Sydney has just ranked in the world's top 5 cities for culture on this global Time Out list
Sydney gets a lot of attention for its looks – our stunning harbour, pristine beaches and incredible national parks come to mind. But look beyond the surface beauty, and you'll find that Sydney has a rich arts and culture scene that is increasingly grabbing attention. Now, Sydney has been recognised for being the fifth-best city in the whole world for culture, according to a huge reader survey that forms the basis of Time Out's World's 20 Best Cities for Culture Right Now. Earlier this year, Time Out published its annual list of the world's greatest cities. Some places earned kudos for their food scenes, others got top marks for their world-class public transport and walkable streets. But which were the top of the pops when it comes to art and culture? To find out, Time Out quizzed 18,500 locals in cities across the planet about the culture scene in their hometown. Based on survey responses, each city got a score for both the quality and affordability of its cultural offering, and only the highest-scoring cities for each country made the long list. Time Out's culture experts (our global network of city editors and arts and culture writers) then weighed in, voting for their favourite cultural destinations. It's quite an achievement for Sydney to rank 5th in the whole world, especially considering the other top cities on the list. Paris took the number one spot, with an enormous 96 per cent of Parisians rating their city's culture scene as either 'good' or 'amazing' in the survey. Are we surprised? Non. But this part is perhaps more surprising – Paris received the joint -highest share of votes from the culture-experts panel, tying with none other than Sydney! Bloody oath. Yep, our Emerald City tied with Paris as a favourite among Time Out's panel of experts – and Sydney locals are frothing over our arts and culture scene at the moment, too, with 70 per cent rating this city's culture scene favourably, highlighting events like the Sydney Film Festival, Sydney Mardi Gras and Sydney Fringe, alongside happenings at the and (of course) the Sydney Opera House, plus indie venues like the Enmore Theatre. exhibitions and sparkly mainstage extravaganzas to grassroots artist collectives and drag queens strutting their stuff on bartops, Sydney's diverse tapestry of arts and culture is a huge part of what makes our city so special. 'Sydney's theatre scene is particularly alive right now – there's always a new major musical making its premiere, enticing drama from our leading companies like Sydney Theatre Company (birthplace of current Broadway hit The Picture of Dorian Gray), and indie spaces like the Old Fitz Theatre are busy with incubating the next generation of storytellers.' The other cities that came in ahead of Sydney were Florence, Edinburgh and Mexico City, but Sydney managed to outrank epic cultural hubs like Barcelona, Amsterdam and Vienna. And despite the fact that Melbourne prides itself on its arts and culture scene, our southern neighbours didn't actually make the list. (We love ya though, Melbs!) The following 20 cities did make the list – in each of these cities, culture isn't confined to museums, theatres and legacy art venues; plus it's affordable and accessible, for locals and visitors alike. You'll find pop-up festivals in unlikely locations, late-night museum parties, community gallery crawls, and a new cohort of creatives thinking up the next big thing. (Ever been to a rave in an actual cave? Or a nature-inspired literary festival?) Here are the 20 best cities in the world for culture: Paris Florence Edinburgh Mexico City Sydney Barcelona Chicago Lisbon Hanoi Cape Town Beijing Tbilisi Jakarta Delhi Medellín Amsterdam Marrakech Vienna Prague Abu Dhabi To see the full list and survey results, click here. 🎭

‘You're kind of squabbling': The work-life balance when mum and dad are comedians
They're a busy pair. Raskopoulos – who stars in the Australian version of The Office – has built a huge cult following with his award-winning solo stage work as well as improvised Bear Pack shows with Thank God You're Here regular Carlo Ritchie, which they are performing as part of the Sydney Comedy Festival. Meanwhile, Pascoe is an author, a regular on TV and radio panel shows in the UK, has also starred in and written sitcoms and can be seen in Prime's recently released Last One Laughing UK. How do they juggle it all? 'The diary is the most precious thing in the world, and you're kind of squabbling over time, and whoever gets there first – doesn't matter what the thing pays or how big it is, you know – they have first dibs,' Pascoe says. 'We both have suffered a couple of times with disappointment, but you just have to sort of take a big deep breath and go, 'This is what every single parent in the world is doing'.' Pascoe had no plans for marriage before crossing paths with Raskopoulos. She was on a post-break-up dating hiatus when they met at the Melbourne Comedy Festival in 2015, although they did not get together until he moved to London a few years later. Then came their 2020 wedding and IVF – amid the turbulence of the COVID pandemic – that produced two children. Little wonder Pascoe's show I Am a Strange Gloop, at the Enmore Theatre on Saturday, reflects on her life journey over the past few years. 'When I was having to think of a title for the show, I was thinking a lot about where 'myself' was because I had just been completely destroyed by three years of sleeplessness and other people's bodily fluids,' Pascoe says. It is also riffing on US cognitive scientist Douglas Hofstadter's 2007 book I Am a Strange Loop, which examines the sense of self. Her interest in sex and evolutionary biology formed during high school psychology classes, then fully blossomed when she gave up her day job to try comedy almost 20 years ago and realised she had a lot of time on her hands. 'And I remember thinking, number one, use your time well, and number two, have interesting things to talk about on stage. It's very easy with stand-up to slip into those two-dimensional views of things … researching into evolution and things, I just felt like it kept me interested and interested a lot of my audience as well,' Pascoe says. Loading That interest spawned two books about those subjects: Animal: The Autobiography of a Female Body (2016) and Sex Power Money (2019). Her 2023 novel Weirdo and 2020 sitcom Out of Her Mind, which she wrote and starred in, canvassed similar issues, but she may be a little bit ahead of her audience with the title of her new show – nobody gets the Hofstadter reference. 'Now I'm gonna have to start putting out reading lists before I tour,' she says.

Remember him? Wog Boy actor, 61, hasn't aged a day since starring in the iconic comedy film 25 years ago as he's spotted on a night out
Nick Giannopoulos has proven that he has barely aged a day since The Wog Boy was released 25 years ago. The Australian actor, 61, stepped out for a night out with wrestler Harrison Quintero and was instantly recognisable. Beaming for the camera in the image, posted to Instagram this week, the comedian flashed his youthful visage and cheeky smile. The original Wog Boy was released in 2000 and went on to become the 20th highest grossing Australian film of all time. Wog Boy 2: Kings of Mykonos was released in 2010 and was followed by Wog Boys Forever in 2022. Nick made headlines when he was slammed for telling 'recycled' jokes at the Sydney premiere of Wog Boys Forever at the time. The comedian entertained the crowd for half an hour with some crude jokes prior to the movie screening. In footage uploaded to TikTok, the actor is seen laughing with the crowd during his stand-up comedy act. 'We got any Maltese here? Stand up... Oh, you're already standing,' he quipped. The Greek-Australian actor then joked Italians are too cheap to pay for parking. 'Italians' a**holes are so tight they can't fart, they burp,' he joked. His performance at Enmore Theatre was labelled as 'stale' by some TikTok users. One user bluntly said Giannopoulos was 'recycling 30 year old jokes' while another called the gags 'boring and childish '. Although his stand-up set was not widely praised the same can't be said about his latest movie. Former Home and Away star Sam Frost, who attended the Melbourne premiere, wrote on Instagram it was 'such a fun and hilarious film'. Meanwhile, Nick's Instagram page was flooded with supportive comments following the film's premiere. One fan wrote they 'f**king loved it' while another added it was a 'claaaasic'. Wog Boys Forever is the third instalment of the bawdy Australian comedy series which began in 2000. It co-stars Vince Colosimo, Sarah Roberts and Havana Brown. Nick claimed in 2019 that he trademarked the word 'wog' and 'wogboy' in order to prevent other comedians appropriating it. 'My trademarks are wogs or wogboys... My lawyers have been hired by me to protect my trademark,' he told the Herald Sun at the time. Nick explained that his lawyers have contacted other comedians in Melbourne using the word 'wog' to promote their shows. He added: 'The government ruled in my favour in the mid-90s saying the word "wogs" is associated with my previous shows.' 'They granted me that trademark so that I could protect my business interests.' Nick continued. The Wog Boy star revealed why he trademarked the phrase in an interview with Kyle and Jackie O in 2017. 'I wanted to take that word, that word that had been used against me my whole childhood, and claim ownership of it,' he said. 'The word I hated the most in the world, I now own'.
