadoes killed at least three people about three miles east of Enderlin. According to the Cass County Sheriff's Office, deputies were dispatched to a home at approximately 11:40 p.m. Once there, deputies were informed by the Enderlin Fire Department that storm chasers had found two people dead at the scene. "Shortly after learning of this, the Enderlin Fire Department was dispatched to another location, and a third deceased person was found as a result of the tornado. Deputies found extensive damage to the area and began conducting well-being checks on people with several partner agencies," the sheriff's office said Saturday morning. Meteorologist Andy Hill said the Enderlin tornado is "one of the strongest tornadoes" he has covered, and the radar data make it the strongest tornado ever recorded in North Dakota. The official intensity, however, has not yet been verified by the NWS. The supercells that produced the monster tornadoes were eventually swallowed by the fast-moving complex of storms that produced 70-110 mph wind gusts across North Dakota and northern Minnesota. The highest known wind gust from the line in Minnesota was 106 mph at the Bemidji Airport at 12:45 a.m. The National Weather Service reported that emergency managers were alerting authorities to "extensive damage from falling and uprooted trees on roofs, cars, people trapped." Jorge Prince, the mayor of Bemidji, wrote on Facebook that he "cannot ever recall hearing a rushing wind like that!" Beltrami County officials said Saturday morning that there are "thousands of trees blocking roadways," but no injuries have been reported. "There are widespread power outages and numerous roadways remain impassable due to debris. Residents should plan for long-term power outages as significant infrastructure damage has occurred," the county said. The Cass County Sheriff's Office was dispatched at around 11:40 p.m Friday to assess the damage. Before they arrived at the scene though, storm chasers found two deceases people. The death total increased to three shortly after. "Shortly after learning of this, the Enderlin Fire Department was dispatched to another location, and a third deceased person was found as a result of the tornado," the Cass County Sheriff's Office said. "Deputies found extensive damage to the area and began conducting well-being checks on people with several partner agencies. Law enforcement, the Enderlin Fire Department, and other first responders continue searching the area and checking on residents now." The National Weather Service has not yet rated Friday night's tornadoes. "We can't really rate it until we see what kind of damage it produced," National Weather Service meteorologist Timothy Lynch said. "However, from what I saw on radar and first hand accounts that were sent to us via video, they look like they could potentially be very strong tornadoes. Radar-indicated winds upwards of 110 miles-per-hour and several reports from NDDAWN, personal weather stations reported 80, 90, 100 miles-per-hour winds." The National Weather Service usually issues life-saving warnings before tornadoes strike in the United States.
