Erie airport highlighting vision awareness with new interactive display

Erie International Airport is teaming up with Erie Retina Research to increase vision awareness for travelers while they wait. An interactive display in the terminal provides an easy way to check for symptoms of serious vision conditions. Better yet, those who suspect an issue can get a free screening and, if needed, treatment. Freedom House celebrates 11 graduates continuing their medical career 'This is the first place where patients from other states and countries get to see erie first. It's also where all our clients come through. All the time through here,' said Dr. David Almeida of Erie Retina Research. After travelers come through security at Erie International Airport, they'll see a step-by-step guide to check for early signs of vision conditions. 'The number one cause of blindness in Erie County and the developed world is age-related macular degeneration. There's nothing that comes close,' Dr. Almeida said. 'X' marks the spot where travelers can cover one eye and look at the grid and the letters for symptoms of vision loss. Erie International Airport set to roll out Real ID this spring The board features contact information for Erie Retina Research, which provides free screenings and treatment. 'We in the past have done things with other organizations that are health related and this was an opportunity to help people that might not know that there are challenges with their eyes that their is an alternative and some solutions that are cost effective,' said Derek Martin, executive director of the Erie International Airport. Dr. Almeida said many people don't seek treatment because they suspect vision loss is normal with age and there's nothing they can do. But he says that's not the case 'How important is early diagnosis? It's everything,' he said. 'We have gene therapy, things like macular degeneration, diabetes, we can cure almost we thought that it wouldn't be possible, things like that, and we have done more gene therapy here in Erie than anywhere else in the United States.' New cutting-edge tech helping Erie eye doctors revolutionize treatment Dr. Almeida recommended that anyone over the age of 55 who has diabetes or is experiencing changes in their vision get a free screening. New cutting-edge tech helping Erie eye doctors revolutionize treatment

An advanced piece of equipment that drastically improves the diagnosis and treatment of eye conditions has made its way to Erie. Erie Retina Research took advantage of a digital microscope that helps perform eye surgeries like never before. Before reading or watching any further, viewer discretionis advised due to the nature of the treatment. It was quite an experience, to say the least. Crowds line up early to celebrate St. Patrick's Day at Erie bars The cutting-edge microscope being utilized is called Beyeonics One. The Beyeonics One microscope comes with an augmented reality headset which was developed from similar technology used by fighter pilots. It allows for ophthalmologists to get an extremely precise look at even the most complex types of eye surgeries all in an entirely digital medium. 'I have a much different way that I can engage the surgical space because it's all digital. I can do things to what I'm seeing that I just can't do with a traditional microscope,' said Dr. David Almeida, a vitreoretinal surgeon & clinician-scientist. Mercyhurst University expanding AIM program for students on the spectrum Erie Retina Research practices clinical research as an alternative care option. It's viewed as an extension of people's health care plans, and with the help of more than 50 pharmaceutical partners, Erie Retina Research is able to minimize the cost of surgery in exchange for the best match for their clinical research trials. That research has helped to open new doors for patients with all kinds of visual challenges including cataracts, glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and beyond. 'You can do lots of different things that are hard to measure, but we know one thing: the longer the surgery, the worse the outcomes. Period. Anesthesia time is bad, but also, you're manipulating the eye in fairly advanced, complicated ways. You don't want to do that for long, so anything that allows you to see things faster and more efficiently usually leads to much better and safer outcomes. It's really about efficiency. You're going in there to traumatize the eye in a purposeful way with surgery, but you still want to minimize that,' Dr. Almeida said. Wells installed to help clean up LORD-Shope superfund site Dr. Almeida said the Beyeonics One helps to see highly magnified images of the eye both on the surface and internally. It's something that can help bring research to new heights and lead cutting-edge efforts right here in Erie. 'We love it because it's where we're from. It's our home. We want to purposefully bring novel technologies and treatments that are going to make our patients better in Erie County,' Dr. Almeida went on to say. Case X at Erie Retina Research is the first office-based surgery location in the state of Pennsylvania and according to Dr. Almeida, it's the only one that does advanced visualization and gene therapy in the country.
