Equinox Guiding Service Offers AMGA-Certified Training to Address Safety Gaps in Climbing Gyms
Company responds to growing need for standardized staff training in indoor climbing facilities As indoor climbing gyms continue to expand across the U.S., many facilities are facing an overlooked safety concern: a lack of formal certification among staff members responsible for teaching and supervising climbers. Equinox Guiding Service, an AMGA-accredited company based in Maine, is stepping in to raise the standard by offering Climbing Wall Instructor (CWI) training programs for gym staff and instructors across the region. 'Passion for climbing doesn't always equal preparedness to teach it,' says Noah Kleiner, owner of Equinox Guiding Service and an AMGA-certified CWI Provider. 'Without standardized training, many instructors miss key safety protocols or teach inconsistent techniques — especially in high-traffic gym environments.' The AMGA Climbing Wall Instructor certification sets a national standard for indoor climbing instruction, covering belay systems, risk management, client care, and instructional methods. While many gyms rely on internal training systems, Kleiner sees third-party certification as a way to reduce liability, improve instruction, and support professional development. Equinox Guiding Service has been providing professional climbing instruction since 2016 and is known for delivering high-quality training rooted in AMGA standards. The company is currently offering 20-hour CWI courses that can be hosted at participating gyms or scheduled privately for facility teams. 'These trainings build a shared language and culture of safety,' Kleiner says. 'It's about more than a credential — it's about consistency, confidence, and care.' About Equinox Guiding Service Founded in 2016, Equinox Guiding Service is an AMGA-accredited climbing school based in Camden, Maine. Offering private guiding, technical training, and professional certification programs, Equinox specializes in creating accessible, high-quality climbing experiences across the Northeast. Explore Maine, America's top outdoor adventure destination
A vast and alluring region of natural abundance, Maine is home to more than half a million acres of undeveloped land, much of it preserved for recreation and exploration, with the care and support of the Maine Professional Guides Association. On one side, more coastline than California; on the other, New England's highest mountain. In between? As much hiking, fishing, kayaking, skiing, camping and adventuring as you can handle. Beaches and biking There are more than 24 bike trails in the Portland area – across both road and mountain – covering 135 miles, many of them circling near or around the state's best beaches. In Portland, hop the Casco Bay ferry to the islands of Peaks and Bailey for biking and beach strolling or, for those looking for a friendly neighborhood feel and reliably swimmable waters, head to Pine Point in Scarborough. Ferry Beach State Park in Saco has some of the area's best sunsets, and in Phippsburg, the more active beach-goers can hike a few miles through the Bates-Morse Mountain Conservation Area to discover the vast expanse of Sewall beach. Further afield in Acadia National Park, New England's only national park, Sand Beach offers total tranquility and seclusion – so pack a picnic and a book and spend the day there. For biking enthusiasts, Acadia's 45 miles of road surfaces cater to bicycling enthusiasts of all levels. Hiking and climbing Mount Battie in Camden State Park is a moderately challenging 90-minute hike, but once you've made it to the summit you'll be rewarded with a full panoramic view of lakes, hillsides and Penobscot Bay. Rock climbers both new and experienced can book a half- or full-day climb up Barrett's Cove in Camden with Equinox Guiding Service, which will provide all the gear you need and an on-the-ground lesson in knotting and belaying before you go. If you want another challenge Equinox also guides trips up to the stunning Otter Cliff in Acadia National Park. The Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument – 87,500 acres of wilderness on the eastern border of Baxter State Park – offers some of the state's best wooded hikes and plenty of scenic views. At its southeastern corner, the new Tekakapimek Contact Station, part of the traditional homeland of the Penobscot Nation, serves as a visitors' centre, museum and entryway to a network of thousands of hiking paths. Serious hikers will want to challenge themselves by making the journey to the top of Mount Katahdin, Maine's highest peak at about 5,300ft, and the final five miles of the Appalachian Trail. Fishing, rafting, kayaking sailing and more If spending time on the water floats your boat, you've found the perfect place. Maine is a hotspot for aquatic action, and is where you'll find the best kayaking and white-water rafting experiences in New England. In Portland, Rocky Bottom Fisheries leads hands-on lobstering tours or, up the coast, you can explore the outer islands of Boothbay Harbor – and its harbour seals and bald eagles – on an afternoon sail with Boothbay Harbor Schooners. Rockland-based Maine Sport Outfitters leads daily kayaking and paddle-boarding tours around the leafy Camden waterfront, as well as canoeing trips further afield. Maine is also an angler's paradise. Join Baxter's Guide Service on one of its guided fly-fishing adventures throughout the northernmost part of the state, including on Moosehead Lake, Maine's largest lake, famous for its landlocked salmon and brook trout. Weatherby's Lodge, one of the oldest fishing and hunting lodges in the country, offers fly-fishing schools within walking distance of the three-mile-long, salmon-packed Grand Lake Stream. There is excellent ice fishing on Sebago Lake, which in the summer also offers abundant opportunities for hooking salmon, trout and whitefish. Skiing, snowshoeing and stargazing Though summer gets most of the attention, Maine is a four-season outdoor lover's paradise. Saddleback Mountain in Rangeley and the recently expanded Sugarloaf in Carrabassett Valley both offer terrain that is ideal for all levels of skiers, as well as plenty of uphill, glade and cross-country options. Sunday River in Newry is expanding rapidly and has high-speed lifts, while the smaller, more laid-back Black Mountain in Rumford is a favourite with Nordic skiers. One of the biggest draws of winter in Maine is its abundance of designated International Dark Sky Places, including the AMC Maine Woods International Dark Sky Park, where stargazing is exceptional all year round, but particularly so in the crisp winter months. After spending the day snowshoeing around the woods of one of AMC's three Dark Sky Park lodges, all outfitted with telescopes and astronomy education equipment, you can see out the day gazing at the skies around the campfire at night.
