Motorcycle tyre safety: how lack of awareness increases accident risk

Published on: Monday, June 09, 2025 Published on: Mon, Jun 09, 2025 By: Bernama Text Size: Some believe second-hand or bald tyres provide better speed, which is a dangerous misconception. (Envato Elements pic) Kuala Lumpur: The complacent attitude of motorcyclists towards tyre safety, whether in terms of tread condition, air pressure, or wear level, could significantly increase the risk of road accidents. Associate professor Law Teik Hua, head of the road safety research centre at Universiti Putra Malaysia, said public awareness on tyre safety remains low, especially on aspects such as how to assess tyre conditions by reading the tread wear indicator (TWI) or checking expiry dates. Advertisement 'Many only change their tyres when they are completely worn out or when there is a puncture. A common myth is that if the tyre still looks thick, there's no need to change it, without checking the actual age or rubber condition. 'There are also those who believe second-hand or bald tyres provide better speed, which is a very dangerous misconception,' he told Bernama. Law said the typical lifespan of a motorcycle tyre is between three and five years from the date of manufacture. However, for high-usage instances such as delivery riders, tyres may need to be replaced every 1.5 to two years. 'Tyres that are safe for daily use should have treads with good grip, especially in wet conditions, compatible with the road surface. They should have durable construction, and possess the appropriate speed and load index for the motorcycle used,' he said. Advertisement Law said a tread depth of less than 1.6mm indicates that the tyre needs to be replaced, while a tread level that is flush with the TWI mark signifies the tyre is already worn out. 'Small cracks, bulges, or hardening of the tyre are signs of ageing or damage. Air pressure should also be checked weekly, based on the manufacturer's specifications,' he advised. Law further suggested that the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research and road transport department (JPJ) take a more proactive approach by organising tyre safety education campaigns and periodic inspections, as well as mandating the use of tyres that comply with safety standards. Meanwhile, civil servant Mohd Fairuz Shah Rezza Mustafha, 39, believes motorcyclists should take the initiative to understand tyre safety features rather than rely solely on mechanics. 'We are closest to our rides; therefore, tyre safety monitoring should start with us. I prefer to inspect my tyres myself, as it gives me more confidence when riding,' he explained. Fairuz, who rides a Honda RS150R for commuting and convoy activities, said he doesn't mind spending more for high-quality tyres that he feels confident using every day. 'I believe branded tyres offer a high level of safety assurance as a result of extensive research and development, as well as rigorous testing to ensure every detail of the design is truly safe,' he added.

Which engine oil is best for your vehicle?

The right engine oil is crucial for smooth engine performance, reduced friction, enhanced fuel efficiency, and fewer costly repairs. (Envato Elements pic) PETALING JAYA : With so many options of engine oil available in the market – from conventional to semi- and fully synthetic – you can be forgiven for feeling overwhelmed when trying to decide which is best for your vehicle. Each type of engine oil has its advantages and suitability factors for different vehicle types and driving conditions. As such, the right oil is crucial for smooth engine performance, helping to reduce friction, enhance fuel efficiency, and prevent costly repairs. So, what are the differences? Conventional engine oil, which is derived from crude oil, remains the most economical choice for vehicle owners. Commonly used in older car models and standard driving conditions, it provides sufficient lubrication but tends to degrade faster under extreme temperatures. This means drivers may need to change their oil more frequently to maintain optimal engine performance. And despite its affordability, conventional oil may not offer the long-term protection needed for modern engines. For those seeking a middle ground between cost and performance, semi-synthetic engine oil is a good option. This blend of conventional and synthetic oils offers enhanced heat resistance, improved longevity, and better engine protection compared to traditional oil. Ideal for daily commuters and those looking for a cost-effective yet efficient solution, semi-synthetic oil extends engine life while reducing the frequency of oil changes, making it a practical choice for modern driving needs. Engineered specifically for high-performance vehicles, fully synthetic engine oil offers superior lubrication, excellent thermal stability, and resistance to oxidation for the engine. This makes it particularly beneficial for extreme driving conditions, such as high-speed highway travel or stop-and-go city traffic, where engines experience greater stress. Although fully synthetic oil comes at a higher price point, its ability to enhance fuel efficiency, extend engine life, and reduce maintenance costs makes it a worthwhile investment for modern vehicles. Make sure to replenish your engine oil, or have your mechanic do it for you, to prevent wear and prolong the life of your vehicle. (Envato Elements pic) Here are more pointers when it comes to selecting the right engine oil: Viscosity matters Viscosity grades, such as 5W-30 or 10W-40, determine how well the oil flows at different temperatures. Using the correct viscosity recommended by your vehicle manufacturer ensures optimal lubrication, engine protection, and fuel efficiency. Consider driving conditions If you frequently drive in extreme heat, freezing temperatures, or heavy traffic, a high-quality synthetic oil provides better protection against wear and tear, helping to extend your engine's lifespan and improve overall efficiency. Follow manufacturer guidelines Always check your owner's manual for the manufacturer-recommended engine oil specifications. Using the wrong type can lead to reduced performance, increased wear, and even long-term engine damage. Sirim-certified oils When it comes to engine oil, verifying quality and authenticity is crucial to ensuring optimal vehicle performance and longevity. The introduction of the Sirim Genuine Products: Engine Oil for Motor Vehicle Certification provides reliable assurance that the lubricant meets strict performance and safety standards set by industry regulators. This ensures consistent oil performance across diverse driving conditions while protecting consumers from counterfeit and substandard products that could harm their engines. It also guarantees that the oil has undergone rigorous testing and aligns with international automotive standards, offering peace of mind and optimal engine protection for all drivers.

Spain's foreign tourist numbers break record in early 2025

Spain has welcomed a record 17 million foreign tourists in the first three months of 2025. (Envato Elements pic) MADRID : Spain welcomed a record 17 million foreign tourists in the first three months of 2025 as the buoyant sector drives an economy outshining European peers, official data showed on Monday. The 17.1 million foreign tourists arriving in Spain from January to March was a 5.7% increase on the same period in 2024, the National Statistics Institute said. Britain, France and Germany supplied the most holidaymakers to the world's second most-visited country, which last year hosted a record 94 million foreign tourists seeking its sun, beaches and culture. Spending by foreign tourists also climbed 7.2% to 23.5 billion euros, the tourism ministry said in a statement, a welcome development for the government which wants visitors to splash more cash during their stay. The tourist sector was one of the drivers of Spain's standout growth of 3.2% in 2024, well above the EU figure of 1%. But the bonanza has sparked a growing backlash among locals who complain that an unsustainable influx of foreign visitors is driving up rents, saturating infrastructure and changing the fabric of neighbourhoods. Spain aims to 'diversify' destinations, make the sector less dependent on key seasons and 'share out the benefits' across the country, Tourism Minister Jordi Hereu said in a statement.

Non-ergonomic workplaces pose long-term health risks

Without proper ergonomic measures, employees are at risk of developing various long-term health problems such as back and neck pain. (Envato Elements pic) KUALA LUMPUR : Non-ergonomic work environments contribute to stress and health issues – especially those affecting the spine, joints and muscles – among employees. These problems can, in turn, lead to increased sick leave and reduced productivity, ultimately impacting the overall performance of an organisation. According to Ahmad Fakhrul Anuar Ismail, president of the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health, workers at programmes run by the association frequently raise concerns over their long-term wellbeing. 'One of the most common issues is the increase in sick leave due to muscle and joint discomfort, as well as work-related stress, all stemming from a non-ergonomic workplace environment,' he told Bernama. Ergonomics in this context refers to the designing and arranging of workplaces, tools and equipment to fit the needs of those who use them, with the goal of creating a safe, comfortable and efficient work environment. Universiti Teknologi Mara assistant vice-chancellor Amer Shakir Zainol said an ergonomic environment can be achieved by reducing the physical and mental strain workers experience throughout their workday. Amer Shakir Zainol. He said without proper ergonomic adaptation, workers are at risk of developing various long-term health problems, with back and neck pain being the most common. Amer explained that a flexible workspace design plays an important role in preventing workers from spending excessive time at their desks or sitting in static positions, which contributes to back and neck strain. 'Many companies no longer practise the concept of one desk per worker. Instead, employees can choose to work in different areas including cafés, or sit in more comfortable chairs depending on their needs,' he noted. Non-ergonomic environments Ahmad Fakhrul, meanwhile, noted that while workplace environments in Malaysia have yet to reach optimal ergonomic levels, especially among small and medium enterprises, the situation is still manageable. 'Local statistics show trends consistent with other countries, including developed nations, indicating that ergonomic issues are a global challenge, not limited to Malaysia,' he said. Ahmad Fakhrul Anuar Ismail. He added that Malaysia has shown positive progress in ergonomics, particularly through government initiatives. For example, publications such as the Manual Handling Guidelines 2018, Ergonomic Risk Assessment Guidelines 2017, and Seating and Standing at Work Guidelines 2024 have helped industries implement proper ergonomic interventions. The occupational safety and health department is also in the process of upgrading some of these guidelines into codes of practice to improve compliance as well as control over ergonomic issues in the workplace, he said. According to Ahmad Fakhrul, the long-term effects of a non-ergonomic work environment can seriously affect workers' quality of life. In many cases, this not only leads to physical disabilities but also to mental health issues such as depression caused by chronic pain. 'Companies that fail to provide an ergonomic work environment risk facing reduced productivity and higher medical costs. Unhealthy employees will struggle to work efficiently, ultimately impacting overall performance,' he stressed. Adjustable tables, chairs, and screen positions are among fundamental steps organisations can take to reduce physical strain on employees. (Envato Elements pic) Basic steps employers can take include ensuring tables and chairs, as well as the position of computer screens, are adjustable, to reduce physical strain on the body. He said employees should also be trained on proper posture management, safe object-lifting techniques, and other practices that can reduce injury risks. Ahmad Fakhrul further recommends the use of specially designed keyboards and mice to reduce strain on the hands and wrists for those who work with computers or other devices that require repetitive movement. Finally, he encourages workers to take short breaks every so often to relieve strain on their eyes, neck and shoulders.

Social media a mental health resource for 1 in 3 US teens

A higher proportion of girls than boys report negative experiences on social networks, according to a recent US survey. (Envato Elements pic) From Instagram to TikTok to YouTube, social networks are no longer just for posting selfies or dance videos. For more than a third of American teenagers, they've also become the place to find information about mental health, according to a study by the Pew Research Center. According to its findings, 34% of young people aged 13-17 say they 'at least sometimes' get information about mental health on these platforms, and 9% do so 'extremely' or 'fairly' often. Hashtags such as #mentalhealth and #anxiety have racked up billions of views on TikTok. Testimonials, compassionate advice, and pseudo-therapy videos come together in a stream that's as dense as it is disparate. While mental health-related content is ubiquitous, it meets a real demand: 63% of teenagers say social media is an important way for them to obtain such information. And even though more teenage girls than boys get this kind of content on social networks (40% versus 28%), most respondents (64% of girls and 60% of boys) agree it's an important way to obtain this information. Experiences also differ based on ethnic origin: 49% of Black teenagers use social networks to find out about mental health, well ahead of Hispanic (35%) and white (30%) teens. These figures reflect more extensive use of these platforms in communities that face barriers to access to care. At the same time, one in two teenagers (48%) opines that social networks have a mostly negative effect on people their age. And more are recognising that their own mental health is suffering as a result (14% of respondents in 2024, versus 9% in 2022). Another warning sign is that the feeling of having a support system through social networks is falling sharply. In 2022, 67% of teenagers said they felt supported through social media – a figure that dropped to 52% last year, reflecting emotional exhaustion and growing exposure to anxiety-inducing content.
