You can't Uber to the front door of Nashville International Airport anymore: What's changing

Some passengers have complained about having to walk 10 minutes or less to the Ground Transportation Center for rideshare pickup at Nashville International Airport. Now, they'll be dropped off there too— if taking an Uber or Lyft. Starting at 12:01 a.m. on June 3, rideshare drivers will not be allowed to drop passengers off curbside at the BNA terminal entrance. Instead, they will head to the Ground Transportation Center. From there, travelers will follow the sidewalk to the right and cross the street to reach Terminal One. They can take the escalator, elevator or stairs up to the lobby where airline check-in counters and security lines are located. The Ground Transportation Center is on the bottom level of BNA's Garage Two. "Travelers utilizing ride-share services to BNA are encouraged to take this brief walk into consideration when making plans for when their ride-share driver will pick them up and take them to BNA," airport spokesperson Erin Thomas said in a statement. Nashville International Airport said in the May 29 announcement that centralizing rideshare activity will improve efficiency, streamline traffic flow through the main terminal roadway and help rideshare drivers "maximize their earning potential." "These upgrades play a vital role in BNA's broader long-term infrastructure plan, designed to enhance airport accessibility, efficiency and overall traveler experience," a statement from the airport said. This adjustment comes amid the airport's multi-billion-dollar expansion that has been ongoing for the last eight years. The total renovation costs since 2017 amount to $4.49 billion, including the ongoing Concourse D extension, another parking garage and road improvements. Friends and family dropping travelers off at the airport will continue to be allowed curbside drop-off at Terminal One, and the airport says to expect less curbside congestion once the change takes effect. The Ground Transportation Center drop-off zone is only for rideshare drivers and riders. The Nashville International Airport asserts that rideshare drivers will be able to maximize earnings under the new rule. Instead of dropping off a rider, circling out of the airport and then back in to the Ground Transportation Center for a pick-up, drivers can simply stay in one place. Airport officials expect that this will decrease the wait time for rideshare pick-up from BNA. Hadley Hitson covers business news for The Tennessean. A Thanksgiving Day wish keeps giving after Erin's passing

National Donate Life Month Katie Ammon of Francestown (at right) shows a picture of her late sister, Erin Thomas, while speaking during an event to honor organ donor recipients and families at the State House in Concord on April 7, 2025. Kate Ammon of Francestown will never forget the holiday table on Thanksgiving Day 2017 when her 'baby' sister, Erin Thomas of South Carolina, shared her greatest joy was becoming an organ donor. Less than three months later, Thomas, 42, sustained a fall down a flight of stairs in Boston after coming north to celebrate her favorite team, the New England Patriots, playing in the Super Bowl. The traumatic brain injury she suffered led to Thomas's death three days later. Thomas's family got to fulfill her greatest wish — and then some. One part of her liver was donated to a seriously ill adult living in Vermont. The other half saved a 1-year-old Cape Cod boy who had spent nearly his entire life in the hospital. 'It makes me feel good to know she has helped others and that is exactly what she wanted,' Ammon said of her sister, who she called a 'sunshine soul.' Over seven years, the family has received letters and emails with thanks from many who live on thanks to donations from Thomas. Flanked by leaders in the donation movement, Gov. Kelly Ayotte signed a proclamation Monday declaring April to be Donate Life Month in New Hampshire as similar events took place all over the country. Ayotte flashed her own driver's license with the heart logo confirming she was an organ donor. 'You can do that right as you apply for a license. It is a very good thing to give back,' Ayotte said at the ceremony in the Executive Council chambers. Alex Glazier, president and CEO of New England Donor Services (NEDS), said the number of annual donors in the region has grown by 80% since 2020, but they remain rare. 'Only about 3% of deaths have a medical opportunity for donation,' Glazier said. In 2024, donations from 648 people in New England who died resulted in 1,570 life-saving transplants, said Matt Boger, director of government relations with NEDS. State motor vehicle offices are where 95% of organ donation statements get signed. 'Making magic' N.H. DMV Director John Morasco credited his staff with 'making magic' with 54% of license holders here electing to be donors, above the national average. Two changes have made the program more lasting and fulfilling, Morasco said. National Donate Life Month Gov. Kelly Ayotte holds up her driver's license to show the heart symbol which indicates her consent to be an organ donor during an event to honor donor recipients and families at the State House in Concord on April 7, 2025. A motorist used to decide on donation every five years when they renewed a license. If they forgot, they came off the list. Now, anyone who signs up as a donor remains one for life unless they exercise the right, at any time, to ask that they come off it. Another legal change now allows those left behind to see the signature on the donor card of the loved one who donated. 'This is something tangible they can see at their time of greatest need and can really provide comfort,' Morasco said. Ammon said her father, 87, and mother, 80, appreciate her advocacy, especially since Thomas wasn't their first child to die who then became a donor. In 1967, Ammon 1½ when her older brother, Andrew, 4, died after open heart surgery for a defect that had not previously been found. Researchers used Andrew's donated heart to save others like him in the future. 'My parents got a letter about a year later that thanks to the donation they were able to do successful heart surgery on another baby,' Ammon added. 'They live on, and in that way it really helps those of us they leave behind to grieve.' To learn more about organ donation, open to all regardless of age or health, visit the NEDS website or follow the program on LinkedIn or on X. klandrigan@

Colchester Young Farmers deliver record-breaking compost fundraiser for charity

Colchester Young Farmers have delivered a record-breaking compost fundraiser for a cancer foundation. The group have successfully delivering 67 bulk bags and 76 small bags of compost across Colchester and surrounding villages on Saturday, February 22. The annual initiative raised an impressive £2,600 for The Tom Bowdidge Youth Cancer Foundation, which supports teenagers and young adults suffering from cancer, as well as their families. A spokesman for Colchester Young Farmers said: "2025 has been a record year, raising more than £2,600. The group delivered dozens of compost across Colchester (Image: Erin Thomas) "We must thank everybody who ordered and donated, the money raised will allow so many young people live their life to the full. "Special thanks to MKM Colchester, Birch Airfield Composting Services and G & J Barron for their donations and support to the event, as well as all other Colchester YFC supporters and members for making the event a success." The event takes a lot of planning and organisation, with orders being taken one to two months before the day. Specific routes are planned to ensure efficient delivery. The members of the club spend the weekend before deliveries "bagging up" the compost, getting their hands dirty. The event took a lot of planning and organisation (Image: Erin Thomas) On the day of deliveries, there were four trucks/trailers with at least four members with each, covering particular areas around Colchester and following their specific routes for speedy delivery. Delivery locations ranged from Mersea Island, to Nayland, so prior planning was essential. The spokesman added: "We cannot wait to do it all again next year, and hopefully beat the record. "Keep an eye out for the poster in the new year. "If you are aged 16-28 and have an interest in the outdoors, want to make friends, have fun and help raise money for charity, please get in touch via our Facebook or Instagram pages. "Remember, you don't have to be a farmer, to be a Young Farmer."
