Chargers schedule: Could Los Angeles open up 2025 season against AFC West rival?

It was announced a few months ago that the Chargers would be opening the 2025 regular season across the country in Brazil. We will know who they will be facing for that international game, as well as the rest on Wednesday, May 14. But there may have been a leak of who Los Angeles' opponent will be. According to Front Office Sports' Eric Fisher, the Bolts will be facing the Chiefs in Week 1. Advertisement "The league is closing in on an agreement to have the Google-owned YouTube, distributors of the residential version of NFL Sunday Ticket, carry the Sept. 5 game in Brazil involving the Chargers as the home team. The deal, according to sources, will see the opening-week game from São Paulo include the Chiefs, the NFL's top viewership draw, as the visiting team," Fisher wrote. If Kansas City is the team the Chargers will face in Sao Paulo, this would line up with The Athletic's report last month that indicated the Chiefs were the favorite to be the opponent. From now until Wednesday, there will be a lot of schedule leaks on the internet. Some are accurate, but most of them are just speculations. We will update with any confirmed matchups, if any are released. This article originally appeared on Chargers Wire: Could the Chargers open up the 2025 season against an AFC West rival?

Report: Chiefs will join Chargers in Brazil for Week 1

We've known for a long time that the Chargers will be hosting the Week 1 Friday night game in Brazil. On Tuesday, we'll officially know the opponent. Unofficially, it reportedly will be the Chiefs. Via Eric Fisher of the AFC West rivalry will unfold well south of the border, on September 5. It's an unusual choice, given that it robs the Chargers of home-field advantage for one of their three home games against division foes. The fact there's a good chance Chiefs fans would have outnumbered Chargers fans in a game that would have been played at SoFi Stadium takes away some of the sting. For the Chiefs, it's yet another high-profile, standalone game for a team that has become one of the league's biggest draws. With the game reportedly set to stream globally on YouTube at no charge, it could shatter all prior streaming records. The full schedule will be released on Wednesday, May 14, at 8:00 p.m. ET. Plenty of other games will be leaked and reported before it becomes official.

The sport is begin sanctioned for female athletes in some states at the high school and at lower college levels. 'Flag football is a high priority of ours,' NFL executive vice president Jeff Miller said in response to a FOS question during a conference call Wednesday previewing the annual meeting. 'It's an opportunity for young women to participate in our game . . . and as we look forward, there definitely seems to be an appetite and interest in a professional flag league for both men and women So, it's a continuation of the growth in women's sports, and the role that the NFL can play in it.' Williams is a part-owner of the Dolphins, and Clark has also shown interest in eventual NFL team ownership.

Penn National could pull plug on ESPN Bet in 2026

Penn National has been the RC Cola of the sports betting world. No matter what it does, it can't take market share away from the Coke and Pepsi a/k/a DraftKings and FanDuel of the industry. The massive 10-year, $2 billion deal with ESPN to create ESPN Bet was supposed to change that. It hasn't. Via Eric Fisher of that could result in Penn National pulling the plug seven years early. During a Thursday morning conference call with analysts, Penn National CEO Jay Snowden mentioned the possibility of exercising a three-year exit from the decade-long commitment. 'When we announced our partnership, both sides made it very clear that we expected to compete for a seat at the podium. And we're not on pace right now to do that,' Snowden said, per Fisher. 'We have tremendous plans in place for 2025 and 2026. But if, for whatever reason, we're not hitting the levels that we need to, then obviously as you're approaching the third anniversary, you have a three-year clause in that contract that both sides will have to do what's in their best interests. And so that's always out there.' In the fourth quarter of 2024, Penn National's interactive division, which includes the ESPN Bet online business, lost $109.8 million. Overall the company missed forecasts with $1.67 billion in revenue and $133.8 million in net losses. The company also faces a proxy fight by shareholders to claim three board seats, based on allegations of 'reckless spending.' Among the misadventures was buying Barstool Sports for $551 million before selling it back to founder Dave Portnoy for $1. Despite the money ESPN gets from the partnership, the arrangement freezes the company out of sponsorships with more lucrative brands. Which opens the door for ESPN competitors to do those deals instead. Still, if the 10-year deal is bad for Penn National, it's possibly good for ESPN. The bigger question is whether ESPN could do better with a new partner — and whether ESPN is concerned that its brand will be undermined by association with a company that is struggling.
