Bilbao set to be overwhelmed by English fans for Europa League final
Uefa and local authorities in Spain are bracing themselves for the arrival of tens of thousands of English fans in Bilbao this month after Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur both reached the Europa League final. Bilbao, which is hosting the final, has a population of 350,000, similar to Leicester, and the Spanish city will struggle to cope if large numbers of ticketless fans decide to travel to the final on May 21. Each club will receive an allocation of 15,000 tickets for the match at the San Mamés Stadium, which has a capacity of 53,000. EasyJet has added extra flights from London Gatwick and Manchester, but prices remain high, exceeding £700 for one-way tickets on certain dates. Alternatives to flying directly to Bilbao include flying to Biarritz, France, and taking a train or bus to Bilbao. This option, involving a connecting flight through Basel, can be significantly cheaper. Other travel options include rail via Paris and Hendaye, a long coach journey with Flixbus, or a ferry from Portsmouth to Bilbao. Driving is also possible, with ferry crossings from Newhaven or Portsmouth, followed by a long drive through France to the Spanish border.
