Maldon mud race runners slip and slide their way around world famous course

Hundreds of competitors from across the world have been taking part in a famous charity mud race that dates back more than half a century. Held in Promenade Park in Essex, the Maldon Mud race attracted 350 fund-raising entrants, all willing to brave the slightly cooler temperatures and cake themselves top-to-toe in mud! A number of charities benefit from the day, including the Essex and Herts Air Ambulance, the Fairleigh Hospice in Chelmsford, and Essex Wildlife Trust. Organisers say in 2024 they distributed over £35,000 to various charities, and they were hoping to beat that target this year after the event sold out to competitors in January. 'We have some regulars who want to beat last year's times, but most are fun runners," said race chairman Brian Farrington. "People think it is really easy because it is only 440 metres and the winner will do it in under four minutes, but the loser will do it in 45 minutes because they will crawl round, literally crawl round. 'Last year we saw nearly 20,000 people attend the event, so we are hoping to raise even more money for the charities," he added. The event started in 1973 as a dare from an Essex resident to the landlord of a local pub, challenging him to serve a meal on the saltings of the River Blackwater dressed in a dinner jacket.

Law firm raises more than £44,000 for charity

A law firm has raised more than £44,000 for charity. Ellisons Solicitors, which has offices in Bury St Edmunds, Colchester, Chelmsford, Ipswich, and Frinton-on-Sea, raised the money throughout 2024 as part of its 260th anniversary celebrations. The money will be donated to several charities, with a particular focus on The Brain Tumour Charity and Essex Wildlife Trust. Guy Longhurst, managing partner at Ellisons Solicitors, said: "Our 260th anniversary has been about reflecting on our history, celebrating our achievements, and most importantly, giving back to the communities we are proud to be part of. "The response from our colleagues and local communities has been incredible, and it has been inspiring to see the effort and creativity everyone has put into fundraising. "Supporting causes like Essex Wildlife Trust and The Brain Tumour Charity has always been a part of our ethos, and we are proud to contribute to their amazing work." The firm also made many smaller donations to charities at Christmas, including £500 to Bury St Edmunds-based My WiSH Charity.

'Fairytale' snap sees photographer, 14, win contest

A teenage photographer says she hopes "to inspire others" after her arresting image of woodland deer scooped a wildlife competition. Leah Bloom's photograph, entitled Peekaboo, captured two fallow deer in the "fairytale" setting near Copped Hall in Epping Forest. The 14-year-old has been named the overall winner of Essex Wildlife Trust's Photography Competition 2024, fending off nearly a thousand other entrants. "I started wildlife photography less than two years ago, and doing so has brought me so much closer to all the wonderful wildlife in Essex," she said. She added: "All my life I have loved wildlife and nature, spending much of my free time walking in Epping Forest – which is helpfully on our doorstep." Leah's photograph was submitted to the Young Blood category and has become he very first from the under-16s group to win the contest, which has been running since 2017. The annual competition, which celebrates the wild places and wildlife that can be found throughout the county, runs from September to the end of November. Photographs need to have been taken in Essex within the last year to be considered, before a panel of judges choose the winners in six different categories in December. Members of the public are then asked to crown the overall winner of the competition through an online voting system – and Leah's entry was successful. "I love being able to showcase the characteristics, behaviours, and unique personalities of all the animals I photograph," Leah said. "With my photography, I hope to inspire others to go out into nature and care about the animals and insects we are lucky to share our planet with, as well as their habitats, too." Leah's prize-winning photograph is currently being displayed alongside the five other category winners at High Chelmer Shopping Centre, in Chelmsford.
