ODFW dings ‘record high' of whale entanglements on Oregon Coast
PORTLAND, Ore. () — State regulators have issued a fleet advisory for Oregon's commercial Dungeness crab fisheries, following multiple incidents involving whales entangled in fishing gear. The Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife's Marine Resources Program late last month, effective immediately. It applies to all fisheries off the coast, and is expected to last through crab season — unless it is 'superseded.' Winter weather advisory issued for Wednesday as snow threat continues in Portland metro According to ODFW, the advisory comes after a Jan. 6 incident in which a humpback whale on the Central Oregon Coast was found entangled in 'multiple sets of commercial crab gear.' The department said this is the first humpback entanglement the National Marine Fisheries Service has reported in the state this year, but there was a 'record high' of these incidents throughout 2024. Officials revealed Oregon commercial crab gear led to four entanglements last year. Three of the affected animals were humpback whales, while the fourth was a fin whale. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration notes both species are listed as endangered under the Endangered Species Act. The recent advisory calls on crab fishing vessels to 'remain vigilant' by keeping their gear away from areas where whales are likely to travel. Oceana, a global organization focused on marine conservation, said the advisory is 'woefully insufficient.' 'The number of whales entangled in Oregon crab gear has only increased since fishery managers first implemented risk reduction measures in 2021, which we knew were insufficient even at the time,' Oceana Campaign Director and Senior Scientist Ben Enticknap . 'Oregon fish and wildlife managers must act swiftly and decisively to implement a conservation plan that reduces whale entanglements, not one that maintains the status quo.' Beer brand announces looming closure of Northeast Portland brewery, taproom Enticknap advised ODFW to prohibit conventional crab gear from fishing grounds when there is a high entanglement risk, and to permit whale-safe 'pop-up' gear instead. The scientist also said regulators should be adaptive to the environmental conditions of the coast. Oceana noted that Oregon's record high of whale entanglements was in line with national trends. According to the organization, the preliminary data show there were 34 incidents throughout the West Coast last year — the highest number since 2018. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
