Heartbreaking moment Miami Marlins rookie bursts into tears on the field before leaving game early
Miami Marlins rookie Ronny Simon suffered through a rough day at the office against the San Diego Padres on Tuesday evening and broke down in tears. Simon was playing second base for the struggling Marlins when he committed multiple errors - leading to his eventual replacement. The game began with the Marlins scoring six runs in the first inning. Simon plated one of those runs with a single to go up 4-0. He'd eventually make his way around the bases to be the sixth run of the night. But things started to fall apart in the second inning when Simon misplayed a routine single from San Diego's Tyler Wade. The ball went in, then out of Simon's glove as it trickled away from him and toward the stands, allowing a run to score. Simon's throw home to head off any potential further damage was horribly off-line and left no Marlins players available to cover off home plate as Jake Cronenworth dashed home to cut it to 6-3. Simon also mis-handled a third inning hit from Xander Bogaerts, but that was mercifully ruled a single, rather than an error. Then came a disaster in the fourth inning. Wade, the first batter up in the inning, hit a single again at Simon. But the second baseman must have gotten distracted by first baseman Eric Wagaman crossing in front of him because he bobbled the ball once again. In the very next at-bat, Padres star Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a dribbler right at Simon, which the second baseman tried to make a double play on. Instead, Simon flipped the ball over the head of shortstop Javier Sanoja - allowing Wade to dash for third base. The next play, Luis Arraez knocked through a single, scoring Wade from third base to tie the game at 6-6. Simon was seen screaming into his glove in anger. Later, when the Marlins came out to the mound for a pitching change, Simon was seen crying over his unfortunate errors. Eventually, the inning ended and Simon headed straight down the tunnel and to the clubhouse. Simon was replaced by Otto Lopez in the lineup. Simon was seen wiping tears away from his eyes before being taken out of the game Thanks in part to Simon's errors, the Padres pulled off a massive comeback to win the game 8-6. After the game, Marlins starter Max Meyer revealed that he tried to calm Simon down following his errors: 'I just talked to him. I told him, "I know you're not trying to do that behind me. Keep your head up…" It's baseball at the end of the day and I'm not going to hold anything behind him.' Even Tatis felt bad for Simon: 'It's baseball, it happens, [everyone] has those nights... I definitely know he's a great player.' Simon has delighted fans in Miami after spending seven seasons in the minor leagues. After starting his Triple-A season hitting .354 across 15 games, he was called up to the Marlins. Across 19 games in the majors, Simon has eleven hits and five RBI with a batting average of .238.
