Energia bid interest ranges from Japanese trading firm to private equity

The US owner of Energia received several first-round bids in advance of a deadline on Friday, after fielding interest from everyone from a Japanese trading company to North American private equity firms, said sources. New York-based investment firm I Squared Capital , which bought Energia, then known as Viridian Group, in 2016, pressed the start button on the long-awaited sale of the Irish electricity and gas utility in late March. The business is expected to achieve an enterprise value of €2.75 billion. Itochu Corporation, a Japanese trading company that is involved in businesses spanning textiles to energy and chemicals, US private equity giant KKR , and the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board are among parties that have been running the rule over Energia, according to sources. Australian financial services group Macquarie is also among the companies that have been circling the business, said the sources. READ MORE Spokeswomen for I Squared, KKR and Canadian pensions group and a spokesman for Energia declined to comment. It was not possible to secure comment from Itochu outside normal business hours in Japan, while a representative for Macquarie did not provide comment when contacted . Ford chief Lisa Brankin on accelerating the switch to electric vehicles Listen | 41:35 Reuters reported in recent days on the interest of Itochu and the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board, which, it said, may ultimately team up with a UK electricity group in which it has a stake, Octopus Energy. It also said that Czech energy group EPH, French private equity firm Ardian and Spanish infrastructure investor Asterion were carrying out work on Energia with a view to making a bid. I Squared, founded 13 years ago by former executives at Morgan Stanley's infrastructure arm, acquired Energia in 2016 from Bahrain's Arcapita Bank for €1 billion. Arcapita had owned the business for almost a decade. The US firm subsequently sold a minority stake in Energia to an unknown investor the following year and set up a holding company over the business in the Cayman Islands. I Squared has made two unsuccessful efforts to sell the company before now, in 2018 and 2020. Energia, led by chief executive Ian Thom , reported in March that its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation (Ebitda) dipped to €238.3 million for the nine months to the end of December from €246.7 million for the same period in the previous fiscal year. The three parts of Energia's business – renewable energy, a flexible electricity generation business and a unit supplying customers – have proven to be complementary in recent years despite upheaval across energy markets. An Bord Pleanála gave Energia permission in March to build a data centre in Huntstown, Co Dublin, in partnership with tech giant Microsoft, adding to the investment case for potential suitors. Energia also has a solar energy pipeline of more than 1,200MW.

Russian chemical plant, missile parts manufacturer targeted in alleged Ukrainian drone strike

A Russian factory in Lipetsk Oblast making missile parts and a chemical plant in Tula Oblast were targeted by drones overnight on May 24, independent news channel Astra reported. The Energia facility, which lies in the Lipetsk Oblast city of Yelets, was attacked for the second night in a row, with residents reporting at least five explosions overnight, Astra reported. Governor Igor Artamonov confirmed that drone wreckage fell in the city's industrial district, adding there were no casualties. The extent of damage to the plant is not immediately clear. The city of Yelets lies some 250 kilometers (150 miles) north of the Russia-Ukraine border. The Ukrainian military confirmed an earlier attack against the sanctioned facility on May 23, noting that the plant is Russia's "only manufacturer of batteries for glide and correction modules installed on aircraft bombs," and also produces parts for ballistic and cruise missiles. In Tula Oblast, the Azot chemical plant in Novomoskovsk came under a drone strike, starting a fire, Astra reported. The channel shared footage of what appears to be smoke rising from the targeted facility. The Azot company specializes in the production of ammonia and nitrogen fertilizers, as well as organic plastics, resins, chlorine, nitric acid, and more, according to open sources. Dmitry Milyaev, the governor of Tula Oblast, confirmed an overnight drone attack, saying that a fire at a gas pipeline in Novomoskovsk was extinguished and three people were injured. The city lies some 400 kilometers (250 miles) north of the Russia-Ukraine border. Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its forces had downed 104 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 74 in Belgorod Oblast, 24 in Bryansk Oblast, two in Lipetsk Oblast, and one in Tula Oblast. Ukraine has not commented on the claims, which could not be independently verified. US-sanctioned Russian factory reportedly targeted in Ukrainian drone attack on Lipetsk Oblast

Ukrainian drones attacked an industrial zone in the city of Yelets in Russia's Lipetsk Oblast overnight on May 23, causing a fire, Governor Igor Artamonov said. The drones attacked the Energy (Energia) plant in Yelets, Russian Telegram-channel Astra reported, citing local residents. Videos on social media purported to show blasts and fires following the strikes. The Energy plant, Russia's largest producer of chemical power sources, is under U.S. and EU sanctions. Artamonov said that drone debris fell on a residential building in Yelets, injuring eight people. The Kyiv Independent could not verify the reports. Ukraine regularly launches drone attacks against Russian military and industrial facilities in the rear to undermine Russia's ability to wage its all-out war. In recent weeks, Kyiv has stepped up its drone attacks on Russia, sending hundreds of drones flying toward Moscow. While no direct hits have been reported, the attacks have caused temporary closures of multiple airports. According to Russia's Defense Ministry, Russian air defenses have downed 112 Ukrainian drones overnight on May 23, including 24 over Moscow and one over Lipetsk oblasts. Speaking at the ceremony, Gary Ryan, Managing Director of the title sponsors, said: 'On behalf of everyone at Energia, a massive congratulations to all of the Energia AIL Award winners for 2025. We're already looking ahead with excitement to the Energia AIL 2025/26 season and can't wait to see you back on the pitch.' This year's Energia 'Possibilities' Award was presented to Lansdowne FC. After a challenging start to the season, the club rallied to win the Energia All-Ireland Bateman Cup, a victory that sparked a strong run into the Division 1A semi-finals. Community contributions were also celebrated, with Young Munster's Cathal Quaid receiving the 2025 Community Hero Award. Quaid, who serves as U8s minis coach, assistant secretary, and a key figure in establishing a new U21s pathway, was recognised for his long-standing dedication to the club. The Community Hero Award, nominated by club members and league supporters, honours volunteers who have gone above and beyond in supporting their clubs both on and off the pitch. Reflecting on the awards, IRFU President Declan Madden stated: 'The 2024/25 season was a memorable one at club level, coming, as it did, for the IRFU's 150th anniversary. Club rugby plays a hugely important role in the fabric of rugby in Ireland and on behalf of the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU), I would like to congratulate the winners across all the divisions of the Energia All Ireland League for their efforts over the course of the season.
