Erie VA celebrates historic military women for Women's History Month
The Erie VA Medical Center celebrated female veterans Friday in recognition of Women's History Month. The midday event featured guest speakers and the distribution of educational materials. It was the first such event at the VA and it aimed to recognize the history of women in the military and pave a supportive future. March marks the return of busy season for Erie bike shop Women are the fastest-growing segment of the veteran population and the VA has expanded its services accordingly. 'So we've increased our staff to provide maternity care coordination, lactation services, helping women stay connected with their annual exams, mammograms, things like that, and over in behavioral health we make sure we have female sensitive care,' said Maggie Westcott, women's mental health champion for the Erie VA. New ladder fire truck rolls out for Erie Fire Dept.
A new fire apparatus is now in service and is taking emergency calls for the community. The new tower two was put in service at 3 p.m. Thursday. It replaces its predecessor which was purchased by the Erie Fire Department in 2003. Erie hospitals seeing longer ER wait times amid respiratory illnesses uptick A lieutenant with the Erie Fire Department said the force has been training on it practically every day since it was brought in and will continue to do so. 'It's got a 100-foot ladder and I think the biggest thing is that it gets us to places where regular, or a ground ladder can't reach. It allows us to get up high, higher than we'd normally be able to, and put water on fires from above, which sometimes is important,' said Thomas Majczyk, a lieutenant in the Erie Fire Department. PennWest unveils new animal art exhibit for visitors
There's a new art exhibit at the Bruce Gallery at Penn West Edinboro and it's meant to get visitors thinking about their perception of animals Penn West alum and sculptor Rachel Maly gave an artist talk and gallery tour on Friday afternoon. Erie VA hosts inaugural Black History Month celebration Her project is on view in the exhibit Understanding Animals, Understanding Ourselves. The exhibit is put together by art history professor Dr. Cindy Persinger and explores representations of animals in art. The exhibit focuses on how animals have been impacted by experiments. 'It's an uncomfortable topic and it's a very important one that I hope I can, I invite people to consider it with the beauty and mystery and strangeness of my work,' Maly said. Erie VA Medical provides several updates at resource fair, town hall
The Erie VA Medical is using an opportunity to engage with veterans during a town hall and resource fair. The center, along with their partners from the county and state, were at the Wesleyville American Legion providing and educating about the services they have available. 'There is no wrong door for the veteran to go into. When they come to us when they come to the county when they come to the state when they come to any of our vet centers, we all know each other, we would collaborate with each other and if we don't have an answer we do a warm hand-off an likewise,' said John Gennaro, medical center director of the Erie VA Medical Center. Recently, the medical center announced that they are expanding their facilities located on the corner of East 38th Street and Old French Road. New name marks new era for LECOM Medical Center and Behavioral Health Pavilion They broke ground on an $18 million project that will provide additional care space in their primary setting. 'The PA National Guard just returned and they have over 300 members serve in Africa and so our team has reached out to the teams there and we're enrolling more and more veterans at the Erie VA,' said Gennaro. One veteran shined a spotlight on their women's program that she said has helped her form a sense of community when she needed one the most. 'I don't work anymore I'm 100% disability so I wanted to give back as well as get out of the house,' said Pamela Bailey, member and volunteer at the Erie VA Medical Center's Women's Health Veterans Program. 'It's just all of us women trying to get together once a month just to get community together.' UPMC Hamot hosts annual Wear Red Expo for women's heart health Erie VA serves over 1,700 female veterans. With that number continuing to grow, their vision is to empower women to obtain optimal health and well-being by providing proactive, personalized health care. Although these veterans might not have served at the same time or been in the same branch, Bailey said when they get together for crafts, the women are all able to relate to each other based on their military experience. 'We can get together and socialize because we all know what it's been like so we have that group community where just the women can get together and be a support system,' said Bailey. Sarah Reed Children's Center awarded new van through Ford Friendship Express Program
The keys to a new 2024 Ford Transit Van were gifted to Sarah A. Reed Children's Center to kick off the Erie Auto Show. Every year, Erie Ford dealers put money together to donate a vehicle to a local non-profit. Cruise on down to the Bayfront for day one of the 2025 Erie Auto Show This is a part of their Ford Friendship Express Program that began in the area a little over a decade ago. Dr. Adrienne Dixon, president & CEO of the center, said this van will help them have a greater impact on the families they serve in the erie community. Erie VA breaks ground on $18.5 million expansion project 'Being able to connect with them in their communities and being able to provide service to them regarding access or even transportation. We are already planning about how this van will have great use, and I'm sure our programs are all going to be vying for the opportunity to utilize it,' said Dixon.
