UK intelligence reports Russia may suffer record losses in war against Ukraine in 2025
UK Defence Intelligence has noted a tendency for the number of Russian losses in the war against Ukraine to continue to grow in 2025. Source: UK Defence Intelligence update on X (Twitter), as reported by European Pravda Details: UK intelligence has estimated Russia's total losses at around 950,000 dead and wounded since the start of its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, Russia has lost approximately 160,000 people in the first four months of 2025, based on estimates in the UK intelligence review. "Should these casualty rates persist for the rest of 2025, this would be the costliest year of the war in terms of Russian personnel, continuing the year-on-year trend of casualty increases," the update says. The report also notes that Russian losses in April 2025 remain, on average, lower than the "very high daily rates" of late 2024 but "still towards the high end in the overall context of the conflict". "So far in 2025, Russia has not been able to translate continued heavy losses into significant advances in Ukraine," the update concluded. Background: Earlier, UK intelligence also described how Russia is recruiting foreigners to join its armed forces to participate in the war it has waged against Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Estonian Defence Forces Intelligence Centre believes that Russia is continuing its war of attrition, depleting Ukraine's military resources, with no signs of preparations for a potential truce. Ukraine conducts successful counterattacks on Pokrovsk front, Estonian Intelligence says
Estonian Defence Forces Intelligence Centre has reported successful Ukrainian counterattacks on the Pokrovsk front, while Russian troops have made some progress in Russia's Kursk Oblast, where Ukrainian forces are conducting an operation. Source: Estonian public broadcaster ERR, citing Ants Kiviselg, Head of Estonian Defence Forces Intelligence Centre, as reported by European Pravda Details: Kiviselg noted that Russian troops still hold the initiative, with the number of daily attacks remaining consistent with last week, averaging 109 attacks per day. Quote: "However, the Russian Federation has not managed to occupy as much of the Ukrainian territory as in December and January. The pace of advance has slowed down. Nevertheless, [Russian forces] are, unfortunately, still making gains at a tactical level," he said. Commenting on the situation in Kursk Oblast, Kiviselg noted that North Korean troops are again actively involved in hostilities. "Although Ukraine is conducting active defensive and offensive operations in Kursk Oblast and still holds 350-380 sq km, the Russian Federation has managed to recapture some territories, approximately 20-40 sq km, over the past week," he added. Kiviselg also highlighted that Russian troops have become more active in Ukraine's Sumy Oblast, likely aiming to weaken the Ukrainian forces in Kursk Oblast. He explained that Russia has intensified its efforts to advance towards the town of Chasiv Yar in Donetsk Oblast, attempting to break through Ukrainian defence lines. "Some tactical success has been achieved [by Russian forces], though in general, Ukrainian defensive lines are holding," Kiviselg said. In addition, Ukrainian troops carried out successful counterattacks near the city of Pokrovsk, stabilising the front line and liberating several villages in the area. Background: Earlier, UK Defence Intelligence reported that Russian forces in Ukraine have suffered 90,000 casualties killed and wounded since the beginning of 2025. UK intelligence also assessed the state of the Russian Armed Forces as of the third year of the full-scale war against Ukraine, detailing Moscow's losses. Support Ukrainska Pravda on Patreon!

Russia pays for every square kilometre captured in Ukraine with 100 soldiers, Estonian intelligence reports
The Estonian Defence Forces Intelligence Centre has assessed that in January 2025, capturing one square kilometre of Ukrainian territory cost Russia the lives of 100 soldiers from its armed forces. Source: European Pravda, citing ERR, an Estonian media outlet and Janek Kesselmann, Deputy Chief of the Estonian Defence Forces Intelligence Centre Details: Estonian intelligence indicates that recent geopolitical events have not affected the course of hostilities in Ukraine. "The fighting continues on both the Russian and Ukrainian sides," Kesselmann said. The most intense battles occurred in Russia's Kursk Oblast, where Ukrainian forces launched an offensive from the city of Sudzha in a southeastern direction. Meanwhile, the situation on the Pokrovsk front, which remains the primary axis for Russia's offensive operations, has not changed significantly. If Russian forces manage to capture Pokrovsk, their next targets will likely be the the cities of Sloviansk and Kramatorsk, but at the current pace, this will not happen quickly, Estonian intelligence notes. Kesselmann estimates that at this tempo occupation of the entire territory of Ukraine could be possible by 2075. Estonian intelligence has assessed that compared to late 2024, Russian forces captured approximately 100 square kilometres less territory in January 2025, while suffering an average of 100 casualties per square kilometre (killed and wounded). Russia's relatively high casualty rate – between 1,000 and 1,500 killed or wounded daily – has forced its military to send wounded soldiers back into battle, the report notes. Quote from Estonian intelligence: "The effectiveness of such 'assault units' is highly questionable. However, they serve to exhaust Ukrainian forces (mainly by depleting their ammunition supplies) and allow Russia to avoid dealing with war-disabled soldiers and paying long-term benefits." More details: Kesselmann added that Ukraine is holding its ground well on all fronts. "Of course, the situation is extremely difficult and the losses are significant, but Russia's losses are clearly greater than Ukraine's," he said. Background: Earlier, Estonian intelligence reported that Russia does not currently pose a direct military threat to Estonia. It was also noted that China is helping Russia circumvent sanctions and supplying drone components. Support UP or become our patron!
