Ex-Canada boss Herdman 'admonished' over drone case
Former Canada men's and women's national team coach John Herdman has defended his time at the helm after an independent investigation into his conduct concluded his misconduct warranted "a letter of admonishment".The investigation centred around the illegal use of drones to spy on the opposition, which was uncovered before the 2024 Olympic Games in team coach Bev Priestman, who previously worked as assistant to the England women's team, was among those banned for a year by world governing body Fifa for her part in the scandal. At the time, Canada Soccer described it as "a symptom of a past pattern of an unacceptable culture".An independent inquiry into the matter ended in November but it prompted the launch of disciplinary proceedings for England-born Herdman, who worked for Canada Soccer from 2011 to 2023, initially for the women's team and then, from 2018, on the men's time in charge featured sustained and unprecedented progess on the football stage, culminating in qualification for the 2022 men's World Cup for only the second time in Canada's left to join Major League Soccer side Toronto in August 2023, but resigned in November 2024 in the wake of Canada Soccer launching its disciplinary on Friday, Canada Soccer said: "Mr Herdman was found to have committed misconduct under the Canada Soccer Disciplinary Code. The committee determined the appropriate sanction was a letter of admonishment." The governing body did not offer any details around the investigation's findings, which it said were "final and binding" and that it was "analysing the decision".However, in his own statement, seen by BBC Sport, Herdman defended his actions and behaviour."I acknowledge the Disciplinary Committee's decision, which concluded with an admonishment, without suspension or fine, and brings this matter to a close," he said."I want to express my profound appreciation to the players and staff who stood by me during this process. Your willingness to come forward and defend the culture we built together has been invaluable. We created a team united by respect and shared values, and I am thankful for your support."Throughout my career, I have led with integrity, transparency, and a deep respect for the game. That has not changed. I co-operated throughout the process, including a complete and transparent presentation to the Disciplinary Committee."Although this has been an incredibly challenging period, I remain proud of my time with Canada Soccer and what we achieved together. I look forward to continuing my journey in the game. I remain focused on my passion - coaching, mentoring, and helping teams reach their full potential."Sources close to Herdman believe the outcome represents an exoneration of the 49-year-old, who is now keen to restart his coaching career, having previously attracted interest from his native England, where he has never previously managed.

US-based consortium close to ambitious £18m takeover of Leyton Orient
A US-based consortium is closing in on an £18m majority takeover of Leyton Orient as part of a plan that could lead to an American football franchise being established in east London. The League One club announced last month that they had entered exclusive negotiations with a potential buyer which are believed to be at an advanced stage. The Guardian can reveal the talks involve the proposed purchase of about 70% of Orient by a group of sport, media and tech investors. The buying group is understood to be led by the TV executive David Gandler, who has handled the negotiations with Orient's owner, Nigel Travis. The tech and sports entrepreneur Kit Hawkins and Neil Leibman, an executive at the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball franchise, have had talks about joining the consortium. Gandler is fronting the bid having sold his 17% stake in Paris FC last October as part of a takeover of the Ligue 2 club by the billionaire Bernard Arnault, France's richest person. The American is a former Warner Bros executive and the founder and chief executive of fuboTV, a streaming platform that broadcasts European football in the US, Canada and Spain. The England-born Hawkins is based in Los Angeles. His investments include a stake in the TMRW Golf League co-founded by Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy and a music management company. Leibman has been a member of the Texas Rangers' ownership group since 2010. He remains on the board and chairs the media company that distributes Rangers games and other content. A source with knowledge of the buyers' plans told the Guardian they would ultimately like to attach an American football franchise to Orient that would play in the European League of Football. The 16-team competition will begin its fifth season in May and would welcome the addition of the first British franchise, although it is unclear how far advanced the consortium's multi-sport plans are. A new stadium and training ground for Orient are on the agenda, with the potential new owners viewing Brentford's achievements in building a new ground and establishing themselves in the Premier League as an ideal template. Orient do not own their ground or training ground, leasing Brisbane Road from the former owners Matchroom and Barry Hearn and training at Chigwell Private School. The prospective buyers want to build a multi-sport venue in east London that could also be used by the local community. As part of the proposed deal Travis would retain a significant stake and stay as chair, at least in the short term. Orient have been transformed under the American's ownership since he bought them eight years ago. They reached the FA Cup fourth round this season, losing 2-1 to Manchester City. Travis announced his intention to seek additional investment 12 months ago, having concluded the club required outside funding to achieve his aim of establishing them in the Championship. The Dunkin' Donuts owner has taken his time to identify what he believes are the right partners. Leyton Orient declined to comment.

Sainz feels vindicated by Williams choice after Australia qualifying
MELBOURNE, March 15 (Reuters) - Discarded by Ferrari, Carlos Sainz said he felt vindicated for joining Williams after both he and teammate Alex Albon qualified in the top 10 on Saturday for the Australian Grand Prix. The highly regarded Spaniard, who made way for Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, will start 10th in Sunday's race, four slots behind Albon at Albert Park. Williams finished ninth in the constructors' championship last year but hope to be the best of the mid-field teams after showing improved performance during pre-season testing. Sainz, who won two races with Ferrari last year, chose Williams over last-placed Sauber despite that team becoming the Audi factory outfit in 2026. "Very happy, very proud of the whole team, the way we've managed to progress through the winter and put together a car that is allowing us to be in Q3 for the first time in many years with both cars. I think it's great," the 30-year-old said. "And it can only get better because I have so much more potential to unlock as soon as I understand how to extract lap time in Q3. "I was pretty strong in testing on the weekend, but clearly when it came to Q3, I didn't know where to find the lap time, and I did a few mistakes, and now I need to build that for me." Asked whether Williams' first race weekend of the season had vindicated his decision to join the faded former champions, he said: "Yeah, definitely. "Might be how it's meant to be, and now it's a matter of working hard because I see a lot of potential in this team." Albon wrecked his car in practice at last year's race at Albert Park and ended up driving ex-teammate Logan Sargeant's in qualifying and on race-day because the team brought only one chassis to Melbourne. He finished 11th and missed out on points. "We were fighting for points in previous years but .... this year it feels like we should be able to score points in every race," the England-born Thai said on Saturday. "It will be a dogfight between RB (Racing Bulls), Alpine. I think every weekend is going to be split by a tenth (of a second) and that's it. It's motivating for all of us." Noting rain forecast for Sunday, Albon was bracing for tricky conditions, particularly for the six racers at Albert Park starting a season for the first time. "No-one's driven on the inters (intermediate tyres) or the wets. Good luck to the rookies," he said. "Let's see, anything can happen. I'm hoping for a fairly a safe race but there is going to be carnage for sure."

Hirst could still play a part against Greece
Scotland head coach Steve Clarke says Ipswich striker George Hirst could still play a part in the Nations League play-off with Greece after a delay in formalising his call up stopped him from being named in the initial 26-year-old has played 19 times for the Premier League side this season, mainly as a substitute, scoring three times."It's possible - there was a delay in the paperwork," Clarke said when asked about the England-born striker's involvement. "There's still games to go before we meet up as a squad. There's always the chance of somebody else getting injured."Hopefully not, because I think we've suffered enough of that. George is somebody we've had in mind for a few months. I've watched him recently."He's in and out of the Ipswich team, played the cup games. He obviously scored against Forest. I think I was spotted on the telly at the game."It didn't take a genius to work out who I was there to watch, because he was the only one that qualified for Scotland who was on the pitch. "He's a player that would help to give us more depth to that position if we can do it."
