Nationals face growing pressure as MLB insiders split over future stars or fast fixes with top draft pick: Report
Nationals face growing pressure as MLB insiders split over future stars or fast fixes with top draft pick: Report (Image Source: Getty Images) The Washington Nationals won the 2025 MLB Draft Lottery. They will now pick first in July. But this year, there is no clear star at the top. It will not be an easy choice. MLB expert Jim Callis thinks it's a race between three names. Each player is talented, but also has question marks. The Nationals will need to choose carefully. Let's look at the three top options being considered for the No. 1 pick. SS Ethan Holliday has a big bat and a big name Ethan Holliday is a well-known name. His brother, Jackson Holliday, is already in the MLB. Ethan Holliday has strong power and a smooth left-handed swing. Scouts like his size and hitting ability. But there are concerns, too. His plate discipline is not strong. He swings at pitches outside the zone. Also, his bat-to-ball skills still need work. On defence, he may not stay at shortstop. He is not as athletic as his brother. Still, his bat is powerful, and he has room for development. Future big-time hitter he might become if he keeps growing. Left-handed LSU pitcher Kade Anderson. He had a strong year and gained attention fast. His numbers are very good. In 15 starts, he had a 3.54 ERA. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch vàng CFDs với sàn môi giới tin cậy IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo He also struck out 145 batters in 89 innings, with just 24 walks. Kade Anderson's fastball is in the low to mid-90s. It has a rising effect that makes it hard to hit. He also throws a nasty curveball. He may not have top speed, but he controls the game well. Scouts compare him to MacKenzie Gore. The Nationals may see him as a safe and smart pick. He is an 18-year-old right-handed pitcher. He is 6 feet 4 inches tall and throws very hard. His fastball hits the high 90s and even reaches 100 mph. But teams often avoid high school pitchers early. They carry more risk. Seth Hernandez still needs to build strength. He also needs to improve control. But his raw talent is rare. Some scouts think he has the highest upside in the draft. The Nationals must choose between power (Holliday), polish (Kade Anderson), and potential (Seth Hernandez). All three players are exciting. But none is a sure thing. Washington's choice in July will shape its future. The clock is ticking.

2025 MLB Draft: A closer look at the top 20 high school prospects entering the spring
There is no question who the top-rated high school baseball player in the class of 2025 is. Ethan Holliday, like his older brother Jackson, who is now playing with the Baltimore Orioles, has a solid chance of being the top overall pick in this summer's MLB Draft. In fact, along with a couple of college players, Ethan Holliday's name is nearly always mentioned among the top Angels when they kickoff that draft with the top pick. After Holliday, though, things get murky at the high school level fast. It's not that there is a lack of talent – most experts agree that this draft contains a lot more potential superstars out of the high school crop than last year. Those players are just hard to separate. Luckily, we have to do that for us. It recently came out with its 2025 MLB Draft prospects list – Ethan Holliday is listed No. 1. Here's a look at some of the top high school players on that list. With father Matt finishing a Hall of Fame consideration worthy career in 2018 and brother Jackson currently in the pros, Ethan has the pedigree. More importantly, he has a super-smooth left-handed swing. He drives the ball well and is considered to have 30 plus home-run potential. He's fundamentally strong at shortstop, but could end up at third base or in the outfield as a pro. Stillwater (Ok.) 3B Ethan Holliday hit two homers today in a preseason scrimmage v. Ponca City. He also touts a heavy change-up that is advanced for his age. He's likely to be the first pitcher taken. Seth Hernandez (25 CA) ended the day after 3-scoreless innings. Struck out 7 opposing batters and got 7 whiffs in the short outing. Here is an extended look. #PGHS #SoCalShowdownPG #Vandy commit @PGAllAmerican — Perfect Game Scout (@PG_Scouting) February 23, 2025 Some scouts rate Cunningham as the best pure hitter in the draft, despite his small size. He makes consistent contact from the left side of the plate and rarely strikes out. He might not develop more than gap power, but he's also a good runner who should stick in the middle infield. Kayson Cunningham (@KaysonCunningha) lays out, snags the line drive and throws to 2nd from his backside for the inning ending double play. #FiveToolDefense #FiveToolTopPlay @CTJbaseball (TX) 2025 • @TexasBaseball signeeProfile: — Five Tool South Texas (@FiveToolSTX) February 25, 2025 Neyens is a hefty 6-foo-4 with raw power from the left side of the plate. A recent trend has been for MLB teams to select good two-way players and then give them some time in the minors to make an impact one way of the other – ala Bryce Eldridge. Schoolcraft could fit this mold as a power left-handed pitcher and power-hitting first baseman. Betting odds have him ending up as a hitter – but it's close.
