Nat Sciver-Brunt fires England to series clean sweep over West Indies

Wet weather looked set to deny new England head coach Charlotte Edwards a clean sweep across her first two white-ball series after a near five-hour delay. Advertisement However, staff at Taunton were able to get a 21-over contest under way and West Indies collapsed from 43 for three to 106 for eight before captain Sciver-Brunt's destructive 33-ball innings got England home with ease. A disastrous start for the tourists saw them slip to four for three, with England's opening attack of Kate Cross and Em Arlott proving to be deadly. Cross struck with the second ball of the match as Grimmond feathered behind to Amy Jones and a fantastic delivery from Arlott smashed into Zaida James' middle stump. Stafanie Taylor was then trapped lbw by Arlott and Shemaine Campbelle and Qiana Joseph began the recovery effort for the West Indies, dragging their side to 43 for three until rain stopped play in the 13th over just before 12pm. Advertisement A lengthy delay followed and as the hours passed more overs were lost, but at 4pm it was revealed a 21-over match could be salvaged. When play did resume an hour later, Charlie Dean accounted for West Indies captain Campbelle immediately after a fine stumping by Jones and while Aaliyah Alleyne struck six fours in an entertaining 27, she was one of three wickets for Sarah Glenn. Glenn claimed two scalps during a dramatic final over to restrict the tourists to 106 for eight before Sophia Dunkley signalled her intent, with the second ball of England's chase crunched for four through cover. Dunkley continued to hit boundaries regularly until she was trapped lbw by Karishma Ramharack for 26 to leave the hosts on 40 for one. Advertisement That brought Alice Capsey to the crease but it was captain Sciver-Brunt who upped the ante in cloudy conditions. Sciver-Brunt smashed Ramharack for three fours in a 10th over which went for 16 runs, with the final boundary an inch-perfect sweep. With her fifty within touching distance, Sciver-Brunt crunched another four down the ground before two successive boundaries off Ashmini Munisar brought up her half-century and ensured England got over the line with 61 balls to spare.

Ruthless England demolish West Indies to claim series win

England defeated West Indies by 143 runs in Leicester, securing the ODI series with one match remaining. Amy Jones (129 off 76 balls) and Tammy Beaumont (106) both scored centuries for the second consecutive game, setting a strong foundation for England's victory. England set a target of 367 runs, which proved too challenging for West Indies, especially with the absence of star player Hayley Matthews due to a shoulder injury. Realeanna Grimmond made a half-century on her ODI debut, but West Indies struggled to maintain momentum, losing their final six wickets for 69 runs. Alice Capsey starred with three wickets, and Kate Cross picked up her 100th ODI wicket, contributing to West Indies' collapse and England's dominant win. Jamie Smith inspires as England clean sweep West Indies in ODI series

Jamie Smith's barnstorming 64 off 28 deliveries helped England clean sweep the West Indies 3-0 in Harry Brook's first series as full-time white-ball captain. Smith bludgeoned 10 fours and three sixes for his first fifty in his 13th one-day international as England cantered to a revised target of 246 in 40 overs, with seven wickets and 62 balls to spare at the Kia Oval. The Windies had recovered from 28 for three and 154 for seven to post 251 for nine after arriving to the ground late because of traffic which – combined with a 95-minute rain delay – meant a reduced contest. Adil Rashid took three for 40 while there were two wickets apiece for pace trio Saqib Mahmood, Brydon Carse and Matthew Potts but the Windies' tail wagged through Gudakdesh Motie and Alzarri Joseph. After Sherfane Rutherford's 70 led the first rebuild, Motie (63) and Joseph (41) put on a blistering 91 off 68 balls but that was put in the shade by Smith and Ben Duckett's 93-run union in 43 deliveries. After Smith's blitz, Duckett made 58 off 46 balls before Joe Root, Brook and Jos Buttler got England over the line for their first ODI series whitewash since beating the Netherlands 3-0 in 2022. England's new-look opening pair made ducks as the hosts sealed a Metro Bank series win on Sunday at Sophia Gardens but Smith – averaging 17.63 from his first 12 ODIs – grabbed the bull by the horns on his home ground. He got off the mark with a streaky inside edge but was on top thereafter, taking eight fours from his first 17 balls off the wayward Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales, who was hooked out of the ground for six. Smith was put down at short midwicket from Motie's first delivery and crashed four-six-four-six en route to a 25-ball half-century before the slow left-armer ended an eventful over by finding the base of off-stump. Duckett, who dropped two catches and fumbled a run-out at Cardiff, contributed just 19 to the opening stand but found some rhythm with three sixes off Alzarri Joseph, having been put down on 15. Duckett swept, cut and pulled Motie for three successive fours but then picked out cover off Chase, who then spilled a simple chance at backward point to reprieve Brook when he was on just four. It was largely a procession from that point, even if Root, fresh off a career-best 166 not out at the weekend, perished with 46 needed after top-edging Alzarri Joseph to Shamar Joseph for 44. Buttler then took centre stage, blazing an unbeaten 41 from 20 balls, finishing matters with a towering leg-side six off Seales, as Brook grabbed a red-inker of his own on 26 not out. A combination of broken-down buses, a traffic lights failure and roadworks over a River Thames bridge contributed to the Windies' earlier tardiness from their hotel three-and-a-half miles away. They arrived to the ground at 12:40pm – 10 minutes after the scheduled toss – and a 1:30pm start meant a truncated practice. They stumbled out of the traps after losing the toss as the fit-again Evin Lewis and Brandon King miscued to catchers in the ring. Captain Shai Hope was bounced out by Mahmood for the second time in the series but Rutherford led the recovery well. He was fluent through the off-side and strong off his hips but lacked support as Rashid bowled Cardiff centurion Keacy Carty via an inside edge shortly after the rain break and then had two wickets in two balls by dismissing Justin Greaves and Chase, who recorded a second golden duck in a row. Motie smoked Rashid's hat-trick ball over long-on and then led another Windies wave of resistance alongside Alzarri Joseph after Brook took an excellent diving catch to end Rutherford's defiant knock. While not entirely comfortable with England's short-pitched tactics, Motie dispatched Mahmood and Carse into the stands to go to his ODI best score from number eight, while penultimate batter Alzarri Joseph proved a capable foil as the Windies ended their 40 overs with a flourish.

Joe Root's stunning knock takes England to series win over West Indies

Joe Root starred with a majestic unbeaten 166 as England ended a run of four one-day series defeats in a row by beating West Indies by three wickets at Sophia Gardens. After a ragged display in the field with four dropped catches and two missed run-outs which allowed the Windies to post 308 all out, led by Keacy Carty's 103, England were reeling on 133 for five in reply. But Root thumped two sixes and 21 fours, putting on 143 in 121 balls alongside Will Jacks, who made a vital 49, to lift England into an unassailable 2-0 lead in the Metro Bank series. The Yorkshireman, who leapfrogged Eoin Morgan to become England's all-time leading ODI run-scorer during his 139-ball innings, helped England claim a first ODI series win since September 2023. Brandon King (59) and Shai Hope (78) backed up Carty but England fought back thanks to four for 63 from Adil Rashid and Saqib Mahmood's three for 37 as the Windies lost their last eight wickets for 103. It seemed their total would be enough to set up a decider at the Kia Oval on Tuesday but Root's 18th ODI hundred and his highest score in the format got England over the line with seven balls to spare. His efforts were all the more remarkable after England lost three of their top five for ducks, including both openers as Jamie Smith pushed hard and nicked off and Ben Duckett flashed to deep third. It capped a forgettable day for the usually reliable Duckett, who shelled two catches and botched a run-out, but Root and Harry Brook, the top two ranked Test batters, got the scoreboard moving along. Both batters had moments of fortune as Root survived a close lbw review on umpire's call alone on seven off Matthew Forde while, from the next ball, Brook was spilled on 30 by Hope off Jayden Seales. Root could also have been run-out on nought and 30 but Brook's luck ran out on 47 after top-edging to Seales off Alzarri Joseph, who then hurried Jos Buttler into dragging on to his stumps for a duck. After Jacob Bethell fell lbw to Roston Chase for 17, England were down to their last two frontline batters, but Root accumulated steadily and showed his class with a sumptuous on-drive off Seales. He brought up a wonderful 98-ball hundred with back-to-back boundaries, rocking back into his crease and slamming Gudakesh Motie for six before expertly sweeping the slow left-armer behind square for four. Root continued on his merry way, with Chase targeted relentlessly and Justin Greaves going the distance but Jacks departed with 33 required after being deceived by a Joseph off-cutter and pinned lbw. Root, though, moved past 150 for the first time in ODIs and fittingly hit the winning runs – a straight four off Seales – to give Brook his first series win since becoming full-time white-ball captain. England had won more convincingly at Edgbaston on Thursday but they were off the boil at Cardiff early on after winning the toss. Brydon Carse bowled better than figures of one for 59 suggest as edges off Carty, on one, and King, on 11, were spilled by Duckett at second slip. Carty was also dropped on 41 by Mahmood and could have been run-out twice but was allowed to regain his ground as an off-balance Bethell threw waywardly and later Duckett under-armed to the wrong end. While Carty went to three figures, he walked past a straight one off part-timer Jacks and was stumped, with the Windies failing to recover the momentum. They had been 170 for two after 30 overs but while Hope, dropped on 73 by Root, ploughed a lone furrow, they lost wickets at regular intervals – led by Rashid and Mahmood – as hopes of a 350 total vanished.

Bashir takes 9 wickets and England beats a defiant Zimbabwe by an innings

NOTTINGHAM, England (AP) — Zimbabwe folded inside three days as expected yet made England sweat for its innings win in their one-off test at Trent Bridge on Saturday. In reply to England's 565-6 declared, Zimbabwe was all out for 265 and 255. England won by an innings and 45 runs in a worthy warmup for India's five-test tour starting on June 20. The stark figures don't do justice to a defiant effort by Zimbabwe. Starting its first test matchup with England in 22 years as a severe underdog, Zimbabwe was further handicapped from day one when Richard Ngarava, one of its four seamers, suffered a back spasm after bowling only nine overs and took no further part in the match. England plundered 498-3, its highest ever first-day score in a home test, then declared on the second morning knowing it had to take only 18 wickets without Ngarava batting. After Brian Bennett's brilliant maiden century led Zimbabwe's fightback on Friday, Sean Williams led the charge on Saturday, making England appear out of ideas about how to stop him from reaching his sixth test hundred. It took some luck on video review when Williams was on 88 from 82 balls. He was hit on the knee roll trying to sweep off-spinner Shoaib Bashir and given out. A review showed the ball barely nicking leg stump. Williams left to great applause just before lunch, and Zimbabwe's hopes largely departed with him. Wickets began falling regularly after lunch. Despite a defiant 68-ball 60 from Sikandar Raza, Zimbabwe lost its last six wickets for 109 runs. Bashir took 6-81, his fourth test five-for, and a career-best match haul of 9-143. ___ AP cricket:
