Erie residents enjoy frozen winter fun on icy Presque Isle Bay

Lake Erie can be a fun place to spend a summer day, but even when the lake is frozen, there's still plenty to do in Presque Isle Bay. Many people spend their summer days swimming or boating on Lake Erie, but the winter weather draws in a different crowd to the frozen waters. Erie Women's Club welcomes guests for Frozen Tea Party Fast winds and cold weather don't scare many people from enjoying their time on Lake Erie. When the water freezes, hundreds of people gather on the lake for ice fishing, kite sailing and other unique winter activities. 'You poke a hole and you hope. You walk and you drill. My son here has drilled 200 to 300 holes in a day,' said Martin Pavlik, an ice fisherman. Pavlik and his friends caught a few perch on the day, with the prized catch this weekend being a 10-pound steelhead caught through a 5-inch ice hole. Erie Kennel Club Dog Show comes to a close on Erie's bayfront But Pavlik and other anglers are unfazed by the ice conditions, even bringing snowmobiles and ATVs out onto the frozen lake. 'I'd drive my vehicle out here if I could. There's a foot of ice, it'll support it. When you walk on the ice you spud, so you're checking by how hard you hit that ice, how many times it takes to get through. Three or four whacks and you're good to go, you're over 4 inches,' he said. Now a little bit of a different scene here in the Winter on Lake Erie, you got all kinds of stuff going on from ice fishing, there's people bringing ATVs out here, and also ice windsurfing. There's a guy going up over there you could kind of see with the purple parachute over there, something I've never seen before, but also something that's exclusive to the lake here when it's frozen. And even if you aren't fishing or riding, the lake can still be a fun place to spend a day off. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Subscribe Now'It's quiet,' said Collin Murphy. 'Falling,' said Blake Johnson. Q: 'A lot of falling?' 'Yeah, I like pushing him,' said Murphy The children came ice fishing with their parents and have been enjoying their time slipping and sliding on the ice. 'I like that everybody comes out here and it's like a community,' MacKenzie went on to say. Presque Isle Bay named one of the top winter fishing destinations in the country And until the ice melts, the tents will be staying up in Presque Isle Bay. If you are planning on going out on the ice, fishermen recommend having the proper footwear and walking on the snowy parts of the ice. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
